Basketball growing in Canada...good recruiting opportunity for Buffs?

I think we need to be more focused than that. We'll have our core areas and that's where we should focus. There's more than enough talent where we are already recruiting to have a consistent Sweet 16 program.

pass on international players for the most part. we've not had great luck with them and with precious few exceptions they aren't the way to build or maintain an elite program. and, while the international game is improving the elite players are acculturated into turning pro...not spending a year or 3 in college. if you are recruiting a 2 or 3 start type player, there are plenty of those in the US....i don't see the reason to go after unknown quantities. or unknown unknowns as Donny Rumseld used to say. it's like jucos to me. you just don't know until they are on campus.

being in the Pac, our pipeline is the same as football...building a brand in Cali, the Pac NW and locking down the state and to some extent the mountain region. Texas has a lot of talent the last decade or so...so that's worth attention now that region has imploded a bit from being Big XII country at the D-1 level....so, kid looking for something new/diff might find it in Boulder. we might not (for now) beat Barnes or Scott Drew's cheating machine for a top 15 one and done type but there is deep talent in the state.

Marc Van Burck. Finished his career at Cornell. Non-factor here.

It's hard to establish a pipeline or just relationships with programs/coaches internationally when you have so few scholarships available each year. Much tougher to scout someone overseas, keep up with them and project how they would match up with the usual talent coming out of American high schools and prep academies. So while we got solid contribution from a couple of guys from Bzdelik's foray into Australia, I don't see that as an area of focus that would bring long-term success or would be worth the effort unless we could get in on a consensus #1 prep player from there whom other top D-I programs are contacting as well.

Canada's a much different story, though still international, because the western third fits the Pac-12 footprint more than any other major conference. It would be worth taking a look into what's happening at the junior level and track which of those heralded prospects are going to the States to matriculate at one of our prep schools. The trick is then to see him play early on once he is here and try to be a welcome committee of sorts to this country when making contact so he can later say in interviews with the recruiting services that Colorado stands out because we were in on him early. But looking at an international player who hasn't had the chance to show if he can be dominant against good American high school-level competition is a crapshoot, so I prefer buying domestic until we locate the expats who are playing prep or AAU competition on our home turf.

It's like anyone else. If they seem to be a good fit to the program, obviously should try to get them. It's not an area where CU wants to make Canada a pipeline, likely.

There will be years where recruiting in Colorado and California might be weaker then normal/some of the top recruits in CU's main pipelines might go elsewhere
