Very happy to see that Shane is a winner. But, I'm just wondering if anyone has some insight on how competitive the CIF San Diego Section D5 exactly is? Is this one of the better divisions in California? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to California high school ball, so any knowledge would be appreciated.

It's in the small school division just above 8 man football. The division consists of schools with enrollment 350 to 500 something. Plus they were in a parochial not public small school league. In Southern Section (they are in the San Diego CIF Section) they would be tantamount to a divison 10, one being the the biggest. So, the level of competition was not very good. It will be hard to judge his innate abilities jumping from there to a BCS school.

Well this is surprising/disappointing. I was hoping that Shane's numbers were not off the charts because he was playing some serious california ball. I don't see any reason why a BCS level QB shouldn't just annihilate the competition in such a crap division. Obviously the kid has the tools to be good, or else he wouldn't have all the offers and the elite 11 status, but I'm a tiny bit worried now about his transition. I'm really glad we have Wood now, that way we can let Shane make a smoother transition.

The other side to that coin is that his team isn't very good, nor is his coaching. Stats aren't everything either, or else Folsom HS in norcal would be churning out Tim Tebows.

Haha, yeah I like those ^^^^ numbers a lot. Trust me, I realize numbers aren't everything, but I also come to realize that the reason why we look at numbers is because they are often an indicator of performance. Combining numbers, opponents ability, and the talent around you is the best way to look at it. I was just surprised that his numbers weren't more mind-boggling considering it is a lesser competitive football league. Either way, I'm not trying to knock Shane, I'm extremely glad we got him. go buffs

Shane Dillon still was a finalist in the Elite Eleven QB competition. That matched him against the top QB's in the country from the high school ranks. Not worried about it. He has the talent, and I sense the "it" factor we have been lacking from a QB in many years. He has been one of our biggest recruiters after all. He wants to bring his talents to CU and that is fine with me. A year lifting and being coached by Rip and I believe we will have quite the QB competition in a couple of years.

So was Cody Hawkins, right?

Cody wasn't 6-5 and didn't have the opportunity to be coached by an actual QB coach at the college level.

At 5-11 its hard to throw the ball over your 6'4" - 6'7" offensive line, let alone the equally large defensive lineman jumping up to deflect your pass.

Cody was a great kid, and had a lot of pride in the black and gold, but he was not nearly as physically gifted as Mr. Dillon appears to be.

I'm pretty sure Cody was simply invited to the elite 11 competition when they used to invite more than 11 QBs. Let us not forget his Dad probably played a part in getting him there. Dillon finished ranked like 6th or something at the elite 11 according to the coaches.

Dillon is a much better prospect than Cody. That being said, he's a project and by no means is a certain answer for us at QB. We need to land another stud next year to make sure we're covered.

The format for the Elite-11 changed before Dillon was invited. Previously, invites were extended to 11 qb's. Now, there are regional competitions and the best from those are invited to the "final". I believe they bring in 24 qb's for the last round of the Elite-11.

Dillon achieved #7 at this year's competition.

The competition in the Coastal League is one of the toughest in Southern California, they have beaten top rated Division I, II III and IV teams in and out of San Diego County. Ask any sports writer in San Diego County and they will tell you the Coastal League is the SEC of small schools in San Diego.

Rashaan Salaam came out of the Coastal League that Shane Dillon plays in.

The Costal league has won the San Diego CIF quite a few times, examples:

2011-2012 Christian wins CIF, ranked 2nd in the Southern Section of California
2010-2011 Bishops wins CIF, Parker Runner Up, Bishop's wins State DIV 4
2009-2010 Parker wins CIF runner up in State 44-40 DIV 4
2008-2009 Parker wins CIF, Bishop's Runner Up
2008-2009 Bishop's wins CIF, Christian Runner Up
2007-2008 Bishop's wins CIF, Christian Runner Up

2010-2011 players from Coastal League with scholarships, 2010-2011.
Bishop's Alec Fisher (Columbia).
Bishop's Micah Seau (SDSU).
Christian's Tyrone Sauls (Air Force).
Francis Parker's Matt Wile (Michigan).
Francis Parker's Roland Jackson (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo).
Horizon's J.J. Hall (Trinity International).
La Jolla Country Day's Stephen Dennis (USD).
La Jolla Country Day's Mical Bailey (Trinity).
La Jolla Country Day's Fiaalii Junior Togiaso (Cornell).
La Jolla Country Day's Ruben Pena (Trinity International).

Shane ends his high school football career with 6,600 passing yards.

Just an FYI, Shane plays in the toughest small school league in California. The team he beat in the Championship game was highly ranked (top 20) of all divisions in SD. The non league games Christian plays are not against small schools.

Shane is well coached. The OC at Christian has coached 3 out of the top 9 All time passers in SD County History and worked for former Cleveland Browns Coach Sam Rutigliano (Brian Sipe and the Cardia Kids).
