Ultimately, this season has to be considered a minor success for the women's team. They weren't quite as good as their undefeated non-conference schedule made them out to be, but they weren't as bad as their 6-12 conference schedule made them look. Ultimately, I think the truth lies in their NIT run where they went 3-1 and hung close with an Oklahoma State team that ended up winning the NIT tournament and, according to many, was robbed from an NCAA Tournament bid due to a disastrous loss in the Big XII Tournament.

As with the men, let's start by taking a look at next season's roster.

Official CU Roster

While the Buffs will lose Julie Seabrook, they return everyone else on the roster (note: like the men's team, walk-ons have been removed for this exercise). The woman who kept the team running, Chucky Jeffery will be back once again to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists like she did last season. The key will be finding someone to step up and take some of the pressure off of Jeffery. It would be absolutely huge if Kyleesha Weston could step in and provide 10-15 minutes per game running the team and allowing Jeffery to not have the pressure of keeping everything running.

While the Buffs will be without Seabrook's presence in the post, they have re-enforcements ready to go. Along with both Rachel Hargis and Jen Reese, who provided solid minutes for the team last year, the team will have Arielle Roberson and Jamee Swan coming in. Reese was really starting to show some progress before her unfortunate injury late in the season and should be expected to take a good step forward next year. If Roberson's game is similar to her brothers, that should help the team with rebounding. Swann should be able to provide some low post scoring. The team will miss Seabrook's three point shooting however as she led the team in percentage.

The backcourt is where things are a little exciting. Along with Jeffery, the team returns Meagan Malcolm-Peck (who started all but two games this season) to go along with Brittany Wilson and Lexy Kresl. Kresl brought the outside shooting we hoped she would, leading the team in 3 point attempts. Now it'd be nice to see her shooting accuracy rise a bit. 31.8% isn't too bad, but if she can get closer to Jeffery's 34.8%, she could be deadly. It will also be interesting to see if Meagan Malcolm-Peck can re-discover her three point stroke. Last year she shot 18.5% from behind the arc. The year before she was 35.8% from back there. Her finding her stroke again could be a huge key to if the team is a tourney contender or headed back to the NIT. Wilson should continue to provide solid all-around play in the backcourt. Jasmine Sborov and Brenna Malcolm-Peck (if she can finally get the injury gods to stop cursing her) should round out the backcourt rotation.

I'm excited to see where Lauren Higgins ends up playing. She's similar in size to the Malcom-Peck twins, and she's another one whose shooting ability makes her dangerous. She's not a danger to take the ball to the post, but according to HoopGurlz her range extends "feet behind" the three point line. So with both her and Kresl out there, it should open things up down low for Reese, Swann and the other front court players.

So what to expect for next season? Honestly, I think the NCAA tournament is a realistic goal. It's going to be tough, but if they can get a little help at the PG position, then the pieces could be in place for a decent run. Like the men's team, the women will be going on a trip this summer. They'll be heading to Italy. For such a young team, it should help them gel. Also, the team has two scholarships available at any time if they do find another player that they would like to add to the roster. The only recruit that AllBuffs is aware of that the Buffs are still in the race for is Asia Booker, a PG from Texas. It'll be interesting to see if the team tries to add a little depth behind Watson or if they hold those scholarships over.

Wilson needs to find some consistency. One night she'll be dominant, then she'll disappear for a couple games. Improvement there and from MMP along with an upgrade from the talented youngsters makes this a tourney team.

The only problem with tournament predictions is the strength of the conference. Like with the men, Cal was the only Pac-12 team to get an at-large bid... although USC could've made it if they'd been even remotely consistent. It would be difficult for CU to finish in the top 3 or 4, but anything's possible.

Especially since this is coming. (I know the photo's not new, but it doesn't get old.)

That's a great picture.

Honestly, our recruiting class is great. If Kyleesha can just come in and just run the offense, we could see dramatic improvement. Add in Swann and Roberson (I'm counting her because of the redshirt) down low and Huggins' shooting ability, and we could see some improvement.

Yeah I think the Women see a big improvement and make the NCAA's next year. I think they catch the Mens team in the wins column and standings next year. The women have more talent coming back and just as many impact Freshman (if you include Roberson).

