Neutral Site media rights must go to Pac-12

Interesting clarification on conference rules.
No member institution shall enter into an agreement to play a neutral-site football game (except in circumstances where such neutral-site game is the away leg of a home-and-home series) unless such agreement provides the Conference with the exclusive broadcast rights and digital rights in all media, and copyright to such neutral-site game.
Basically no more scheduling CSU series in which the theoretical home team gets the media rights.

It will not allow us to get out of our CSU agreement early, but it ensures we will not enter into another.

Sounds like it would allow for CU/CSU at SAF if CSU wanted to play their home games there, as long as CU's games were at Folsom or the conference got the exclusive rights to the series...

Good. Now not even bohn will be able to give them something for nothing.

Bohn probably lobbied for this rule to take some of the political pressure off of him in negotiating the series. Sorry Ewes, we are part of a new conference and cannot live with the game in SAF unless the Pac owns the broadcast rights. By the way, the split just got uglier for you if you want to go this route as well. By the way, how is that new stadium coming along? We cannot wait to play there in 2030 or whenever you get it built.

I love that this will provide leverage to ALL pac12 teams to play their OOC games at college stadiums.

I am in favor of any rule that brings an end to the debacle at Mile High....

Best case this makes all CU home games played in Boulder. Regarding who broadcasts the game, I would guess lambs would prefer PAC network instead of the crappy network that does their conference. Much higher payout on PAC network.

I don't see how this will affect the current agreement with CSU, but it pretty much eliminates any chance of renewal on the same terms.

This is also another nail in the coffin of UT ever being in the Pac 12.

:woot:

I'm not so sure. The OU-UT Red River Snotfest at the neutral Dallas location would just be a conference game. It means UT and OU would be a package deal, which is no surprise.

I'd like to think there is a conference nail. But I suspect we will hear about Texas joining the PAC the next time the TV contract comes up for negotiation.

I am not sure whether or not I am excited about this rule or disappointed. If this is true then games like Oregon/LSU would have never happened and even with an Oregon loss it was a nice experience interacting with a new fan base. It could also help Oregon who has struggled with scheduling because teams have always used the simple excuse of Autzen being to small for them to sign up for a home/away series. Oh well if Scott says so then I trust whatever he thinks is best since he has done nothing wrong as of yet.

It will make Oregon/LSU scheduling more difficult, but what if LSU(or another school) agreed to give up the media rights to the PAC-12 network in exchange for a flat payment? I am not quite sure of the logistics but it makes sense to me.

Might not have the impact that some think...The annual CU-CSU game is a home and home contract with CU getting the rights one year and CSU the next...CSU's year could be interpreted as the away portion of a Home and Home series. But I would love for the game in Denver to end on any basis possible - the game is one of the worst fan experiences ever in so many ways.

It would be a mistake to believe my observation as some kind of endorsement. Yes, UT is a conference killer. No, I don't want them in the PAC.

But money talks. It's going to take more than neutral site language to keep Texas and the PAC commish from continuing to size each other up.

You can't be too vigilant about these things. The moment it will happen is when we least expect it.

I'd breath a lot easier if there was a "no Texas clause" that went further than terms of the shared media rights.

For a true coffin nail I submit the following rules in the Pac12 charter:
"Texas shall only enter the PAC by itself and not in conjunction with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, or any other univeristy located within the state of Texas."

"Texas shall be a non-voting member for the first 5 years following it's acceptance to the conference."

"Texas waives it's rights to act independently in the negotiation of primary and lower tier media rights"

"Under no circumstance would Texas have more favorable access to California schools for football scheduling purposes than any non-California school."

"The conference headquarters and conference chamlionship game shall not be permanantly located in Texas.

I agree with this - I believe the rule was created to A) ensure content is directed to the p12 network and B) ensure teams cannot circumvent the equal revenue sharing by scheduling the neutral site games, which often contain a payment from a 3rd party such as ESPN in the millions of dollars for both teams. Not exactly fair when revenue sharing is even, then you can go around that and get paid more. I think the pac 12 would see the Denver game as a home and home with one league getting the rights in odd years and the other in even years.

Very good point - as I said above, it looks like the p12 doesn't want to lose content to other networks, which is exactly what a neutral site game does.... and it lowers the value of the p12 network in the end. That said, I'm not sure I like the 100% revenue sharing model because it seems to discourage playing big name teams... or more precisely it doesn't ENCOURAGE big OOC games enough. Big OOC games add to the conferences TV package value, but while the extra revenue is shared by all teams, the risk of the loss is a burden on only one team.

Monetarily, it makes the most sense for teams to do home and homes at their college stadium and retain their rights... The capacity of Autzen would not have been a logical reason for LSU not to do a real home and home with Oregon... LSU would have sold out their game in Baton Rouge for HUGE dollars, and wouldn't care how much Oregon can make at Auzten. I believe LSU received $3.5 mil for the Dallas game... but with a home capacity of 93k, they could easily bring in 2x that at home versus Oregon. This is because there is no third party making money off of the game. Now would LSU agree to a home and home w/ Oregon? I don't think so... too intimidating and too far for a SEC team to travel IMO. Though you do have to give them some credit for playing @ WVU and in Dallas. Florida doesn't even leave the state.

Could the P12 will develop a mechanism where they pay a big time OOC team to play on P12 net? It doesn't make sense for a P12 team to ever pay big money out of their own pocket - it would cost much less to get a low FBS team or even a FCS team on the schedule and the cut from the conference TV $$ would be the same due to the revenue sharing.

I have a feeling, that like most fans, the pac 12 is very interested in these marquee match ups OOC. I have a feeling there must be a loophole or something we as casual fans do not see in the legalese of this rule. I am pretty sure Scott would encourage UO to play LSU, I wouldnt be surprised if it meant they had to Play on ESPN and the pay out that would be for the ducks would instead go into the conference pot.

The big OOC games in the future will be with the Big 10. We'll get a steady diet of USC/Wisconsin, UO/Michigan, UW/OSU, etc once the new deal gets put in place. Where this will hurt will be when we want to schedule games against the ACC/SEC or B12 (shudder). I don't see a lot of OOC games against those conferences happening any time soon - if ever.
