When does the QB controversy begin?

I recall JE accidentally saying QB "controversy" then correcting himself with QB "competition" during one of his post practice interviews. Just a matter of time.

Especially if the O line sucks like this and he is pressured all the time...we'll need someone more physical to take the pounding our O line will give him.

How can there be a controversy? Only one QB has played.

If Wood had come into the game in the 2nd half against CSU and rallied the Buffs to a win - THEN there might be a controversy.

Controversy? Hell when is wood going to play due to a webb injury? The online needs to protect the quarterback. The coaches didn't adjust to the a-gap blitz by leaving in a fb or hb and sending a the down the seam or having a we cross. This is really basic stuff guys.

Question of others on Webb's play. My impression from the stands was that his accuracy took a nose dive as soon as he left the pocket, regardless of whether the play was a set role-out or a scramble. Anyone else have the same impression? Was that something that was also an issue seen in Kansas? Sorry if I missed similar posts - there are a lot of expected long and angry threads after Sat's game not sure I can take going down all those roads just to check.

I noticed that too. And with this pathetic O line, we need a QB who can make plays outside of the pocket and can take multiple hits. I don't think Webb is that guy. If the O line were competent, that's a different story...

Yeah, not real accurate on the run, but it's hard to say whether the hits he was taking contributed to that.

Webb is going to have to be knocked out of the game if Saturday is any indication. I have a hard time believing that Wood could not have done better than a hobbled Webb. I would have liked to see him get a shot, anyway.

So the purported knock on Wood is that even though he's far: bigger, stronger, faster, and can throw more balls that Webb; when the pressure comes he gets incredibly flustered - cant hit the broad side of a barn and turns the ball over all the time.

You want that guy behind our Oline?

Here are my problems right now

1. Webb should have never been named the starter from the get go. He has been here for what 2 months? Wood has worked his tail off for an entire year. You can't tell me that there is that much difference in terms of knowledge of the playbook. I questioned the decision to start Webb at first, but gave the coaches the benefit of the doubt. Now, Game experience is the biggest difference between the two IMO, and most of the rest of our starters lack that. Not only did this put doubt into most of the fanbase, but I think the team lost some respect for the staff with this decision.

2. Webb was a loser at Kansas and got pounded. He is not a big QB, he didn't do great at Kansas. I see a worse version of Cody Hawkins. He looked decent and efficient when healthy, but nothing mind blowing. If the O-line continues to play like they did, he wont make it to conference play anyway.

3. I think it was complete BS to keep a gimpy Webb in the game. That puts further risk of injury on him, and shows the lack of confidence in Wood.

Not sure that's true. But if so he can tuck and run. Who knows? This O line throws everything into question.

The line sucks, so better to have a bigger QB in there that can take a little more pounding and can tuck and run. Webb is going to get destroyed at this rate.

What if instead standing tall he throws picks?

We need to get Wood some reps this weekend if we build a good lead, but the coaches emphatically think Webb is the best option to start. I will not disagree for now.

+1. Although I still think keeping webb in when he was noodle arming throws was a bad idea.

I agree if we can get up a decent amount lets put Wood in and get him some game experience.

Be the same as Webb giving the ball up by fumbling, just not as great field position for the opposition. I think whoever you put back there, we are still going to suck with our O-line and coaching. However, my biggest issues are how they handled Webb by giving him the starting job after 2 months and how they kept him in injured enough to affect his play.

Sooner or later Webb is going to start throwing picks. Without a running game he'll be getting a lot of attemts. If his accuracy is what it was on Saturday, and our slow receivers can't get great seperation, they'll be a lot of picks.

Just for the record, I'm not calling for Wood.

I think most of us watched the tape of him at Kansas and he made decent throws while on the run. I think it all had to do with not being able to put pressure on his leg. He could not plant causing him to under throw his throws while on the run. I found him to be effective when he was healthy but when he wasn't boy was it ugly.

You could be right, I don't know. I do know that Webb was completely ineffective after he got hurt, although the OL was a HUGE part of the problem there. Having a threat of a running QB when you get blitzed all day long would have been nice.

How would a different QB really help behind this line?

In all honesty, it probably would not have mattered. It did show the staff's lack of faith in Wood that a gimpy Webb was left in the game, though.

It really makes one concerned about how the coaches view a lot of positions. Based on who saw time in this one game, the coaches are implying they have no real depth at QB, OL or RB. Which is of real concern considering the starters at those positions appear questionable.

There will be no controversy once Webb gets hurt. Unfortunately he gets no protection and seems to like lowering his shoulder.

That is, unless the controversy is Hirschman vs Wood

I think there should be an o/line coach controversy before there is a qb controversy. The qb controversy needs to get back in line and wait it's turn.
