Based on Tad's presser, it seems pretty clear that he's not envisioning Ski in the 6th man role again. He also referred to Spencer as a pure point guard.

With that, I think we can pencil in the following:

1 - Spencer Dinwiddie
2 - Askia Booker
3 - Xavier Johnson
4 - Andre Roberson
5 - Josh Scott

I'd also pencil in the following primary backups for each position:

1 - Eli Stalzer (I think he beats out Xavier Talton, who redshirts)
2 - Jeremy Adams
3 - Sabatino Chen (I think Chris Jenkins redshirts, because we can afford to)
4 - Wesley Gordon
5 - Shane Harris-Tunks

Looking at this, I have to say that I'm excited about the skill and athleticism of the starting 5. I'm also excited about the defensive ability and toughness of the reserve 5.

But the reserves look like they're seriously challenged offensively for next season. We desperately need Adams to find his offense and Shane to continue to progress in the post or it's gonna be ugly when we rest the starters. We could have 5 guys playing close to 30 minutes a night if that bench doesn't develop.

Thoughts?

I can't disagree. I would put the same starting five together. Another option I would consider is to see Stalzer or Talton come in and start at true PG. It is a tough role, but our offense is pretty simple so I think it could work.
I enjoyed Booker and Tunks coming off the bench. Might be worth it to keep this combo together.

It is going to be interesting to see how fast Scott and Gordon adapt to this level of BB. I don't think Scott is going to end up as a 5. I think his skills translate into a big 4 although at times we may go without a 5 and Scott will be the big man on the floor.

It also wouldn't surprise me if the adjustment is fast to see Gordon starting at the 5 with Scott at the 4. SHT would be the primary sub when they want to go big or Andre slides to the 4 when they want to go smaller.

I agree with you on Talton and probably Jenkins RSing. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Adams take a big step forward now that they know what his health issue is. In that case he may end up at least a part-time starter at the 3, especially against three guard line-ups.

If Stalzer shows a solid level of maturity and PG skills we may see what becomes primarily a three guard rotation with Ski, Din, and Stalzer getting the bulk of time there. Chen would likely be the #4 guard, I think Adams spends more time at forward and against big wings.

I have this weird feeling that gordon is going to start over scott next year

Scott is more advanced and has a much more diverse offensive game but Gordon is way ahead defensively and physically much more ready to battle with college level inside athletes.

I could see it happening too, but either way, were going to have a strong big in there starting with either one, and a strong big in as a rotation guy. I really love where our roster could be next year. I just really hope to see Talton and Stalzer be ready to contribute enough to validate those scholarships

i'm looking forward to seeing how shane develops this year. his game and confidence throughout tournament play seemed to step up to a higher level. interesting that nik didn't mention shannon sharpe in the OP...is he a bench rider? he got some minutes early in the year but seemed to move down the bench as the year progressed. maybe he is one of the guys tad is thinking may "transition"?

i think Wes Gordon can and will play like Dre did his freshman year... almost an out of nowhere type player because other teams will be preoccupied with the starters and he will go up against players far weaker than he is

Let's hope. And it's a good point about Dre that people tend to forget... he did not start as a freshman.

I think Scott will probably be the biggest of our starters, but he won't play a true 5, similar to Austin this year. So few teams in college ball play a true 5, I don't think it'll be a big problem. The 2013 lineup should be more traditional with Gordon at center and Scott at the 4.

It may not really matter much beyond the pre-game summary in the papers. Tad has already shown that he is willing to use a variety of lineups depending on the situation. We could eventually see Scott playing anything from the 5 to the 3 in the same game. The good thing about the guys that Tad is recruiting is that he seems to be looking for athletes who aren't restricted to one position or one style.

So I thought he was starting to get better and really watched him in the UNLV game (seriously watch the game again). He is a terrible passer and had about 4 turnovers himself. His hands are just terrible and has way to many stupid fouls. The guy will never see more than 15 minutes per game IMO.

that is the very reason why i oppose the four year scholarship commitment...

Bolded will not happen. Josh Scott would have started for us this year.

Josh Scott like all freshmen will struggle early. SHT more experienced will start early. Josh Scott in my opinion can get stronger.

Scott is not going to be a center and Gordon is not going to be a PF, reverse the two positions for them.

It would not surprise me (not expecting it but wouldn't be a surprise) to have SHT start, at least early in the year.

And unles he gains 20-30lbs and becomes much stronger and more agressive, Mills will be the last man off the bench.

Unless SHT makes MASSIVE improvements, he will be nothing more than a bench player.

Apparently you missed the last 1/3rd of the season, he made massive improvements during that time. The first 1/3 of the season I didn't understand why he saw the court, the middle 3rd he was servicable, the last 3rd he actually showed he had some game ( which I had never seen and didn't think he had). SHT (no longer Simba in my book) actually showed some solid/strong post moves, looked like he was moving with such greater agility and dropped dimes in that baylor game. SHT maybe more than anybody other returning player I am interested in seeing the jump they make over the summer.

Agree with buffnik's starters though, I really hope Tad doesn't make rotations in "shifts" again (starters then 2nd unit). I really would have liked to see more of a lineup where dufault moved to the 4 along with SHT at the 5.

Nah I saw every game except the UNO game and while he made strides, he has a lot longer to go and he does not seem to be physical enough down low. I really hope he can make those strides but right now I don't see it.

Gotta agree with your starting 5 prediction.

I sure hope SHT continues to improve (he still has PLENTY of room to do so). I'd like Shane to have a ball in his hands all hours of the day, just to get more comfortable handling it, dribbling, catching, etc. Picture the lame movies where the guy who screwed up carries the ball with him all the time. I want that to be Shane.

I'll go back and watch the Baylor game because he was beyond awful in the UNLV game. Every time he made a bad pass or another player stole the ball from him he had a terrible foul in retaliation. He was completely indecisive when he got the ball and looked pretty clueless on the offensive end.

Don't get me wrong, he can look completely lost and indecisive at times and dribbles way too high and methodical like a 3rd grade girl. Just saying when he finally does make a decision he made some solid moves and looked way better the last part of the season. (outside of the unlv game that is, you are correct, he looked terrible)

SHT is going to take a massive step forward this offseason. The trip to Europe is going to do wonders for helping him develop some new tricks. Watch and learn, Buff fans.

Since Tad pretty much said that Ski will be starting next season i bet we go

Mayor
Ski
Johnson
Dre
Scott

Gordon and Jenkins and one of the freshmen point guards off the bench should round out a good 8 man rotation with great punch off the bench. Really cant wait to see this supposed improvement everyone is expecting from SHT this offseason. Honestly im not sure hes ever going to get it.

Another thing is that i really like ski off the bench as a prototypical 6th man, then i could see out lineup looking like

Mayor
Johnson
Dre
Gordon
Scott

Maybe we should just move dre to the 3 already and go big so for once we can rebound the ball.