It won't be easy, for sure. We must see improvement from most positions. And while we are excited about the incoming Freshman class, as we should be, there are 5 other PAC schools in the top 30 with CU (#27), according to Hoopgirlz (#12 UCLA, #14 USC, #23 Stanford, #28 Washington and #29 OSU) and all 5 of those teams finished ahead of CU this past season. Now I don't know what those teams are losing to graduation but I would bet we don't lose as much as most, so that should be in our favor.

Plus we have Lappe! I like our chances to move up into the top 6 and quite pssibly an NCAA bid.

Go Buffs!

It would be great to see a stronger non-conference schedule. I know its coming, any ideas on who that might be.

Do the ladies have any tournaments lined up like the one in San Antonio we had this year?

Great analysis Goose and good comments from everyone. I made the mistake of going back to visit that other board and that's not the place to have a serious discussion about the WBB team. Thank you all for what you do here.

As for next year, in this article from the Boulder Weekly, http://www.boulderweekly.com/blog-288-buffs-progress-in-lapperss-second-season.html Lappe says that she felt they were about 4 wins away from the NCAA bubble this past season. And there were that many winnable home conference games where they just couldn't hold on to leads or dug too deep a hole to climb all the way back from. The help coming in next year, IMO, is greater, potentially significanty greater, than what we lose. Plus we now have experienced a season of the PAC-12 scheduling and have more first hand knowledge of the teams and their coaches. Add those together and I think the goal should be NCAA. Especially since CU is hosting first and second rounds next year so the team would get to play at home if they make it. M-O-T-I-V-A-T-I-O-N.

Here's a good analysis from Brian Howell, looking forward to next season, that contains some of Coach Lappe's perspectives on the questions that most of us have had when we look at this team.

I am more excited for each oncoming season where Lappe gets to coach her own recruits. I see a difference in playing style between her own recruits and the players she inherited. The inherited players were recruited to play run and gun basketball, which is not the style Lappe will be playing. She puts a strong emphasis on defense, which was not the case with her predecessor.

I think the juniors and seniors will be pushed to get better and be more consistent by the freshmen and sophomores. Reese was really coming along before her injury. Sborov was getting better every game. Kresl learned to play defense. Great strides were made by this year's freshmen class. I'm hoping next year's class will do the same.

Lappe is a demanding coach and I'm sure her recruits are told that. I didn't see KMM as a demanding coach. She was more in to who is babysitting my kid and giving the players hugs. There were lots of quotes about how she treated them like "daughters". Players aren't your daughters. They are given athletic scholarships to perform athletically and scholastically. I think Lappe expects that of her players and will settle for nothing less.

After all, the Coach that recruited her to play for Colorado, coached just like that.

Lappe is her own coach, but she does have some of the same requirements for her players that Barry did. Kids are different today than when she played and she is aware of that.

I can't wait for the team to be going to the Dance every season. I hope the motivation of playing in Coors for the 1st and 2nd round of the NCAAs will be enough of a carrot to get them over the hump in some tough games. I also hope the pre-conference schedule improves dramatically and soon.

I will add I hope we land Booker. This team needs a true point guard.

Yeah. Considering we have none now, it makes a ton of sense to bring in 2 this year. Having both Asia and Kyleesha would make for more competitive practices where both units are playing the same style. That's important. It would also set us up with depth at the point, even though it would be young. We're not going to overpower teams in the frontcourt, so it's really important that we fix the turnover problem and get more steals... while running our opponents out of the gym.

She's the only player that Hoopgurlz has us currently looking at. I have to think that with two open scholarships we have to at least be exploring a few other options. Have you heard anything on this front?

I listened to Linda Lappe interviewed on the radio. I really like her. I can definitely see young ladies wanting to play for her. She came across as very charismatic to me.

BTW, since I don't follow the ladies that much, how good is Roberson?

We don't know. She was under-recruited like Dre was. We're basing a lot of our excitement on the fact that everyone in her family had great college athletics careers and also because of how great Dre has been.

I think we should be excited, but I also think we need to be careful not to put too much pressure on her to be her brother. She's going to be her own player.
