Pretty good Q&A with Sonny Lubick in the Post

He was pretty candid:

Mr. Sonny Lubick, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for bringing CSU football to the potential it could be. I graduated from CSU in 2001 and watched your teams beat some great programs in big-time games. CSU used to be (like) TCU or Boise State when you had the reigns. It's time for you to be the athletic director, or director of football operations, and hand pick the head coach. This program needs to get back on track and in the right direction. What do you think?
— Brady, Pullman, Wash.

Lubick:Well, Brady, thanks for the nice compliments and that's very flattering to me. We did have a good run at Fort Collins. I think we won 7-10 games a year for nine straight years.
But let me just say this: When we were there I had a great staff and great support, but I always wondered if it was sustainable, to use a current business term. I felt like we were always fighting an uphill battle. I don't know, maybe we left everybody with high expectations, because no matter who is up at Fort Collins, it's going to be hard. Really, you are sometimes facing schools that have, at minimum, at least three times the support you do.

haha, Sonny tells one of his own how it is.

CSU has never been on even ground with FBS level schools and is continuing to fall further behind. Sonny simply tells it like it is, the supporters of the program have never stepped forward in a way to support a quality program and as other schools continue to move forward CSU hopes at best not to decline.

They will keep fantasizing about being "big time" and having some "mystery donor" step forward and bail them out or magically get a share of the BCS bowl money and the AQ conference TV money. All the while they will keep falling further behind.

If they want any kind of chance to suceed then they need to seriously consider FCS and sooner than later.

Maybe if lamb fan put more than 12k in the stadium for a game things would improve. Either way screw the lambs. They get what they deserve.

CSU is a mess. A total waste of potential. They could be so much better, but they just don't have the commitment to get there. Even if they did magically conjure up a true commitment to their athletic programs, it would take 10 years just to catch up. Sonny is right, they're constantly fighting an uphill battle there. Horrible facilities, nonexistant administrative support, zero community support, bad PR, no marketing to speak of and lukewarm fan support.

Let's go Rammin!!!

Sonny benefited a ton from being at CSU at the time that ESPN was growing and the WAC/MWC was the first conference to take advantage of the opportunity to play games on Thursday nights. They got a ton of exposure they had never gotten before. That well has kind of dried up since the BCS programs are willing to play those games now. That era may have been a once in a lifetime thing.

You give their fans far too much credit.

CSU is pushing to get their season ticket base up to 8,000. To put this into perspective after looking at the CSU-Pueblo thread I did a little research. They are approaching 6,000. This is for a program that has been in existence for less than 5 full years and is D2. A part of this may be that CSU-P season ticket prices are lower than CSU-Ft. Collins but it still is an indictment of the fans in Ft. Collins.

Now hold on a darn minute...I thought we were waiting for a "mystery donor" to bail us out.

Every program in the country is looking for a mystery donor (maybe other than Oregon and Okie light.) The difference is some are looking for a donor to step the program up, CSU is looking for a donor to keep them from falling completely into oblivion. I would also say that you chances of having that donor show up are somewhat in proportion to butts in seats in the stadium. We are getting close to 50K, they are well under 20k now.

+1 and they suk ! csu-Pueblo is going to pass them straight up ^... listening to sonny is like listening to holtz, you feel like telling him c'mon man spit it out !

on an unrelated note, do we completely stop reading the denver post or do we click and read on every buff article so it will force them to write more about the buffs?

I didn't even read the response from ol' sunny lube-a-dick. Couldn't make it past the comical delusion.

They were pretty good at one point, but certainly not rocking it like TCU and Boise have been the last few years. We're about to go back to 55-10ish wins for the Buffs every year.

They never quite got to the point that TCU and Boise are with frequent rankings in the top 10. They were however for a time consistently the highest ranked program from outside of a major conference on a regular basis with rankings in the top 20.

Problem was that even during this time, they never came close to averaging 30k home attendance for a season and they didn't get significant ratings in their TV appearances. Since then their attendance has consistently gone down, their donations have not gone up, and as everyone else continues to develop programs they fall further and further behind.
