People have been trying to manufacture Utah as a rival and there is just no way I can buy into that.

A rival is a team that you measure yourself by. Just like Duke and UNC in BB, ND and USC in FB, OU and UT, etc. And Utah will never be a school or program that I will measure CU against.

What set this off is something that has been bugging me for awhile. If you go back and look at Utahs recruiting over the past several years - they are signing more Jucos than KSU usually does. This year is no different - they signed 7 Jucos. I never measured CU against KSU and I am not going to start with Utah in the PAC 12.

Yeah, we don't really have a rival atm. Kinda sucks, but it's true. Maybe something will develop with one of the pac 12 schools, but you can't manufacture a rivalry.

I don't measure ourselves against CSU, but there's little doubt that CSU is a rival.

    Just sayin'.

When they cost a quality post season bowl (whoever they is), or best us year over year over year, then we will have a rival.

Kinda like how we beat them to take away the south title?

They dont like us, at all. From what I heard the fans in Utah were nasty, and very angry once they lost to us. A rivalry is brewing, you may not like it, but broken hearts and shattered dreams will build one very fast.

Not from my standpoint. I don't measure CU football by CSU standards. CSU is not our rival...we may be theirs. I do not get excited by beating CSU.

I get excited by beating the #1 team in the nation 62-36. I get excited by coming back to score 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to beat a hated rival and then play for the MNC.

The most fun i think i'll get out of this relationship is winning when we're coming off our worst stint in my lifetime and them coming off their best stint in history... even at 2-10, CU got the win. I can't help but think when the talent is accumulated that Utah will be our Pac 12 CSU.

you know, a certain team that also left the big 12 the same time as us could--and do--say the same thing as you just did in your post if one were to take the "S" out of CSU.

Playing CSU is a lot like having your prostate checked. You're not happy while the exam is going on. There are only two results that will come out of the checkup, one is horrible and the other result doesn't make you happy, just relieved.

I'm never happy when we beat CSU, just relieved. And when we lose to them I feel like the whole year is shot.

USC is the measuring stick for all in the PAC 12 to measure themselves by, this will be the annual game that I will look forward to the most, when we beat them we will know that we really have a special team that given year...

what makes you think they won't continue to improve. They already had good fan support and were successful with the pathetic financial support the Mountain West provides. Now that they have the support of the PAC:12 if they do this smartly they can build a great program.

Utah-CU has a lot of history and many people are still wondering why those two stopped playing after 1962. Between 1910 to 1947, the league championship was usually decided between us and the Utes. Now, wasn't that a rivalry? That was why Utah was chosen to be our travel partner in the Pac-12.

Utah is more of a natural rivalry than Nebraska will ever be and there are already rivalries between the two states' NBA and MLS teams plus the skiing teams at both schools are part of a friendly rivalry.

This rivalry between the Buffs and Utes started off the right foot by CU upsetting the Utes which did cost them a spot in the Pac-12 CCG. We should expect their best shot in Boulder this year and the good news is that it is the time of the year when the Buffs tend to play their best football while Utah has usually peaked by then.

Instead of fighting it...we should be embracing it. The only difference between us and them historically is that 1990 National Championship. Had the Big Six never invited us back in the late 1940's, Utah would have been our rival all those years...keep that in mind.

I do not agree. Eastern Colorado holds the vast majority of the population in Colorado and made a rivalry with Nebraska geographically easy. The keys to the rivalry were the Nub fan continual invasion into Colorado and that CU and Nebraska were always competing for the Big 8/Big 12 North championship. Not being in the same conference all but killed the Nebraska rivalry, so time to move on.

We are a geographical outlier in the PAC (even compared to Utah) and we would do well to have some success and develop a rivalry with someone other than Utah. You aim for USC, but it may develop with someone else. We are manufacturing a rivalry here, I don't see why we need to settle for Utah.

You totally missed the point. When CU decided to measure themselves (declare as a rival) against Nebraska we started getting ranked, winning conference championships, and finally a mythical National Championship. None of that was lost on those in Lincoln and for a short period of time you can bet that Tom Osbourne was measuring his team against CU.

Don't you think it funny that When Neuheisel and Hawkins de-emphasized the rivalry (lets keep and even keel) the program went down and when Barnett came in he re-instituted it CU won the Conference Championship. UCLA thinks USC is their rival, USC thinks Notre Dame is their rival, Texas A&M thinks Texas is their rival and Texas thinks OU is their rival. It is not always a mutual rivalry. I have no doubt that CSU places us as their rival unfortunately they have not risen to the challenge even when CU has been down.

The Utah Uteruses need to be our yearly momentum builder on our way to a bowl game or PAC12 championship.

I would hope that a rivalry can build with one of our other PAC12 South competitors like USC or UCLA.

On another note, I read today that the 2012 RMS has been pushed back to Sunday to accomodate a national telecast (likely ESPN or Fox Sports). Not exactly sure why those stations are interested in a national broadcast considering how bad both programs have been, but all exposure is good exposure I suppose. I think it also shows that regardless of what many of us think about the game and venue, the networks love the in-state aspect of it, especially that early in the season.

Well you can hop on the bandwagon and hate UW or Oregon fans because that seems the popular thing to do or you can do what one of the other posters said. USC is always the school that Pac-12 schools base how well they are doing on how they play against USC. Look at it from a Ducks perspective (I know you will hate this), but our geographical rival is struggling and our other rival UW has been our bitch for 8 years. So a lot of Duck fans have considered USC our biggest rival as of late since 2001 only USC or Oregon has won a Pac-12 title outright and the battles as of late have been very good. In other words the day you can consider USC your rival is the day you are back on top.

Sorry for the rambling still not quite awake lol

Totally get your point and we should just embrace everything from the 50's right?? Like segregation and racism, blue suede loafers, huge sideburns and poodle skirts. Elvis is dead and so is this bull**** rivalry. AND Did you just mention the MLS in a football board? For that, I say good day to you sir. I SAID GOOD DAY!!!

When you look at the PAC12 there is no way around Utah being a rival. I think we all want to be king of the mountains, and it doesn't have to mean more than that. We can still try to be the best and set up a powerhouse rivalry with Oregon, USC or whoever else emerges as the best of their own regional rivalry, but there is no way around this natural set up.

It is basically the exact same as our CSU rivalry. I would happily trade that for Utah. And I still would prefer a 3 or six year cycle of CSU, Wyoming and Air Force.
