Paul Richardson has embarked on an intensified five-week rehab regimen that could return the sophomore receiver to the Colorado lineup before the Buffs get deep into Pac-12 Conference play.

The operative word remains "could." As was the case when he began his recovery from ACL surgery on his left knee in mid-April, there still are no guarantees he will play in the 2012 season.

But at the end of his five-week program - on or about Sept. 16 - Richardson will be reevaluated. That date will mark five months since his ACL surgery, an operation which historically can require six to nine months or longer for full recovery.

I'd hate to see him rush back and re-injure his knee. That said, if we start well and he comes back for most of the Pac-12 schedule that would be a huge boost.

100% chance they play him if he is ready by then. The staff burned multiple player's redshirts for just a couple snaps a game (Asiata, Greer, Creer etc)

i don't care how freakish he is, he should not be coming back from that injury so soon. he ****s it up again, he will not play football ever again. i really appreciate his dedication, but some coach better use his head on this one.

Richardson, in a previous interview, said that he does everything on his toes and is never flat-footed. I would expect that this puts a lot less stress on his knees (concept behind barefoot distance running and why it's better for people than shoes with arch support). That probably has a lot to do with his knee healing more quickly.

One month earlier than normal doesnt sound outlandish. The team could really use him, with a bowl game and much improved (?) recruiting and all those extra practices at stake. But why UCLA, sounds like the plan is to be ready for WSU.

Why do you think that? Many guys tear their ACL multiple times.

I had ACL surgery in '95 and still haven't recovered. I need to trade my two story house in for a ranch.

Yes, and how often do they succeed on the field? Especially at a position that requires a ton of cuts when running routes? and tearing it a second time before it properly heals most assuredly means there'll be some permanent damage that time won't fix.

They may explain why he isn't having any set backs during rehab, but going full speed, potentially off balance from getting rubbed at the line, means it is highly likely he will have to plant with his heal in the first game. He needs to be able to do this with reasonable certainty of no re-injury before getting in to live action.

I had ACL surgery in '95 as well (patellar graft). I was doing weight work after 1 month, running after 2, and fully recovered in 6 months (competitive soccer, skiing, tennis, basketball...whatever). The thing about ACL surgery is that once the bone heals, you really don't have any risk of reinjury...or at least any greater risk than anyone else.

I found that the two hardest things were (in reverse order)

1) getting my atrophied muscles (quad & hamstring) back to normal strength and flexibility, and
2) getting over the injury mentally. When I was back to full speed, I wasn't really at full speed because I was constantly worried I'd would blow it out again.

I'm not worried about PRich getting reinjured because he came back in 6 months. However, I'm skeptical he'll have the mental wherewithal to make hard cuts running routes or escaping defenders. The fact that he's young and "invincible" probably helps with part 2 a bit.

No, just get one of these:

Wrong kind of ranch

Not worth it...this CU team could be awesome in 2013 with a fully healed PRich.

Yes. It seems like the bulk of our team will be returning next year. We obviously lose Polk, Major, Pericak & Rippy, but I think we're well positioned with the DL & DBs we brought in this past year. Greer, Daigh, Washington, etc. should fill the gaps at LB nicely. Hopefully we finish the 2013 class with at least a handful of difference makers that can plug some holes in the 2 deep. The 2013 team should be experienced & talented.

If he pushes it this year, then I imagine we'll see his level of play mirror what we saw in the 2nd half of last season. He'll be more of a decoy, but unable to really make plays. That said, it certainly opened things up for Clemons so I'm sure he'd still have a positive impact compared to guys like Ebner, Darden and Spruce.

But won't that just make his knees hurt worse?

that might explain why he hasn't recovered from a 1995 knee surgery

edit: I assumed it was the year 1995, but DBT said it was the year 95. Those dinosaur bone grafts just aren't that great.
