LA Times has an article that Lupoi is being investigated by the USC compliance office that he was involved in cash transactions to cover private tutoring and test prep for a potential UW recruit. The recruit never academically qualified so I doubt there is much exposure for UW.

USC is involved because their compliance office is vetting all the staff candidates Sark wants to bring with him. USC source in the article claiming odds that he is hired by USC are now "less than zero."

Good read for those under the false impression that Lupoi is just a really personable guy and great recruiter. There were reasons for the breakdown between Tedford and Lupoi at Cal. As I understand it, Lupoi's behavior and tactics were not supported by Tedford, but Lupoi's popularity and success in bringing in the guys with lots of stars after their names made him untouchable. This is really at the heart of the downfall at Cal. And just so everyone knows what Sark is all about, he couldn't get Lupoi on his staff fast enough or pay enough to land him. Petersen was also all too motivated to try to keep him at Washington.

Not surprised, the guy is too good to be clean. His success rate is too high.

Unless UW gets sanctions for his actions, this is the type of guy our staff needs. UDub is still struggling, but they went 0fer to a decent season far faster than we will.

    And yes, I'm joking. Sorta.

Eventually realizing he'd lost out because the guy's name is Tosh.

Not surprising. That is, after all, how the big boys recruit.

I would love it if the NCAA would allow us to help kids get better test scores. God forbid we got a kid into school who otherwise would not have had an opportunity at college. God forbid we provide him with the resources to succeed and overcome when in school. Of all of the sins of coaches and recruiters, reimbursing a dad for a class his kid took to get into college is one of the things I'd like to see happen! Right up there with an extra muffin for a walk on.

I guess I will need to find another example of "great recruiters" who bring in the highly rated kids, but somehow their teams never, ever improve.....

Wonder if it's inherit in that he succeeds with the poor character types?

I guess there is no middle ground between Romeo Bandison and Tosh Lupoi. Just have to accept that as fact now.

Didn't Cal repeatedly churn out NFL DL when Tosh was coach?

I hope no one is saying that.

But people kept putting Tosh up on a pedestal as the shining example of what a recruiting ace could do for you. The truth is that his recruiting never translated into wins and it was an open secret that he was dirty. Kind of like John Blake used to be thought of as an ace on the recruiting trail before the North Carolina reports came out.

I think a decent amount of people think pretty much all recruiters are created equal. See it all the time on this board when certain coaches get called out.

The best salesmen, regardless of industry, are those who find ways to grease the wheels without getting caught, or make so many sales that they're untouchable. Recruiting is simply sales.

This I agree with. Some people can sell - and close - while some can't.

My thought is that as long as the entire staff is motivated to recruit and works hard and smart at it, recruiting goes just fine as long as you've got a HC who can close. But within that, a program does gain an advantage if the assistants are good salespeople. Good example of that is Vanderbilt and the staff Franklin put together.

Some products require the salesman create long-standing relationships that are built on trust and their word (as in with High School coaches) and some products can get by with churn-and-burn tactics. The customer feels burned, but so what?

And nobody believes all recruiters are the same. I'm talking about significant deviations from the norm. I.E. Kentucky this year.
