Worst football hiring.

I wouldn't count Weasel just cause he was our coach. It is just saying hirings not overall coaches and its Bleacher Report...

Yeah, I know. Bleacher Report should be ignored generally. However, CU ****ed up in their hiring of coaches, ADs (Tharp!) and Presidents (Judith Albino ugh). Trend has been good of late on many levels, which makes me hopeful again.

So according to Bleacher Report college football history began in 1996. Good research.

Nice find...that is more than a year old and put together by some dude in a basement.

I don't know if this was posted earlier but i found it interesting.

Weasel's biggest mistake was leaving CU.He could recruit, but wasn't good at other aspects of coaching. He had a good record at CU, and GB won the Big 12 with his recruits. I couldn't stand the guy personally, but he always had good seasons at CU. He also beat CU when he was at UW and UCLA. Hawkins deserves to be #1 on the list - dude was a total dip $h!T.

Any list of worst football hires that doesn't include this guy is totally useless.

Ehh I don't know. His teams lacked discipline, lots of penalties and an inability to run the ball. He did good his first couple years with Mac's recruits and momentum, but his last two seasons were not great. He was picked to win the national title by Sporting news in '97 and had a losing season. He had a bad relationship with his players too. He made an ass of himself on national tv chewing out Hessler in the '97 Michigan game and Chris Neaole picked him up by the shirt and threatened to beat the **** out of him in the lockeroom.

I never liked Slick, but his record at CU was nothing to gripe about considering what it's been for the last 6 years. I think he could have stayed on and had winning seasons, but nothing close to Mac.
Neuheisel had
two 10-2 seasons and subsequent 5-6, 8-4 and 7-5, leaves for UW. I would kill for an 8 - 4 season in 2012.

Nueheisel had the same problems everywhere he went. He could scheme and run an offense but he didn't put enough attention or at least wasn't successful at recruiting and developing guys for the LOS. Remember when GB took over he couldn't run OL drills in practice because he didn't have enough players to do it. When he went to UW he inherited some very good OL and by the time he left it was in ruins. You can argue the same thing at UCLA, he brought in skill players but failed on the lines.

I think he also gets way to much credit for coaching QBs. As a former college QB and an offensive mind people assume he should be able to coach QBs but how many have done notably well under him?

He did well at CU but as Mac's recruits left the program his success tailed into what we saw from him as his norm elsewhere. Had he stayed what would indicate that he was going to start turning CU upwards. It may have been a hidden blessing for us that he left.

Do you really think Neu would have an 8-4 record with the program Hawkins burnt to the ground?

anyone on this board could have won 10 games in 95 or 96 with Mac's talent.

i wish he would have stayed longer, but no way Callahan is a worst all time hire. was he a bad move that suckered the red sansabelt nation into believing he invented the forward pass while he was destroying their precious tradition....sure. but, they didn't realize it until later and then pretended like they always hated him and didn't want to can Solich (hypocrites). he recruited well, left Pelini stocked with Suh et al.

kinda like Rick, never really came through at the QB position. Zac Taylor was a tough QB for them but ripped by the huska fans....harrison beck, joke. etc.

8-4 was with his recruits for the most part, but with Hawkins program he would probably have had the same success as Embre. I never liked Neu, but he didn't do a bad job while he was at CU.

Except for that '97 season

Neuheisel was only here 4 years not 5 and the team was on a downward trend.

Ironically, Hawkins may have been a better hire after McCartney than weasel. Hawkins did a good job maintaining and improving the BSU program success that he inherited. Blasphemy, I know.

77. You can chalk the 10-2 seasons up to McCartney. Those teams were loaded. I shudder to write this, but even Hawk would have had trouble doing much worse.

The downward trend was very disturbing. Neuheisel's teams were getting progressively softer. Plus he never turned out to be the QB guru that he was billed to be. Even back then, everyone was yelling at him about his inability to recruit a good QB.

Plus, didn't we vacate wins on one of those other three seasons because Fisk was declared ineligible? My recollection may be poor on that, so don't quote me.

Very true. The weasel has proven he isn't a very good coach. And he hasn't shown he can recruit and develop linemen. He screwed up the offensive line at CU when he let Terry Lewis go.

I still have trouble even thinking about how bad Coach Dayen was. Biggest coaching phony there ever was.

If it's true they were on a downward trend, it was because the 1994 Buffs was the most talented team to ever wear black and gold and Slick Rick began the downward trend. He is a joke.

Considering Slick pulled 10-2 seasons, I think it is not only feasible but probable that coach Mac could have easily had us in at least one other MNC game in those 2 years...sigh.

96, lost to Michigan by 7 and Nebraska by 5. Had chances to win both those games late. Also we shut out a top 10 Kansas state team at home in a cold ass game.

1995 10-2
1996 10-2
1997 5-6
1998 8-4
1999 7-5 Barnett You are right, but that's a damn good record for 4 years, except for 1997, and the 8-4 was with all his players for the most part. I wouldn't call 8-4 downward. A coach like Mac is a once in a long time thing. GB won the Big 12 with Slick's players in 2001,and 2000 was a disaster 3-8.

Can't believe you're defending Slick.

I can't stand the SOB. Read my posts. All I'm saying is you ain't gonna find a coach Mac every hire. Slick was a stinking rat, but he won while he was here. Was he as good as Mac - absolutely no. Do you think Slick left the program in better shape than Hawkins?

A garbage can would have had Slick's winning percentage with the program he was handed. The program lost probably as much ground relatively under Weasal as it lost under Hawkins. He sucks plain and simple, and was a poor coach. He didn't win here, he was able to avoid losing for a while thanks to being handed the keys to a Ferrari.
