105 players in camp

From CU SID David Plati:

BOULDER, Colo. - University of Colorado football coach Jon Embree officially opened his second fall camp here Sunday by welcoming 105 players, including 31 newcomers to the program for meetings and a team dinner.

Freshmen, walk-ons and several new staffers (graduate assistants, technical interns) had pictures taken Sunday afternoon, with some completing physical examinations and equipment sizing. Among the new faces was T.C. McCartney, who will be an offensive graduate assistant this fall after graduating from Louisiana State in May; he is the grandson of Bill McCartney, the winningest coach in CU football history (compiling a 93-55-5 record from 1982-94).

Embree and his coaching staff, which for only the second in the last 24 seasons at Colorado remains unchanged from the previous year, signed 28 players in last February's recruiting class. Four of those players will be grayshirting, meaning they will delay enrollment at CU in January.

Those four include Peyton Williams, a receiver from South Lake, Texas; he suffered a knee injury (torn ACL) in the state playoffs last December and is still undergoing rehabilitation following surgery. Also grayshirting are Kisima Jagne, a defensive lineman from Phoenix (Chandler); Gerrard Kough, an offensive lineman from Pomona, Calif. (Pomona); and Derek McCartney, a defensive lineman from Westminster (Faith Christian). Kough and McCartney were ticketed for grayshirts from the outset; McCartney is T.C.'s younger brother.

The group included seven recruited walk-ons: Vincent Arvia (OL, 6-0, 285, San Diego/Torrey Pines High School); David Bagby (WR, 6-1, 180, San Diego/Torrey Pines); Trevor Carver (SN, 5-11, 180, Louisville/Monarch); Luke Hartung (OL, 6-6, 230, Danville, Calif./DeLaSalle); Jesse Hiss (FB, 6-1, 225, Bonner Springs, Kan./Bashor-Linwood); Harrison Hunt (WR, 6-0, 180, Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy); and Jordan Murphy (FB, 6-1, 230, Soph., Castle Rock/Denver Lutheran). All are true freshmen except for Murphy, who is transfer from Colorado State who will have to sit out this season per NCAA rules.

The team will begin practices on Monday, first with an early morning walk-through. With CU's second session of summer school in its final week, most of the players will head to classes and will then reconvene in the afternoon for meetings and a 90-minute practice. The same schedule will hold through the week as summer school wraps up. Embree has closed practices to the public and media this year, as with so many new faces and competition at most positions being wide open, he wants to limit as many distractions as possible.

Monday's practice will be the first of 29 practices (walk-throughs do not count) prior to the season opener against Colorado State at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver on Sept. 1. Game time is 2:00 p.m. and it will be televised nationally on FX.

So do we know if he will qualify and be on the team next year or is that still up in the air?

Peyton is a terrific leader and a great player...hope his recovery is successful.

Trevor Carver (SN, 5-11, 180, Louisville/Monarch);

what the hell is a "SN"?

for example....

the guy before him...

David Bagby (WR, 6-1, 180, San Diego/Torrey Pines);

wide receiver. i get that.

the guy after him...

Luke Hartung (OL, 6-6, 230, Danville, Calif./DeLaSalle);

he is an o-lineman.

what the hell is a "SN"?

and i thought i kinda knew football somewhat well.....

Peyton Williams- Bummed to hear about the greyshirt for him, but if the knee isn't ready, then so be it.

Looked for some information on Luke Hartung. Played at De La Salle so he has played at a high level in HS. Link to his MaxPreps site.

Kid is close to the skinniest OL I have ever seen. He does look to be all of 6'5" and has long, long arms. At the same time if he were a basketball player I would say he looks skinny.

You tube highlight reel labelled 2009 but goes up to and includes 2011 action.

Looks like he plays fairly strong, good lateral mobility while able to maintain solid body position, plays with controlled agression on both sides of the ball, looks like he has been well coached.

Biggest problem with him is that he just lacks a huge amount of bulk. At his weight he will get destroyed by PAC level linemen. The he has a long frame and looks like he has some width in the shoulders but the question is can he put on a lot of effective weight. If he can he might turn into something for us.

If he has good hands... May be A huge TE?

Really happy with this news about Jagne. Sucks that he won't be around this year, but hopefully he can take care of business in the classroom and set himself up for success down the road.

Don't think so.

He has good feet for a lineman but doesn't have the speed or burst to be an effective reciever, even assuming he could catch the ball.

Might be a specialist type though as a blocker lined up at TE in short yardage situations. Even then he still needs to add bulk and get stronger.

Jagne getting in at any time is ****ing huge. He could use a year to bulk up (I believe one of the sites asked him what he was benching and he said it was like 250, definitely room for improvement)

Given he's a walk-on, this is the perfect way to go. The kid plays both ways on the line at LaSalle. He seemingly lacks everything but about 50 pounds of muscle. That can happen in a good S&C program. Not a "given", but certainly an odds on favorite.

not surprised about Williams in that he hurt that knee late in the year. Sort of makes the PRich story hard to believe that much more.

Have a feeling he will never redshirt though and it won't matter much. Like Lewis, who greyshirted, but skipped the redshirt.

Very happy that Jagne's officially in the program, but was hoping he'd get a shot this year. Will be interesting to see if we have any good pash rushers on the line other than Chidera. Sorry to state the obvious, but if we don't get pressure on opposing QBs we're in for a long year.

He's not in the program. Technically he hasn't enrolled yet. Furthermore I don't think he's even arrived in Colorado. This is very different from Peyton who showed up this summer and worked out with the team.

so, if he isn't in? might not enroll in January, then does that free up a scholarship for a walk on or a transfer??
It's Monday and I am confused and have lost count of scholly's

We have 5 scholarships unassigned for the 2012 season. Theoretically, we could bring in 5 senior transfers or walk-ons, grant them scholarships, and not have it impact scholarship numbers for 2013. We could even grant a 1-year scholarship to 5 underclassmen walk-ons for 2012 and not have them on scholarship for 2013 without impacting the numbers.

However, with grayshirts included the 2013 class now numbers 17. With 80 scholarships in 2012 and 8 senior graduating there are only 13 slots available for 2013. We need attrition of 4 underclassmen before next year, more if we sign more guys.

I'm curious if this means he is free to sign with anybody else right now.
