FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team will kick off the 2013 spring season Sunday at 9 a.m. with a home match against the University of Colorado.
The dual match Sunday is CSU’s “Orange Out,” and admission is free. It will take place at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness, 901 Oakridge Dr. in south Fort Collins behind Sam’s Club.
After taking a three-month break from play, the Rams look forward to a fresh spring featuring new talent.
The Rams’ roster features five freshmen: Maddie Buxton, Mollie Cooper, Kendall Heitzner, Abby Stevens and Jennifer Weissmann. They are joined by juniors Lauren Pick and Kaley Schultz, and sophomores Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska.
The Rams have never beaten the Buffs and in last year’s matchup between the Rams and the Buffs, Colorado walked away with a 6-1 victory over Colorado State.
Heffron comes into spring play after leading the Rams in total wins last season with a record of 21-17 overall. She also earned all-conference honors as a freshman, and her 21 singles victories are tied for fifth all-time on the CSU single season list.
Colorado comes into the match this weekend with a record of 2-1. Of the six returning players for Colorado, junior Carla Manzi Tenorio earned the team’s most improved player award, in addition to being named the co-team player award winner. She tied for the team lead with nine wins, with six coming at No. 5 and another three wins at No. 4. Colorado State will have a short break before returning to the courts for two matches in as many days. The Rams will travel to Lincoln Neb., for back-to-back matches against Illinois State (Feb. 16) and Nebraska (Feb. 17).
