Dom got a ton of hype and he has struggled to live up to those expectations.

Yaz got no hype and has far exceeded expectations.

Based on that, many people "feel" like Yaz is the better PG option. (Some people I respect have expressed this opinion, so I don't believe it's just something from a reactionary peanut gallery.)

But what do the numbers say?

KenPom (Using these because they normalize for the minutes played)

    ORtg: Dom 105.5 / Yaz 108.4
    eFG%: Dom 49.5% / Yaz 48.3%
    TS%: Dom 53.7% / Yaz 51.5%
    ARate: Dom 27.0 / Yaz 22.0
    TORate: Dom 22.8 / Yaz 18.4
    FTRate: Dom 27.9 / Yaz 36.2
    FT%: Dom .806 / Yaz .667
    2PT%: Dom .449 / Yaz .387
    OR%: Dom 1.1 / Yaz 0.4
    DR%: Dom 10.5 / Yaz 10.2
    Blk%: Dom 0.5 / Yaz 1.6
    Stl%: Dom 2.3 / Yaz 2.0
    FC/40: Dom 4.4 / Yaz 5.0 (both guys foul A LOT!)

Dom, for his ceiling and offense. Really shocked Dom's steal percentage is higher than Yaz's.

I kind of wish we could combine them.

It's crazy how close they are on everything. Even their FD/40 (fouls drawn) is almost a dead heat with Dom at 3.2 and Yaz at 3.0. But Yaz has the better FTRate, so he's getting fouled to result in shots more often. But Dom is making his FTs when he gets there at a much better rate, so evens that up and he's more reliable at the end of a game. But Yaz turns the ball over at a lower rate, so he's more reliable at the end of a game. But Dom makes more things happen with a higher assist rate and better shooting while doing a bit more on the offensive glass for 2nd chances. But Yaz still comes in with a slightly better offensive rating.

It's splitting hairs, man. I went with Dom for the reason you stated, but what I think is that we simply have 2 solid young PGs who continue to get better. Where this might actually be going is to a question of whether they should be on the court together most of the time. Good problem to have. Let's hope this keeps going the direction we want it to.

Dom seems to have more potential. Yaz is a scrappy player who plays hard every minute he's in the game. If we could somehow get that kind of attitude and place it inside Dom's body, we'd be in great shape.

I LOVE having them both on the floor at the same time. Really gets the ball into our bigs more... and limits the Josh fortune drives into 3 guys and turns the ball over type plays that we tend to bog down into at times.

That said, I think Yaz is making this harder and harder on Tad with his defense. Shutting down GP2 is what got Yaz those defensive minutes against Oregon. If that keeps happening... well, Tad has been begging for a perimeter defender for quite some time now.

I'm curious to see who's going to guard Andrew Andrews most in tomorrow's game and if he can get it done well enough.

I like Yaz better off the bench, he brings a different energy and the opposing defense must adjust.

I went with Yaz because his energy and competitiveness will help drive Dom's development and maturity, Dom should realize he's currently getting out-worked, and focus on beating out Yaz (which he's more than capable of doing).

    Dom b/c he's a 30x better player.

And this is where raw stats comparison don't mean anything, even if they are KenPom's adjusted numbers. Dom plays more minutes against the opponents best guards and Yaz plays backup against the 2nd unit.

Let's introduce Player C, should Player C be in the conversation to start? Player C turns the ball over comparable to Dom, but gets to the line more than Dom and shoots FT's way better. Player C also has the highest steal %, fouls less that the other 2 and also rebounds better.

    ORtg: Dom 105.5 / Yaz 108.4/ Player C 100.3
    eFG%: Dom 49.5% / Yaz 48.3% / Player C 40.3%
    TS%: Dom 53.7% / Yaz 51.5% / Player C 47.9%
    ARate: Dom 27.0 / Yaz 22.0 /Player C 19.5%
    TORate: Dom 22.8 / Yaz 18.4 /Player C 22.2%
    FTRate: Dom 27.9 / Yaz 36.2 / Player C 30.6%
    FT%: Dom .806 / Yaz .667 / Player C .947%
    2PT%: Dom .449 / Yaz .387 /Player C .342%
    OR%: Dom 1.1 / Yaz 0.4 /Player C 2.0
    DR%: Dom 10.5 / Yaz 10.2 / Player C 10.7
    Blk%: Dom 0.5 / Yaz 1.6 / Player C 0.0
    Stl%: Dom 2.3 / Yaz 2.0 / Player C 2.4
    FC/40: Dom 4.4 / Yaz 5.0 (both guys foul A LOT!) / Player C 4.3

    Who is this player C?

    Using sports reference...

    Win shares per 40 min:
    Dom .137
    Yaz .118

    PER (Player Efficiency Rating):
    Dom 14.4
    Yaz 10.8

Dom is more efficient than Yaz while having played 117 more minutes of hoop than Yaz.

LOL. Uh no. They're very comparable with AK getting the nod due to his superior defense.

Yaz has the best court awareness and passing ability.

Dom has slightly more diverse offensive game and is more confident in his offensive game.

There's a reason that Dom starts and Yaz finishes. Dom gets us leads and Yaz defends them down the stretch.

I am not sure it matters much, but I would go with Dom due to experience. We need both of them to develop their ability to penetrate more often. It puts so much pressure on the defense and opens shots for our shooters and layups for our bigs. They have both shown the ability to do it, but only sporadicaly. It would also get them to the line which would help us a lot during crunch time. Right now the only one who can get to the line when we need it is Jelly.

I was thinking along the lines of JG (not capable of putting the stats together so thanks!). I picked Dom because he has been facing the PG1 for the other teams and I think better overall competition at the position. With that being said, I love Yaz and what he brings and having both on the team is a huge positive this year. Both will get better and I hope we see Dom take another leap. He has this year and he continues to get better every game. No turnovers during the Oregon game and the numbers have been coming down every week. Fouls have been getting better, not great, but better.

    This.

And I'm excited that next year we'll have the depth in the backcourt to allow Yaz & Dom to play together at times because the limited minutes they've had together so far have been very promising.

Interesting considering he has the 2nd worst defensive adjusted +/- of the rotation players.

I think some expectations for Yaz may need to be tempered. My hope is that he stays in the same role all four years. By Dom's senior season, hopefully Peters is starting next to Dom and we have someone else starting next to Peters (maybe Brown or another recruit) Yaz' senior season.

Yaz fits that scrappy, steady, energy guy off the bench for 15 minutes per game just fine. Not sure I ever want him starting though.

Great question and thanks for the stats, this has been on my mind a while too.

I went with Yaz, but its close. My perception of turnovers at bad times was one factor, since we have a turnover problem on the team anyway. I with Darth in being surprised at Dom's steals being higher. And Yaz seems more confident and the energy is on the bench, too. I was at the stanford game right behind the bench, and I couldn't believe how down Dom's body language was on the bench the entire game. Everyone trying to pick him up, including Yaz and Johnson. Was just one game, but, not what I expected from a starting point guard.

I'm excited to see both these guys keep improving! Will be fun to watch.

As others have said; would it make sense to start both? I thought that there was some credence to the notion that both King and Fortune were more effective off the bench.

We wouldn't be able to play them much together as we don't have enough ball handlers. XT is more of an off guard who can handle the ball at times than a floor general.

So, do Thomas' teammates and friends call him Yaz, or is this still just an allbuffs thing?

I think they call him "Tommy".

If I keep hearing that from Tad, players and media I'll probably end up adopting it.
