I say YES! Bohn has done ALOT for CU sports besides being a member of the Pac-10.

Its tough to rip Bohn right now. Still done a bad job hiring coaches.. But the program is better in the Pac 10 than it was in the Big 12.

No - this was a BIG win for him, in the face of a number of failures. He has to get it done of the field and on the court now.

Apparently Bohn hired Dick Tharp to negotiate directly with Pac 10 with respect to CU's admission. This way, Bohn could say that CU has not had any contacts (but an ex-CU AD has!) If true, a very smart move. Tharp was a bad AD, but he's a good lawyer and a smart negotiator. A shrewd move by Mr. Bohn.

    He's trending up these days.

CU to the Pac 10... plus, the Boyle hire is looking really good right now.

No thanks. Bohn's record is horrible. Everywhere he's been he left the AD's in shambles.

New AD, and new football coach as part of our trip to the Pac 16. Need I mention, we're not getting it done on the field either?

don't extend him now, but he's earned the right to hope either a. Hawk wins 8 games or b. make a good hire and THEN be considered for an extend.

like the Boyle hire....but, i'd like to see him conduct a *national search* one of these days instead of just driving up and down I-25.

Hawk sort of counts, but we were the only BCS league team hiring that year, IIRC.

No. You don't extend the first time good things happen. That's what got us in trouble with Hawkins.

This is definitely positive, but you don't rush to lock people into long term deals because if they do well, they might leave. But if they suck, you're stuck with them.

Not sure what is left on Bohn's contract but I think we need to wait and see. Like already said above, let's see how the next football coach hire goes.

:stupid: Exactly, extend after a history of success. Things look up for Bohn in the short term, let's see if he can keep the momentum for a while first.

Two things - one, how much time is left on his contract? Two, who is our next football coach? If he has one year left on the contract, I'd say go ahead and give him a three year extension now. If it's more than that, I'd wait.

I don't care who you are, you have got to be impressed with the way he has handled this stuff with the Pac. Absolutely spot-on brilliant. Not just a home run, but a grand slam. He pushed all the right buttons and said all the right things to the right people while managing to avoid saying the wrong things to the wrong people. Meanwhile, those goofs in Texas have been tripping over their dicks for the last three weeks.

I'm with sacky on this one. I don't think CU/Bohn could have handled this much better than it was. The Denver media on the other hand...

    This ^^^^^

Bohn has done well here. Congrats are in order. But remember, the rush to extend is what stuck us with Hawk. Let things play out over the next few years. Bohn was recently extended through 2012. CU should review in mid 2011.

I think this APR thing says a lot about Bohn, how could a well managed Athletic Dept have let that happen? Add to that the fact that the none of the 3 biggest programs (Football, Mens bball and Womens bball) have had a winning conference record in four years, and there is no question in my mind he shouldn't be extended. About the only thing he has proven to be good at is mobilizing donors.

While the P10 thing is a coup, given the state of the programs and the APR embarrassment, I have to believe the P10 wanted CU no matter what.

Not sure if you can blame Bohn for the APR. We recruited some some kids that made bad decisions off the field and didn't do well in the classroom, and subsequently are no longer @ CU. That is on Hawk as much as anything. The P10 may have wanted CU no matter what, but Bohn got the deal done and didn't leave us at the kids table (mtn west). Mobilizing donors is a big thing, we clearly need to win more games, but today isn't a day to bag on Bohn. He got the job done, there is something to be said about that.

I'm leaning towards the wait and see approach. If talkins has another bad year, then I say fire both of them. Bye the way, did everyone get the official e-mail announcement today from the AD? When I first saw it I thought they were going to start asking for more $$$.

[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG] On Friday, June 11 at 11 a.m. MDT, the University of Colorado will hold a press conference to formally announce that CU will accept an invitation to join the Pac-10 Conference.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — The Pacific-10 Conference announced Thursday that the University of Colorado at Boulder has accepted an invitation to join the Conference as its 11th member, the league’s first new member since July 1, 1978.

“This is an historic moment for the Conference, as the Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth,” said Commissioner Larry Scott. “The University of Colorado is a great fit for the Conference both academically and athletically and we are incredibly excited to welcome Colorado to the Pac-10.”

“On behalf of The University of Colorado students, faculty, alumni and fans, we are proud to accept this invitation from the Pac-10 and join the most prestigious academic and athletic conference in the nation, “said Philip P. DiStefano, chancellor of CU-Boulder.

“The University of Colorado is a perfect match — academically and athletically — with the Pac-10,” said University of Colorado President Bruce D. Benson, “our achievements and aspirations match those of the universities in the conference and we look forward to a productive relationship.”

Scott, DiStefano, Benson, CU Board of Regents Chairman Steve Bosley and CU Athletics Director Mike Bohn and others will hold the official press conference on Friday, June 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. MDT on the club level at Folsom Field in Boulder.

Let's not jump the gun in our excitement today.

As many of you know, I'm a big Mike Bohn supporter. I come from a business and marketing background, so maybe I have always over-appreciated certain things about his job performance that other wouldn't weigh as heavily. Today's announcement is an example of one of those things.

I also disagree with the earlier post about Bohn leaving his previous departments in shambles. Idaho is definitely much stronger today based on Bohn's blueprint and SDSU is also in better shape (look at baseball and the basketball programs... football didn't improve but I have trouble faulting him for hiring Chuck Long at the time). But at best Bohn's coaching hires have been uneven and there have been a lot of losing records that you can hang on him.

Here's what I would say at this point:

Mike Bohn has earned some breathing room. If Hawkins delivers a big season in 2010 and follows it with a great recruiting class (or we are able to land an A-List replacement in the event of a mediocre or losing 2010 season)... and if Boyle delivers a post-season tournament, especially the NCAA... and we see some other things happen like Lappe delivering a winning season, Kritza getting us close to .500 (or better) in volleyball in year 2, and other sports continuing their excellence (XC, Ski) while others continue to improve and make noise (Soccer, T&F, Tennis, Golf)... and we avoid any NCAA violations... and we operate with positive cash flow... and we are able to pull off some facility upgrades like new Folsom and Coors scoreboards... and reveal a plan for Balch...

Then I am ready to give Mike Bohn a significant raise and contract extension. Until then, not so much. There's a lot of work to do.

We still have to see how the Pac-10 negotiations go. Division alignment, who our "rival" will be. Revenue sharing plans. The Pac Network. Football facility upgrades, adding Baseball and Softball? Wrestiling? Gymnastics? Bringing in the West Coast alumni donations en masse.

The move to the Pac-10 has been made, and that is great because it is a tremendous opportunity, but Bohn and Co. still need to capitalize on it, and that is what we need him to do.

I like Bohn and think he has done a good job, but now is not the time to pat ourselves on the back, there is too much still to be done. If he can accomplish those things, then he deserves a very healthy extension.

No way no how do you extend this guy. Yes we got into the Pac, not really a tough thing to accomplish in my opinion. On the athletics side, he has not hired one winning coach. Not one. Buz was going to win but he is not hear. Let's see what Boyle and Lappy do and how he handles the Hawk situation this year. He has been good on some fronts but he has way too much to prove to me at this point.

This post cannot get lost in all the mumbo jumbo about conference alignments, the direction of the AD, etc. This was the post of the year.
