What exactly made him a 5* and Dillon a 3*?

Matt Barkley (8-4):
176 for 322 2877 YDS .547 COMP% 23 TDS 18 INTS 85 QB RATING

Shane Dillon (8-3):
181 for 301 2510 YDS .601 COMP% 18 TDS 9 INTS 94 QB RATING

So what exactly is the difference between rankings? Level of competition? Hopefully Nik or BB can chime in.

Shane committed to us -thus the degrade from even 4* to 3.

****ing star ratings - Shane will show 'em.

Star ratings are really dependent on how often they are scouted, who offered and what their level of competition is. Then there is the biggest one which is human error and while star ratings are nice I have learned to trust what the coaches think over recruiting services.

The same could be said for Connor Wood to (stars just look better when you click on the CU page)

Connor Wood (8-5):
213 for 398 2669 YDS .535 COMP% 19 TDS 9 INTS 81 QB RATING

It is more than just stats - they're also evaluating the physical and mental capabilities of these kids.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe Barkley was the first freshman ever to start a QB for Mater Dei, so being a 4 year starter at a very good program gave the scouts a lot of tape on him. He seems to have lived up to his rating too, so I don't see the problem.

Southern California powerhouse High School Mater Dei vs. El Cajon Christian Tini....

Compare the level of HS competition faced during their respective years within each program. Same thing happens with rankings for kids coming out of Long Beach Poly and almost every big time LA City Section football school. In Northern California, it's Concord De La Salle and Grant in Sacramento. Are all the high school football programs and leagues in the greater Denver area equal? Statistics and sizes being similar, the prospect out of a big time hs program in a tougher league will be ranked higher in most cases. They'll also be the most closely watched candidates by Div I schools.

Probably for much of the same reasons that NFL scouts don't rate Russell Wilson, RGIII, Case Keenum and and Kellen Moore higher than Andrew Luck you idiot.

First of all, as others have said, he played for a powerhouse in Mater Dei in one of the toughest leagues in southern California, so he had exposure as a high school freshman on. Just as importantly, he was a standout at several camps:

-Palo Alto Nike Camp (May 2007)
-Huntington Beach passing tournament (July 2007)
-MVP of the Los Angeles Nike Camp (April 2008)
-USC Rising Stars Camp (June 2008)
-Elite 11 (July 2008)
-MVP of the Under Armour All-American Game (January 2009)

If you recall, Dillon had an okay Nike Camp and a really good Elite 11.

He also had a monster junior season that got him noticed by just about everyone. He was named Gatorade POY for his efforts that season. But honestly, just take a look at the tape and it does not take a talent guru to figure out which player is a better prospect:

vs.

Both are really good QBs, but Barkley is much more fluid in his mechanics and delivery. He also flashes really good arm strength on several throws to the sidelines. I am excited to have Dillon in the fold, but it is hard to say he is at Barkley's level with a straight face.

I'm not saying Dillon is on Barkley's level at all, was just wondering what the difference was. What about Connor Wood? Both him and Dillon played in low classifications and posted similair stats.

i believe he said what the difference was in that post

That was for Barkley, didn't see anything about Wood and when I said I was wondering, that was me understanding. I'm not familiar with California high school football which didn't help.

Connor Wood made noise during his sophomore season that got him squarely on the radar of several top programs. He flashed ability in the air and nice scrambling ability. Then he hit several major camps/competitions the summer before his junior season and showed well:

-Georgia
-Oklahoma
-Texas
-Texas A&M
-LSU

He also made strong impressions at a few 7-on-7 tournaments, especially against bigger school competition. The 7-on-7 tournaments are a big showcase for Texas high school players. He also showed well at several camps and combines throughout his high school career, along with a strong performance at the Army All-American Bowl events.
