Tell me honestly, have you EVER seen refs call a team for delay of game on a last second field goal before? How many times have you seen these last second fire drill field goals take place... 30, maybe 50 times in your life? And out of those times, how many of those came down to whether or not the refs signaled the ball to be ready for play? Before yesterday, I'll guarantee you the answer to that question is "zero".

Every time this has happened before the only thing that's mattered is whether or not the kicking team gets their players set and gets the ball snapped before the clock hits triple 0's. Yesterday though, for whatever reason, the refs decided to make an unprecedented call following an incredible display of execution by the Buffs special teams unit.

It's like when you see a player in the NBA get called for traveling after taking 2 steps leading up to a dunk. Even if you want to argue that the call was technically right, you're more or less required to admit "yeah... but you NEVER see refs make that call."

I concede nothing here though, as far as I'm concerned the officials absolutely made two consecutive horrendous calls during the most critical juncture of yesterday's game. They WILL be investigated, but they should be suspended.

I'm not bitter though... not at all.

Just watching tonight's Colts/Chargers game, right before the half Reggie Wayne was tackled inbounds, short of the first down, on a 3rd down with 17 seconds left in the half. The ref picked up the ball, placed it in the center of the field, and was out of the way with 13 seconds remaining (the players then built their formation around the ball).

That's FOUR seconds to get the ball ready for play in a stressed situation, the marvelous crew in Ames took OVER FIFTEEN SECONDS.

*note: If you watch the colts/chargers sequence again, you'll notice that a whistle was blown at the end of the 3rd down play, but no whistle was blown to signal that the ball which had been placed was officially ready to be snapped. No flags were thrown on Indianapolis for not waiting until the ref signaled the ball ready for play before attempting their kick.

It appears in this situation referees typically just get the ball in place, get the hell out of the way, and let the fire drill kick take place without their interference. Just further proof that the Buffs got absolutely jobbed.

It is clear to me that the officials in Ames were going to let the clock run out before ever signalling the ball in play. The Buffs were fu**ed no matter what. It was just horrible officiating. In that situation any officiating crew worth it's salt would be bustin their asses to get the ball set up and in play. They clearly had no intention of doing that.

as terrible as the ofifciating was, I still cant feel too bitter about it. Im more willing to place the blame on us giving up 31 unanswered points. The game never should have came down to that display of douchebaggery.

See, I've always had a hard time with that kind of rationale. Both of the teams played one crappy half, and both played one really good half, so why is one team supposed to feel bad that they "gave the game away" while the other is supposed to feel good that they "fought back and earned the win"?

As I see it, they both scored 31 points. The only difference in the box score is that one team got screwed over by overwhelming officiating incompetence, while the other one didn't.

While it is disappointing to give up such a big lead, your rationale completely ignores the fact that our kids had the heart to pull back together and put themselves in a position to move the game into overtime.

You should know how hard that is to do...so I disagree completely.
