I an effort to continue to improve AllBuffs and increase the amount of content that we have available to members each week we are adding and official staff writer, Michael Krumholtz. Michael comes to us after covering the Buffs for the CU Independent and will be writing several articles a week for the site during football and basketball season. Michael will also be showing up at tailgates and games and covering them from more of a social media roving reporter stand point so some or all of you should expect to meet him over the course of the year. Anyway without further adue – a quick intro interview:
AB: First off welcome to the site and thank you agree to join us as our staff writer, tell us a little bit about yourself, where you are from and what got you interested in writing?
MK: I was born in Dayton, OH and like many other Ohioans I itched to get out of the state. Really though, Ohio is enmeshed in a tradition of birthing aviation and the large majority of astronauts who have been to space (Seriously, look up the stats, Ohio has had 25 astronauts). I guess this home-state phenomenon kind of doubles to explain why I've always wanted to write: because writing can take people places they never knew their imagination could fly to. My favorite writers, like Pynchon, Wallace, Ginsberg, and Marquez, all have this ability to take me somewhere that I haven't even mustered up in dreams.
AB: How has your time in Boulder been so far?
MK: This is my fourth and final year at CU and I'm just trying to make the most of my final year. It's already going by too fast. The fear is sinking in.
AB: As mentioned that you previously covered the Buffs for the CU Independent - got any good stories you can share with us from that experience? or anything the casual fan doesn't see/realize about the Coach/writer interactions?
MK: During my time as a reporter and eventually the sports editor at CU Independent I learned a good amount about the profession. When I was a freshman I had no idea where to go or that I even had to ask a representative (the SIDs) to talk with the players. Probably my best experience during that time was road-tripping back to Ohio with my buddy for the Ohio State game and being on the 50-yard sidelines while the band dotted the "i". It was unreal considering it was my first time ever being in the Horseshoe (I grew up as a Florida State fan).
AB: Any favorite coaches to interview/work with on the respective staffs?
MK: Of all time my favorite coaches that I've ever talked to were former receivers coach Robert Prince, just because he was a down-to-earth guy with old man's swagger and Georgia head coach Mark Richt because I grew up rooting for his offenses in Tallahassee and he's a very nice guy. Currently, I like hearing what Embree has to say because he's usually angry and always good for a few laughs.
AB: Building on that how do you see new media interacting with what you do an journalism in general? where do you think that interaction could be better leveraged?
MK: I'm on twitter (@Dr_KrumholtzMD) and love to send out little snippets from practice or games. Sometimes they are useful, and never are they funny.
AB: Finally as we embark on this project is there anything you'd like to convey to our members?
MK: I hope that Buffs fans follow my articles and send me nasty hate mail whenever they can. Honestly though I love hearing feedback from readers and if you have time, don't be afraid to tweet my way or shoot me an email with words you wouldn't want your children to hear you say.
