front runner for the QB job?

WOW! I hope he has the smarts.... ESPN picked it up and ran with it on the cold hard facts... any truth to this rumor?

Watching todays spring game, I would say he is the front runner. Better reads, stronger and more accurate arm. A long way to go and Nelson will only get better the more time he spends in the system. It just looked like Cody was better today.

I agree. He made some great throws today. He had a few mistakes here and there but nothing major. Nick Nelson also looked pretty good. But its still obvious he's still learning the system. I wouldn't count him out.
And how about Patrick Williams! I think he had a great day out there. A few mental mistakes but overall a good day for him.
Did anyone see the hit Ryan Walters put on Devin Head on the interception late in the fourth quarter! he lit him up.

i dunno...with the exception of a few errant releases i liked the way nelson looked yesterday. cody seems to know the system better right now and he was getting into a groove toward the end of the practice, but he also had a few knock downs and some picks that would have probably resulted in scores in a game situation.

i'm putting my money on nelson as the starter in the first game next year.

williams was a huge target out there yesterday! it will be fun to see what kind of numbers he puts up in the fall...

interesting..... I thought Cody was head and shoulders better than Nelson-
especially on 11 on 11 drills...

my $ is on Jr

I wouldn't go as far as saying Nelson is the starter, but I actually thought he might have played better. I think it's apparent that Cody has the better arm, but lilHawk also had some bad reads, particularly in towards the end of the game. Nelson seemed to be more consistent, and Cody missed a deep guy open at least once.

I say Cody starts, but would not be surprised if Nelson wins it.

you and the majority of the local sports media seem to agree on that point...

...of course i tend to take the opinions of the local media with a grain of salt. case in point; woody paige, who i'm sure makes a comfortable living as an "expert analyst" for local and national sports media outlets, can't seem to tell the difference between a defensive touchdown and one that was actually scored by the special teams...

Too early to make a good judgement. We need to evaluate the Oline performance in late August. If Nelson is unable to get a better grip on the offense than it probably would have to be Cody.

With inexperience on the Oline I am wondering 1) can Cody absorb the punishment that is sure to incur 2) does Cody have the escapability to avoid punishment when the Oline breaks down quickly 3) whoever can make the better reads on the D and make audilbles will be the guy 4) will Helfrich add some plays to account for Oline's inability to give the QB sufficient time to get rid of the ball. I would hope that RB's will be incorporated into the blocking system to help both the running and passing game.

I know that if nelson threw the ball it wouldve been picked for sure(in the first quarter). He realized that and the ball came off funny. imo.

are you talking about the two in a row in the corner of the endzone? possibly...point taken.

i thought the receiver ran a good route on the second one though and if he would have picked a good spot it would have given him a chance at a catch...

No this was during the 7on7. I think it might have been his first or second time on the field. It was on or around the 50. The reciever did a ten yard out and the cb was all over him. I'm not sure what he was thinking but he started to throw it and the pass fell about ten yards short. If he wouldve tried to force it in there it wouldve been picked for sure.
But the same thing applies here. I think he's trying to make too much happen. I'm going to give him some slack. Its only spring ball. But in the fall he needs to make it happen or Nick will be riding the pine.

I was disappointed in the QB play on saturday. Very little vertical game, QBs were slow making the decision to throw - took too much time, no real timing routes, ....

I don't know how people can say that Cody Hawkins has a strong arm because he does not...sure he can throw the ball with a lot of heat on the short passes but he does not have strength down the field. Hawkins also threw several passes into coverage where the dbs got their hands on it. A lot of tipped passes will end up as INTs in the season.

Nelson has better throwing mechanics than Hawkins but he was not making very good reads in the 11 on 11 drills. In the 7 on 7 I thought he looked better than Hawkins. He threw a couple down field but did not connect...the one that Walters intercepted, the receiver quit on the route --- getting tired of that.

As a point of comparison neither QB is as good as Joel Klatt at this point in time.

I hope all of these players work their butts off in the off-season because they all have a long way to go.

Sanders made some nice catches as did Geer.

I didn't realize Joel Klatt had any eligibility left, or that he was on the current roster.

Why not just come right out and say "Neither QB is as good as Joe Montana at this point in time." or "Neither QB is as good as John Elway at this point in time." or "Neither QB is as good as Peyton Manning at this point in time."

I am sure if Gary Barnett was still coaching you'd be all over the QB's nuts.

I think he was trying to say neither QB is as good as Klatt was during the spring going into his first season as a starter. I could be wrong though, and if I am, your point is well taken.

I don't think he (BlackNGold) has said a positive thing about CU, about Bohn, or about Hawkins since Bohn/Hawkins came on board. If someone can find a positive post by him, please show me.

As for the statement about the QB's -- I don't see why it matters whether either QB is as good as Joel Klatt. I doubt either QB is as good as Darian Hagan at running the option, either. I doubt either QB is as good as Kordell Stewart was, either. Hell - Vance Joseph was probably a better QB, too. Joel Klatt (and the other above-named QB's) had the benefit of a much better OL, a much better corps of receivers, a much better stable of running backs, etc.

This is 2007 - not 1989, not 1991, not 1995, not even 2003. Last year's starting QB went 2-9 as QB. The two kids who are vying to replace him are a redshirt freshman - and a JUCO transfer. Our offensive production last year was horrible. We had about 7 OL on the roster for spring football. And somehow - some fans expected the QB's to come out and complete 85% of their passes with dozens of touchdowns and no interceptions.

I expect to see much more "wrath" of angry fans should Cody Hawkins be named the starting QB. "He's too small" "He's too slow" "He's too short" "He's too weak" etc. etc. etc.

Am I the only one seeing the irony here??

I think, since Klatt was the last QB we had other than the ones on the current roster, that using Klatt as a benchmark can be informative. If that's the only purpose for bringing his name up, I can accept that. If there's another agenda at play, I think CU sports has seen enough of agendas aside from winning to last for a LONG time, frankly...

I agree, I walked out of Folsom thinking it wasn't very close. Both looked pretty good in the 7 on 7 but I think Cody really outplayed Nelson in the 11 on 11, especially when under pressure.

Exactly, As I clearly stated...as a point of comparison... I could of compared them to Craig Ochs who was the most ready to play QB as a true frosh that I have seen at CU since Detmer. But both Detmer and Ochs were highly rated coming out of HS.

Old Frankie Slade is always trying to put words in my mouth that I did not say...he doesn't like me very much...His problem not mine.

anyone else impressed with the way cody ran the 2 minute drill (i think thats what they ere running) i could be wrong cause i was pretty out of it.

It was a nice performance but I will be impressed when they can do it in a game. The defense was playing pretty plain vanilla on Saturday and did not put much pressure on the QB consistantly.

very true, he presence on the field was astounding, everytime he walked on the team seemed to change attitude. To me that is important to watch for in a team that went 2-10. It was more the way he commanded the respect of the offense that impressed me. I dont want to pass judgement on cody yet, but i think he definitely has the potential to run the offense and pick the team up a bit from a not so stellar year
