Yea, I'm not even sure how to spell his name, but every time he writes an article on buffzone he gets his ass reamed by the comments people. The latest one on why he'd choose Tyler over Cody to start the season, the few comments so far seem like they have been written by people Niell once shoved into lockers in high school. I mean, we only have one columnist-only journalist in Boulder/Denver in Woelk, so why do we hate him so much again?

and no, this is not niell.

i used to really like Neil. but, he seems like a sunshine mouthpiece for the current AD/Hawkins/Bzdelik a lot of the time these days....his critical edge seems to have disappeared into template articles telling Buff fans to be patient.

in the end, maybe he's right....but, there have been plenty of things that deserve some journalistic scrutiny in the Bohn/Hawk era....and we didn't get that from Neil. just the internet fans, I guess.:smile2:

Because my daughter had a flat last night during a blizzard and Woelk didn't help her!

there are a bunch of weirdo/juvenile/outcast/antagonistic poster on buffzone whose single thrill in life is disrupting the message board. If Neil (or Kyle Ringo) says black, they say white. He says fast, they say slow. It's one big game over there. Once in a while there's a glimpse of insight, but for the most part it's just some buff fans fighting with either a couple of non-buff fans or maybe just one non-buff fan with a zillion user names.

I don't think it represents truly the general opinion of Neil Woelk, and ...
also, some people just like to argue. It's a particularly strange board, but I think that's because there's no moderation (as far as I know).

When I heard about her problem I tried to get there but it was just too far.

    Sorry for both of you.

I don't think most Buff fans dislike Woelk at all. Although it's been pointed out that there's another columnist in Boulder County that seems to have a better handle on things - Patrick Ridgell.

Buffzone comments are like shouts from the peanut gallery. Mostly just a bunch of yay-hoos that are easily ignored.

Ridgell has been the best for a few years now, I agree.

I also like BGBrooks from The Rocky/InDenverTimes now.

At least he's informed and fair.

I haven't read much of Brooks' stuff since the News folded, but he rarely wrote a column except for the weekly football spread and that usually had a national scope. He had a much different job than Woelk.

See what you think, some recent CU stuff by Brooks:

Versatility becoming second nature for Buffs’ secondary

CU’s Kaynor going all out for last season

Locked in tight race, CU quarterbacks have room to improve

And I thought he handled the Ballenger departure well.
For example, his quote by Hawkins about Ballenger sounded positive (the way I suspect Hawkins intended) and not --- well, he should try another sport, since he's no good at football --- as some reporters made it sound.

Buffs’ QB derby down to Hawkins, Hansen

Not saying a good reporter only writes positive stuff, but I do think reporters should avoid sticking their own opinions into stories.

I've met Neill a couple of times. He's a really nice guy. He is very easy to talk to. Good guy. I also like his articles.

I may have misread the first post I replied to. I thought you were comparing Woelk and Brooks. If you were comparing Brooks and Ringo, I couldn't agree more, and the Ballenger story you pointed out is definitely a an example of Brooks' skill.

I don't have any particular problem with Neil. I was saying that the posters on the Buffzone boards attack anything and everything, or at least there are a few constant bad eggs who make those boards particularly unpleasant.

I like Patrick Ridgell and BGBrooks. I have never heard of anyone saying they didn't like Neil Woelk, so this thread is a mystery to me, but I lead a sheltered life as far as getting other people's opinions on sports writers in Boulder.

Kyle is, sadly, sloppy in his work. JMO. He has access to great information, but asks bizarre questions and often gets the details wrong.
