In today's Thorburn chat, Ryan stated with certainty that Shannon Sharpe will not be with the program this year. Additionally, Mills is still deciding.

The quote:
"Ben Mills is still on campus going through "Maymester." The big guy is weighing some options whether to transfer to another program or remain at CU. Shannon Sharpe will not be back next year. That means Boyle will have at least two scholarships for 2012 (Sabatino Chen is the only senior next season) and at least three if Andre Roberson were to turn pro. The Buffs plan to bank Sharpe's scholarship for 2013 unless an "impact" transfer were to join the program."

Mills must be having difficulty finding the right situation. He's obviously got one foot out the door.

Additional from Thorburn on Sharpe's transfer:

"I can tell you this is more about family responsibility than lack of playing time. He's trying to find a place to play in Southern California."

wow, something must have changed. Earlier he was looking at schools in the Northeast. This has been a flip flop situation for sure.

Claiming a family hardship and getting an NCAA waiver keeps you from sitting out a year.

Sharpe out.. Mills on his way.. Wow things change quick.

Like the strategy to hold the scholarship for 2013. Such a good recruiting class we are in on.

supposed both Mills and Sharpe leave, that leaves us this 3 scholarships that will open up for next year. Now can Tad sign four guys in Feb, expecting that a spot will open up from dre going to the NBA? Can he oversign the class?

yes. He can oversign if he wants. He can also wait until he knows for sure that 'Dre is coming out... A lot of good players will have signed in the fall though.

I hear Sharpe's going to Cal State Fullerton

If true, I wish him well. Hopefully he'll get some PT if he transfers.

Also, the article states 2 schollies with a Sharpe transfer, but I thought it would only be one? I'm pretty sure Chen will need to pay his own way next year, so nothing opens up when he leaves.

Staltzer is getting Chen's scholarship next year. For the 2013 class, Chen is already gone. Assuming Sharpe leaves as is being reported, that opens up two scholarships for the 2013 class. If Mills leaves or if Dre declares for the NBA, that's another two potential scholarships for that same class.

I am officially dreaming for back to back top 25 recruiting classes.

Screw that. I'm wishing of a top 10 or top 5 class. If everything goes to plan, we will have Mills transfer and Dre leave. Giving us 4 schollies to use on, Bird, Hamilton, Hopkins, and Lee.

I always liked Shannon.

Now the question is whether it's still appropriate to wear my 4 year old "Shannon's Sharpshooters" t-shirt to games. I think there's an argument to be made that it's more cool to wear it next year than it was this year (when he wasn't getting minutes and didn't shoot a high percentage when he did).

I read that as my 4 years old's t-shirt and the picture popped in my head. Going to go drink 10 beers now.

"Shannon's Sharpshooters"

Wow, talk about an oxymoron.

Anyone remember when Bzdelik said that Sharpe was going to be just as good as Burks? There is a quite large chasm between being an NBA lottery pick and being a member of the Trey Eckloff ass-splinter club.

To be fair Shannon looked like he was going to be a very good player for us. His whole game was impacted when he got hurt.

Your post comes off as a cheap shot against a guy who came in as a Buff when it wasn't something guys were lining up to do. It's a shame it didn't work out for him in Boulder, I only wish him the best in his future.

Right, so Chen shouldn't even be in the conversation when we're talking schollies. I think the issue is that everyone is trying to count backwards (players leaving), rather than just counting the actual number of scholarship players. Either that or I'm just missing something, which is entirely possible. We have 13 available and I count the following on scholarship for 2013: SHT, Adams, Spencer, Booker, plus the 6 incoming freshmen, which is 10, plus possibly Mills and Dre. So with Sharpe leaving, there's one available. Mills would make two, and Dre three. Or am I off-base here?

What else would you expect from JeRK? Why is he in the green repwise?

Agree - Shannon was a spark off the bench before the Buffs had Chen and Ski, who were more prominent in the same role. Plus he gave the fans a reason to cheer when Shannon Sharpe was announced over the PA. (Remember there were some bleak time not long ago). I hope that the Buffs continue to become more talented and recruit more and more gifted athletes over the coming years. However I hope the growing fan base doesn't degrade the players who came before with less talent to get the program to a place where it could recruit that level of talent.

All the Best to Shannon, hopefully things work out with his new team!

Shannon Sharpe is the OC Oliver of the basketball team. Only OC didn't transfer.

So, is there some rumor that 'Dre may enter the draft? I haven't been paying attention.

Not a rumor. Statement of expectations by folks in the program. I think even Tad and Dre said as much.
