Gary Barnett's Practice Observations from Thursday

Glad to have Gary back around the program, and I'm sure any observations/advice he has for Embree and the staff when he pops in will be beneficial.

I'd listen to Gary if I was JE. One Big 12 Championship and four North titles against stronger competition than the PAC-12.

I'm not shocked about Webb but can Webb have better TD to INT ratios than he had at KU?

I think Webb's ratios can improve (and they will if he starts).More experience, and most importantly, he will have a better supporting cast. Can't be understated how atrocious KU was last season. Tough for a QB when you're going up against Oklahoma and Texas with zero supporting cast. We will provide him with a better OL, more of a running threat to take pressure off, and better WR's in time (certainly so if P-Rich returns).

Hmm. Not sure I like the part about players not being ready yet to practice at this level. Guess it's understandable with such a young team.

You dont get to the league and not know how to practice. Embree knows what hes doing, advice from a coach thats done some great things is always helpful.

Funny on the "know how to practice" comments. Embree just yesterday was raving bout how the young guys know how to practice at this level.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Replace CU with this years USC, Oregon, Stanford, Cal or Washington teams and each would have won at least three of those four titles. In 2004 and 2005, USC and Oregon would've been putting 50 or 60 (or 70 ) on every team in the North.

Barnett was talking about the players and I think he is talking more about the mental aspects "heads were swimming". The level of detail is a quantum leap from HS to College.

Barnett said the intensity was good and players were flying around wanting to be part of it and I think that is the same thing that Embree is happy with. We all know that true freshmen are going to take a little time to get the nuances of Div 1 football.

I didnt read it, yes I get its a big leap, I did it myself. Just saying Embree knows what it takes, thats all. Of course heads are gonna be swimming right now, its a different level, you are no longer competing with kids.

i'll always like GB for the most part, but were they practicing at the level of the bloodbath triology week? was that a kevin steels Baylor team we lost to?

heh. just goofin'. at least i didn't make a best Tuesday practice joke.

Gary's practice style is gonna seem pretty old school to today's 19 year old. who knows?

GB was one Iowa St kicker, one piss-poor Mack Brown QB decision and one NU fumble away from being an entirely forgettable HC, sorta like the second coming of Bill Mallory, but without Mallory's verbal discretion! I take everything he says with a huge grain of salt.

Mallory won a share of the Big 8 title. to Barnett's credit, Chris Simms freebie TD's or not, he did win two different BCS conference titles at diff schools...although the NWestern titles were before the advent of the "BCS" proper. power conference, what ever you want to call it. i can't think of anyone else who has done that in the last 20-30 years or so. Urban Meyer may do it though.

Barney has always been a little smug, that's his thing.

I don't recall too many people being happy with Barney at the end. One disastrous coach later and it's easy to think Barney was Mac's second coming.

Oh, and thank you Mack Brown and Chris Simms.

Barnett was a good but not great head coach. He was a very good assistant.

The guy knows football. He knows how to teach the fundamentals and he knows how to work.

His biggest weaknesses are that he isn't great at adapting to changes well. He also was lost when it came down to being a PR guy and a public face on situations that required somone to put up a front to minimize the damage when the press sunk their teeth in.

His personality meant that the probably wasn't going to ever recruit a lot of top blue chip kids but he was very good at developing the talent he had.

Interestingly enough it seems like when Skippy left we got a guy in Barnett who was his polar opposite.

My thoughts on GB are mixed. If I only consider him as a football coach, I give him high marks. He almost always got a win when he had more talent or the talent was close enough to be a coin flip. His failures were pretty much in the areas of recruiting (he hated it and de-emphasized it) and the handling of the media & politics (he had no appetite or skill for it). Based on that, when he is commenting on how a team looks at a practice or how the coaches are managing a practice then I listen. He was one of the best in the biz at those aspects of being a HC.

Mac was one 5th down, one clip, one hail mary, one blocked PAT, and one more loss away in '86 to being just an average coach.

Gary wasn't great, but he was good. I would take Barnett in a heartbeat over Halk and possibly even Embree (thats still up in the air). What killed Barnett was the scandal and his recruiting efforts after.

I think hes a good coach, he took NW to the Rose Bowl for Christ sake. You pull that off, ur good at what u do. He had faults sure, like Nik pointed out. Didnt he call plays in the second ND Orange Bowl? He made some weird ass calls if so, should have won that game easy.

I was ready for Barnett to leave when he was fired. As was previously mentioned, his recruiting sucked; you could see that as the years went by, the caliber of the player kept declining to the point they were getting blown out by 70. And while Chris Brown was a stud, after you call the 32 counter tre for the 37th consecutive time, the other team is gonna catch on (**cough** Fiesta Bowl **cough**)

One thing that GB's teams were, was that they were usually tough & competitive and other teams had to be ready to play them. But I doubt that GB is offering advice to JE unless he's asking GB for his opinion.

As many years as GB was a successful coach I would be surprised if JE doesn't have some questions for him. GB had his failings but he also had some quality success and he knows a lot about fundamental football.
