Want Beer In Folsom? Sign This Petition!

I’m a student at CU and am starting a mini campaign of sorts to get alcohol sales instituted at CU sporting events. One part of this process involves getting as many signatures as possible on the petition linked below:

http://www.change.org/petitions/institute-alcohol-sales-at-university-of-colorado-sporting-events

I know that many of you are in favor of this as well so if you could please sign the petition that would be a huge help. It’s quick and easy. It asks for your name, email, and (sometimes) address, and frankly none of that even has to be valid. Please also try and spread this link around; send it to fellow Buff fans via Facebook, Twitter, email, etc. After you sign there is a pop-up that will allow you to use those mediums to send out the petition. It would also be really helpful if someone who has an account on Rivals, Buffscoop, and Scout could post the petition’s link and my explanation on the boards there. The more signatures we can get the better. Eventually, this petition will be submitted to Mike Bohn along with a position paper on the topic. I also have some other ideas of things I’m going to try and do. Hopefully, with your help, we can get this ban overturned in near future.

I’d also like to use this thread to have a constructive discussion on the issue. How do you all feel about the alcohol ban? Below are the basic points of my argument:

Alcohol sales at sporting events would likely raise over $1 million in additional annual revenue for the athletic department; a department that always seems to be struggling financially. In fact, this year they had to borrow several million dollars from the university to make up for their budget shortfall. Additional funds would certainly be beneficial and could be utilized in a multitude of advantageous ways. It seems ridiculous that the athletic department is willing to take unpopular measures to improve finances such as whoring out the naming rights to Folsom Field and taking payouts for one and done games (and likely losses) at Michigan and Ohio State yet they wont do something which is just as profitable and is overwhelmingly favored by their fans. It’s further strange that the university is willing to spend $7 million to put up new scoreboards and tens of millions into facilities improvements all in the name of enhancing the fan experience and yet they refuse to do something that would enhance the fan experience and not only wouldn’t cost them anything but would actually make them money. It also seems rather hypocritical that our basketball arena is named after a beer company and yet it is somehow ‘taboo’ to sell beer in that arena.

In addition to being financially prudent, alcohol sales are also favored by a vast majority of Buff fans and would help to make games more entertaining. There are approximately 30,000 season ticket holders between football and basketball and the school should be doing everything within their power to maintain and enlarge that list and to keep those constituents happy. CU should be accountable to and indulgent of us all. We are the ones who cheer for the teams, purchase tickets, merchandise, apparel, and concessions, and we are the reason why ESPN and Fox are willing to shell out $3 billion (over $20 million a year to CU) for the rights to broadcast games. In essence, we the fans subsidize the entire athletic program. In business the customer is always right. If we want beer, we should get beer. It’s not as though we’re asking for an infinity pool to be built atop Dal Ward, this is a very reasonable and practical request.

Are there going be drunks in the stands at games, sure, but likely no more then or a negligible increase from the amount that are currently there even with the alcohol ban and CU does currently have enough security employed to handle these issues. People will always be drinking regardless of CU’s policies; they might as well be the ones who control, regulate, and are the beneficiaries of this practice. While it may sound counter-intuitive, it’s also fair to think that alcohol sales could actually make sporting events a safer place because they would reduce the amount of heavy binge drinking that routinely happens prior to games. Similarly, alcohol sales would give fans more incentive to leave their pre-game gatherings and get into games earlier; an issue that the athletic department has been trying to address for the past couple of years. Alcohol sales could also coincide with a campaign on the Universities part to educate and remind its fans of the dangers associated with excessive consumption of alcohol.

Colorado
produces some of the greatest beer in the world and the combination of beer and sports is a time-honored American tradition. It’s time for CU to reap the benefits of this custom. Please sign the petition and help to bring the prohibition of Folsom (prison) to its well justified end. Go Buffs.

I wouldn't go through all those arguments. I'd simply point out that the reason the ban was put in place to begin with was to cut down on drunkenness in the stands. It has failed miserably at that task. Therefore, it's incumbent upon the administration to recognize their mistake.

they will just serve the same crap that passes for beer in the basketball club room

You should conduct some research into how banning alcohol during games contributes to binge drinking before games. Tell them what the current literature is saying, and highlight the risk.

Yes! More beer the better to spill on Utah fans.

LOL...a BYU QB went off after Ute fans poured beer on his family.

PAC-12 rules will probably have a say in this and I heard somewhere that beer sales outside suite boxes and club seats are not allowed in the conference. So this petition might be in vain.

I largely agree with sacky here. KISS strategy. There are a few simple arguments that should be made as bullet points. If people want to read detail, they can, but for the most part it's a simple thing.

1. Ban was designed to reduce drunkenness at games. Instead, it has increased binge drinking.

2. Ban was enacted knowing full-well that it would be unpopular with fans, significantly reduce concessions revenue and likely hurt attendance or at least the number of fans showing up on time / staying for the entire game. Why take those hits if the ban doesn't accomplish its goal?

I signed your petition. You want me to re-post to the Rivals, Scout and 247 Sports boards?

I went ahead and posted on the premium sites.

Get the word out, folks!

If the admin really wanted to keep drunkenness out of the stands then they should allow beer during the game and not allow re-admittance. Yeah, it'd upset a lot of people, but it would cut down on stupid crap. When were students tossed out during the Nubs game in '05? I was at that game when they got kicked out. I think it was the 3rd quarter. Students left and came back super drunk and were given free stuff = national embarrassment.

Signed.

Was this put in place because of the 2005 NU game or was it just a cumulation of prior events and the 2005 NU game was what set the bomb off? As a student, these bans have done absolutely nothing to stop students getting obliterated before, during, and after the games. Lifting the ban, *could*, increase attendance at kickoff as well. All you need to do is take a look around The Hill on gameday to realize this ban has done nothing.

Only 10-20% of the signatures will be officially counted.

We've had this discussion a lot over the years, so there isn't much else to say. There is not a single good reason for them to not serve beer at the games. I've considered stepping up my smuggling game and starting a small business in my section. Don't try and steal this idea. I will find you and hurt you. Stay out of my territory. I will need some employees to cover other parts of the stadium so we can discuss terms if you are interested.

Don't think so - both Washington and Oregon have beer gardens. Granted, they're "outside" the stadium, but they are both in places where you can still watch the game. Was really wishing I was in the UW beer garden at about midway through the 2nd quarter of the game up here this year.

This is what I would want Balch to be used for on gamedays.

Agreed- but man it was a perilous journey to get to the other side of the stadium
