List your top 3 requirements for a HC that you'd want here at CU.

    1. Can get top coordinators to come here (coaching and recruiting base in Cali and Texas); no more learning on the job. We need this for an immediate turnaround next year, otherwise the rebuilding continues.
    2. Experience in a BCS program whether it's as a coordinator or a HC at a smaller school (Big12 preferable due to TX ties, but Pac10 would help too due to Cali); would be nice to have someone that has dealt with tougher admissions requirements than other schools.
    3. Someone that has a vision for the team and the team can rally behind immediately (great speaker and motivator with a proven record). The guy would have to recruit lights out to save this class and stop the mass exodus we may see given that we are a young team.

For success at CU, here are my 3 things:

    1. BCS experience (knows what life is like in the big tent & part of a big-time coaching tree).
    2. Recruiter (the most successful college coaches have a passion for it).
    3. Boy Scout (has to run a clean program or it will never fly in Boulder / at CU).

Hawkins failure was mostly because he didn't have #1, imho.

    1. Coordinator or HC experience in the Big XII, SEC, or NFL.
    2. Advanced understanding of the running game, or brings a run-oriented OC with them.
    3. If we bring in an offensive guy, he needs to have someone lined up for DC who can recruit bigtime DB's. We need to be landing 4* safeties, if we want to compete for a Big XII title.

    1. Good recruiter
    2. Will hire good assistants
    3. Is able to come in and start ASAP (i.e. does not stay with anyone else for their bowl game)

All of this leads me to think Jon Embree is perfect for the job.

    1) On the field success (recruiting/game-day coaching)
    2) Runs a clean program (not in headlines for wrong reasons)
    3) Doesn't want to coach anywhere other than Boulder, no matter what other BCS schools are willing to pay.

    1. Will come in and coordinate either the offense or defense himself. I don't think we'll be able to hire both a really good OC and DC. HC doing one or the other would be key.
    2. Can recruit California AND Texas.
    3. Knows good assistant coaches and can hire them.

    1) Team GPA of at least 2.7.
    2) Able to maintain image of squeaky-clean, academics-first program despite arrests, academic ineligibility, and scholarship losses to APR issues.
    3) Able to convince fan base and media of recruiting prowess despite being, well, not very good at it.

This is all we need, really.

    1) Good recruiter, it should be easy to recruit to Boulder. A good recruiter should take advantage of that.

    2) Can develop talent. The difference between an average coach and a good coach is developing the talent they have. This is also the reason I'm fearful of Shanny, NFL guys don't know how to take an 18 year old high school kid with raw talent and turn him into an 22 year old man capable of competing day in day out at the BCS level. They get guys already developed. And before you say it's all about assitants, NFL HCs seem to be all about systems and system implementation than player development. Sure there's exceptions like PC, but for every PC you find, there's 20 Bill Callahans to counter.

    3) Head coaching experience. I don't want a coach that has to learn on the job, give me someone who knows the ropes and how to delegate his time.

My top three choices if the Buffs do indeed make a move: Gill, McCarney and Patterson.

Seems like you want Tom Osborn, isn't he like 90? I think he's too old for this gig.
