Rodney Billups Effect

Haven't seen this mentioned, but Rodney has moved from Director of Basketball Operations to an assistant coach. Tad thinks (and I agree) that this is going to help a lot with recruiting.

"Having coach Billups now as an assistant coach on the road recruiting is going to maximize our staff in terms of attracting the best student-athletes to our basketball program." - Tad Boyle

Last summer when assistant Jean Prioleau was recovering from a serious knee injury, the NCAA granted a petition allowing CU to send Billups out recruiting. Being related to CU and NBA legend Chauncey Billups certainly grabbed the attention of most prospects.

But Boyle said Rodney Billups' personality, experience and knowledge of the game is what will make him successful in coaching.

"Rodney is not Chauncey's little brother. That's how we approach it," Boyle said. "The fact that he does have an older brother that is so special to this university and this program and the game of basketball in general certainly is an asset. But Rodney is a good coach, and I think he has a promising future in the business in his own right, no matter what his name is."

Thanks for posting and we talked about it a few weeks ago and had suspicions it might be due to Tom A leaving for another job.

i think coach A's history for top notch networking among the pro's, college and hs circles is second to none. I also think the move of rodney to AC is a great move as he is only a handful of years removed from his playing days at DU and europe and is very close in age to this new generation of ballers.... coach T continues to amaze me w/ all his move on and off the court... also good luck to coach A if indeed he's seeking the HC position and congrats to Rodney on his promotion... go buffs....

I couldn't agree more. Even at the high school level I always felt like I could relate with the younger coaches as opposed to the older guys. Billups is in a perfect position and the players in my opinion will excel with Rodney. Couldn't agree more with the move.

Rodney needs to show that he'll work as hard on the recruiting trail as Coach A. That's a tall order.

agreed... but then remember, coach A has a body of work that stretches decades while rodney is just getting out of the gates...

Coach did yeoman's work with his cellphone since that's what is necessary for his success. Just hope he'll work with Rodney to develop that "Rolodex" and A"s ability to spot talent, ala Dre!

This can only be good. Tad seems to be making all the correct decisions.

Not to pile on to the football team, but we have heard a lot lately coming out about the FB coaches failing to relate to the players. Players today (football or basketball) aren't like players in Embree and EB's day. They have been coddled every step of the way. I think having a guy like Rodney (never mind the fact that he is Chauncey's brother) on staff, somebody who is close to their age, played in college and can relate to them can't be underestimated.

Mind you my analysis here is a lot based on their twitter exchanges, but Coach A and Rodney really seem to relate and be "friends" and can give each other a good natured hard-time. I think that really shows a lot of where these two programs are right now. Embree had to delete his twitter handle while Coach A can be seen telling the mayor to "hit the weight room" or "he better guard this year or he will be getting splinters on the bench"
