Great behind the scenes article on the Pac 12 network

Worth the time to read it. I don't know if we fully appreciate how huge this is. The Pac-12 Networks completely changes the landscape of college athletics. Follow the money. There's a good chance we'll see a day sometime soon when 12 of the 20 richest ADs are from our conference.

Very impressive stuff indeed.

What has came to mind of late is the six regional channels. Suppose I'm an USC fan watching the Los Angeles network, I get to watch programming of not only USC but UCLA. My big question is how will that enhance the crosstown rivalry between those two schools? Will the Pac-12 regional networks foster more talk about those schools in their respective regions? Would the USC fan learn any new stuff about UCLA that the USC fan never knew about UCLA?

I'm very curious to see how the Pac-12 handles the Mountain channel between the Buffs and Utes. Will the Mountain network be different from the five other regional networks because CU and Utah's long lost rivalry is in the process of being revived at this point? Will the Pac-12 Network try to incite both fanbases against each other in each region? Suppose Coach Sark of the Huskies says something imflammatory about the school in Pullman, how much will the Washington network take note of it?

Spencer Hall from Yahoo Sports (the EDSBS blogger) also dropped an article today on the network.

Less detail but several similar quotes and emphasis. One interesting nugget is that one of the big reasons the cable networks pitched the multiple regional networks model is their ability to then sell highly targeted local ads at higher prices. I don't doubt that was a big deal for them, particularly given the market penetration rates and viewing numbers of live sporting events in local markets.

Also, the Texas guys are going to go nuts if we announce DirectTV and they still can't watch LHN on anything other then Grande and Fios. They are already pissed about getting PacNet on Time Warner in Dallas before getting LHN.

Great read and info I had not seen before. The speed with which they built the Network and the amount of foresight is amazing. This will be the model which will be used a measuring stick for success in the future.
