Bill Han**** on BCS scenarios: "I can officially say that the status quo is off the table."

Han**** says the goal is to be narrowed down to 2-3 models by end of day tomorrow.

we are gonna have a ****ing PLAYOFF YESS.

Looks like Pac12 wants only conference champions to go:
Larry Scott on being "warm" to inviting only conference champs: "I'm in favor of a more objective , less subjective criteria."

SEC disagrees, shockingly:

Slive wants Nos. 1-4: "This is not a tournament. It's to figure out who the best teams are and let them play for the national championship.

and the SEC doesn't like the idea of having the first round on campus. **** you SEC.
Mike Slive on home sites: "There's a lot of advantages and disadvantages. It may have more disadvantages than advantages."

http://twitter.com/slmandel
however...

@schadjoe: Larry Scott on if Final Four w bowls can work w Rose Bowl incorporated: "Yes."

Something doesn't add up. If this is restricted to conference champions, but there's only four teams, which conference champions get to go?

The ones that matter: Pac, SEC, Big Ten(12) and whatever emerges from the Big XII disaster.

No ACC? The folks at V Tech, Florida State, Clemson, etc. might have something to say about that.

I think the PAC doesn't care beyond ensuring that 2 of them are the B1G and the PAC (rose bowl winner).

Would be probably the highest BCS ranked conference champs. I can see the SEC argument here. I agree that Alabama was a top 5 team last year. I do think that their previous loss to LSU should have kept them out of the title game. That is why a selection committee is being tossed around. Have a group of people who actually weigh issues like that to put the best 4 in the playoff. In most years I think that those 4 will be conference champs and all within the top 10 of the BCS anyway.

If they were going to have conference champs, they should have all 12 division one conference champs play in a playoff. Give the top 4 ranked teams of the conference champs a first round bye and there you go. But that adds 4 games to the end of the season, making it 5 post season games including the conference championship game. I think this starts getting away from one of the things that makes college football unique and so much fun. With that type of system I think you start to lose the value in individual games.

There isnt really a great answer to fix this with the way the system is built. Once we see the 4 super conferences, then I think we see a shift that allows for some serious reworking of the system.

Well there you have it. You expand the national championship to 4 teams and you get immediate bitching about the 5th best team. Hell, we were all super pissed because CU got shafted out of a field of 65 last year.

The bowl system isn't going to go away, regardless of our feelings. What about the current bowl system, with the winners of the four BCS bowls in a playoff?

If they want a true playoff then it needs to be the top 4 ranked teams. The conference champ model will not give you that.

Wish they would just rip the band-aid off at once and make it a 8 team playoff. 4 super conference winners and 4 at large. On campus until the final game. Would LOVE to see the SEC schools play in the cold weather. Saw it every year in Montana during the I-AA playoffs, the fast, quick teams hit the cold and then they fold. We'd finally see what works best, the speed in the warmth or the ground and pound(and home field advantage for once) in the North. I can guarantee you wouldn't see the domination the SEC has experienced recently. So tired of all these home games for the warm weather schools in the bowl games.

^^This^^

Almost immediately after they announce this we start getting the call to expand to 6, 8, 12, 16. . . . No matter how many you put in whoever thinks they would be next in line complains that they didn't get their shot or that they were better than one that got in.

Then you hear the arguments about how much money they could make with "just one more round" or the argument that it isn't fair to whichever conference doesn't get in, although the superconference system will answer that eventually.

The ACC could have some championship caliber teams in the future (FSU, Clem, Miami). Hmmm

This may be answered as well if we end up with four superconferences of 14-16 teams each. These schools would likely be absorbed into one of those conferences, FSU and Clemson would be close to locks. Miami may be in trouble in this scenario since they don't draw huge crowds, aren't a TV ratings powerhouse, and may be facing some of the toughest sanctions ever handed out by the NCAA short of the death penalty.

If you want playoffs watch the NFL. College football is unique and interesting from week one because every game could potentially put a team out of contention.

Playoffs don't answer the question of which team is best that year, only which of the teams that qualify is hottest at the end.

This is the system I would like. They can keep the tie in to rose bowl which would make the Pac-12 and the Big 10 happy. We would essentially have an 8 team playoff. BCS busters could make it into the playoff. It maintains the integrity of the regular season and it maintains the integrity of the bowl system. It creates as close to a true national champ as we can get. It seems that this would be the best situation.

Instead they are going to make this really complicated and its gonna make everyone unhappy.

This season was the tipping point with regard to that question. We had a rematch for the National Title. If LSU had won, they would not have been true champs because they already beat bama. With bama winning we now have a situation where each team is 1-1. Now we have a tie, and in a tie there is no true champ either. The system is broken.

I agree on this year but that is a flaw in the selection process. I know Bama won but in my mind if you don't win your conference you shouldn't be in.

I think a playoff makes it worse. Soon we end up with a 16 team playoff or even an 8 were a two loss team wins the title over an underfeated team coming in. Again not the best that year, just the hottest at the time.

No matter what system you use somebody is going to complain that they should have won it. That is one of the things that makes college football so much fun.

I won't stop watching if we have a playoff but I will enjoy it less.

And if the Top 4 ranked teams are all from the SEC?

Rankings are done by people and is biased and not representative always of play on the field. If we go to a playoff there needs to be a system where the best teams all get to compete. I hear what you're saying and don't have the perfect answer.

I don't think 4 teams is adequate, ultimately. I do think that major conference champions should have a shot regardless of rankings if we want the title to be won by play on the field...

I generally think the teams that peak late are the better teams anyway, so this doesn't bother me. Every game is just as important as ever (maybe moreso) because you have to play your way into that field of 8, or whatever the number is. That means we may have 10-15 teams still in the hunt as the season comes to a close, rather than just the 2 or 3 teams that are drawing votes in the AP poll. I like the idea that an early season loss may not end your season.

Uhhh, this past season disproves your point.

NCAA BB tourney most years proves my point. NFL absolutely does, Giants were one play away from not making the playoffs but win the SB.

College football is a great game, I don't get why people want to change it. Playoffs won't make it better.

That's why you don't put 16 teams in it. Make it a 6 (top two get a bye) or 8 team playoff and worst case scenario the 6th or 8th best team out of 100+ wins, not too bad in my opinion, and more often than not the best team should prevail. As several already stated, put the top 8 (whatever combination of conference champs and at-large) in the BCS bowls, winners make the final four.

Once it starts it will never be limited to 4,6, or even 8 teams. The whining and crying will continue until we have at least 24 teams included. In my mind there aren't even 6 that deserve to be mentioned.

I could support the existing bowl system with a plus one to determine the title but I will say not thanks to any more than that.

Do you mean 68? Yes, I know this just goes to help prove your point even more.

The only fair way to do this is to give auto bids to every conference champion from a BCS conference and then round out the rest to get to 16 teams by using the current BCS ranking system so that the highest ranked teams that didn't win their conference get in to make a 16 team playoff. This solves the problem of the Independents like Notre Dame and better teams in crappy conferences like Boise St. Give a few teams a bye week and play on campus for the first round... Everyone is happy!

With this system, no one who has any possible gripe about being the best can get left out and really resolves all the problems. Plus all regular season games are even more important since your ranking determines your seeding/home field advantage/if you get a bye week/etc.

Anything less than 16 teams will create problems with schools complaining that they should have been in, and anything with more than 16 teams is too much and will take longer than the current bowl season.

The ACC would likely be one of the conferences doing the absorbing in the powerconference scenario.

I've never seen an underfeated team get beat by a two loss team. Would enjoy.
