BOULDER —The 2015 NCAA Volleyball season starts on Friday and the University of Colorado will host one of the toughest non-conference tournament fields in the first weekend of play.

The Buffs, who are ranked No. 24 in the AVCA Preseason Poll, will welcome No. 9 Florida State, as well as San Diego and Oklahoma, who are both receiving votes in the poll. All four teams played in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and bring back a wealth of experience.

CU returns six of its seven starters from the 2014 team that finished 20-14 overall and tied for fourth in the Pac-12 Conference with an 11-9 mark. The Buffs have been picked to finish sixth in the Pac-12 this year by the league coaches.

#24 in nation = #6 in Pac-12

Buffs better perform well in a difficult OOC schedule, because there's no margin for error within the conference.

BOULDER — The 2015 NCAA Volleyball season officially starts on Friday and the University of Colorado is hosting one of the best opening weekend tournaments in the country with four of the nation’s best teams competing August 28-29.

The Buffs, which were picked 24th in the AVCA Division I Preseason Coaches Poll, will host No. 9 Florida State, as well as Oklahoma and San Diego, which are both receiving votes in the AVCA Poll. All four teams were 2014 NCAA Tournament participants.

The action starts at the Coors Events Center on Friday, August 28, at 4 p.m. with the FSU Seminoles facing the OU Sooners. The Buffs will square off against the USD Toreros at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, August 29, will be a busy day with four contests slated. OU and USD will meet at 9:30 a.m. FSU will face CU at 12 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Network. The afternoon session begins at 5:30 p.m. between FSU and USD. The Buffs will face former Big Eight/12 opponent Oklahoma in the night cap at 7:30 p.m.

Live stats for all matches can be found at CUBuffs.com, and the two CU matches against USD and OU will be streamed online for free.

(Moved from deleted thread.)

Good luck to the volleyball team tomorrow and Saturday!

Never knowing exactly how coaches treat these 1st matches (experimenting a lot?, going hard for wins?, nursing player injuries (like last year)?), will be interesting to see how this weekend goes. Assuming it's about winning from the start, I'd consider this probably the key weekend of the non-conference schedule. With Oklahoma and San Diego being perceived as pretty close to CU in expectations, how the Buffs do against them would for me (and assume coaches for polling purposes and so forth) define how "good" a non-conference season they have this year.
(My internal report card criteria going into the team's preseason (assuming no major injuries, etc.) is it will be a GREAT non-conference season if they can beat one or more of the Top 9 teams they play over the next 2 weekends (FSU this weekend, Penn State and Illinois next weekend), a good preseason if they can beat OU and USD, a fair preseason if they split with those two teams, and a bad preseason if they start out 0-5 and then lose to one or more matches against the 9 relatively low rated RPI teams (at least last year) they play in a row in non-conference after next weekend.)
