One thing I was thinking about which is a good, or bad, indictment of Dan's coaching acumen is the fact that he always makes statements like "this was the best week of practice we've ever had" before a loss. Or, going into the season, "this was the best summer workout we've ever had!" Or, "man, we really had the best spring since I've been here."

Up until this year, he could get away with that because we all bought into the idea that he was building something. However, when you say stuff like that and then go get your asses kicked by the likes of CSU and Toledo, you're exposed as a fraud.

Hawkins is a fraud, plain and simple. None of us are buying his snake oil anymore.

We also have to consider that we don't know his criteria for "best week of practice" or "best summer workout". No injuries? No distractions? Everyone was smiling? Didn't run out of snacks? Grass-frolicking a success?

Unlikely, given the pay cut he'd take, plus all of his other gigs. But, I think he'd make a helluva offensive coordinator. Shanny himself has said that Logan has a genius offensive mind.

For Woelk to change his tune like this, suggests to me that he heard something he couldn't ignore.

The thing I hate is Bohn, Hawkins and Woelk make it sound like Dan Hawkins is the only coach in the US that is doing things right and that it is an impossible task. Just is not that way, IMO. CU actually had a higher academic progress rate before Hawkins got here which is always dismissed as a function of attrition...so what why are players leaving without being ontrack to graduate???

I think most coaches want to do things right.

This honestly made me laugh. You think Shanny needs to learn recruiting from A to Z? Have his assistants recruit the players and he shows up in the living room with his 3 rings to close the deal. I see it going something like this:

Mike Shanahan: Hi Mr. 5* player, I'm Mike Shanahan. Would you be interested in playing for Colorado? I can promise you that on your first game as a Buff, you will walk with me out of the tunnel into the stadium where I coached in the NFL for a decade(Rings happen to catch the light at this moment). How does that sound?

5* player: Where do I sign?

This is the part I don't get. Outside of Denver, how many high school kids have ever heard of Mike Shanahan? I don't think he's the household name that Bronco fans think he is. He's obviously a very successful NFL coach, but I'm not sure his success translates to the college level. I think he could do wonders for Denver area support of CU (read: $ and media interest), but I'm not convinced that he would be a cinch winner at the college level.

How well did Bill Walsh recruit to Stanford when he came back to the program? they stagnated pretty badly after 1 great year.

I guess. If you want kids from Texas, then you need to hire someone they've heard of. Maybe I should send footballcoachscoop.com a quick email to let them know about the conversation I heard about between Mike Bohn and Bum Phillips...:smile2:

There is talk of Jerry Jones trying to hire Mike Shanahan and you don't think Texas High School players know who he is?

Many recruits parents know full well who Mike Shanahan is and would love to be able to say that their kid was recruited by and played for him.

Don't get me wrong. I hope so. But recruiting is such a huge part of college football, I just don't know if he would do as well as many on here think he would. I think a safer bet is an assistant coach from a big time school, with a proven track record in recruiting. I guess, we'll see (pun intended).

Spiff, brotha, c'mon. Let's give the TX kids some credit here on this one. I mean Kyle Shanahan (former UT WR as we all know) is now the OC for the Texans. Kids in Houston at least know who he is, and if being Texans OC doesn't remind them they will certainly remember him as a former UT WR. Hell, the kid across the street my kids play with all the time knows who Kyle Shanahan is and he's only 10 years old!

Oh yeah, forgot to say how he likes to show me how knowledgeable of Bronco fb he is by saying, "Yeah, Kyle Shanahan...he's the son of Mike Shanahan who coached the greatest QB who ever lived, John Elway and the Broncos to 2 Super Bowl rings in a row." (OK, I embellished the John Elway thing, but he said something to that effect and I was impressed)

Yep. Kid is 10 years old (born after Bronco Super Bowl greatness), wears burnt orange every day but Sunday when he wears a flippin' Cowboys jersey, and he knows who Mike Shanahan is!

The Shanahan name resonates louder than you think my friend. (Wow, "resonates" I just dropped a 10 cent word!:smile2:)
