What the CU administration can do.

If I had the power to do something about the football program, here is what I would do:

Barring a miraculous turn of events in the next couple of weeks, I would quietly notify Mike Bohn and Jon Embree that we appreciate all they have done for the University, but we are going to be going in a new direction by the end of the season at the latest.

1. I would announce Mike Bohn's "resignation" no later than halfway through the football season.

2. If CU continues this free fall where the games are so non competitive that they are over in the first quarter, I would likely announce Embree's dismissal at about the same time, and name Cabral as the interim HC for the remainder of the season. I would also announce that the administration will be making a strong financial commitment to bringing in a new AD and football coaching staff that will be as good as any out there.

3. I bring in resources to assist in hiring a top notch AD candidate who has a track record of growing athletic departments thanks to great coaching hires and marketing. I assure these candidates (in writing if need be), that the University is committed financially to turning around around the football program, while continuing to build upon a blossoming basketball program.

4. I allow the AD to conduct the coaching search with the knowledge that they can assure the new HC candidates that there will be substantial facility upgrades announced concurrently with their hiring, so that they know that the administration will be behind them. I also let the new AD know that the University will adhere to a policy similar to the other Pac 12 institutions with respect to admissions for scholarship athletes.

I know a lot of this sounds like wishful thinking, but I have to think that even Bruce Benson has to know that this is beyond terrible, and cannot be fixed with a bandaid. I'm also trying to channel my disgust into productive thinking instead of continued bashing of everybody associated with CU. I'd be interested to see what some of you would include in your road map to recovery. I will be writing to my elected regent to voice my displeasure of the state of our football program, and let them know in no uncertain terms that this is unacceptable. I recommend that everybody here do the same.

Mike Bohn is responsible for more than the football program. I would be shocked if they fired him right now, while he is in the middle of a facilities project.

I know we have been suffering through 6+ seasons of crappy football play and we on this board have had more than our fill of it but for the Administration and the Regents they obviously haven't since they allow this to continue year after year.

To me the more important question is: What needs to happen for the Admin and Regents to wake up and take real action to fix the football program? What would make them decide to commit to changes that would produce a winner on the football field?

We love football and hate that we suck every saturday but I don't think shame on the field speaks loudly to the Regents and Admin. The only thing I can think of that would make the Regents sit up and pay attention is money. $$$$$ dolla bills baby$$$.

So how much money would CU have to lose for them to feel the urge to really fix things? I don't think half full stadiums is enough. They won't like it but it would hardly be a blip on their financial radar. I'm thinking it's going to take something big like getting kicked out of the PAC12 and losing out on all that TV money (tens and tens of millions) before the Regents will wake up. If that's the case, we will have to suffer even more - like 3+ more seasons - before things get better.

(I just re-read this post and wow that's depressing. Please hide the razor blades)

They can all resign and give us people who don't make our university the laughingstock of college athletics. Even before this recent disastrous downturn in football, here in Virginia, as distant from media coverage of CU as you can get in this country, I've had multiple people come up to me and remark that "CU is the worst run athletic department in the country, hands down". We are a ****ing joke.

What the admin can do:
1. Keep Bohn...he's not the problem.
2. Keep Embree, but force coaching realignment or changes.
3. Announce the admin will assign more admission exemptions to the football program to make it easier to get better athletes in here.
4. Announce a big facilities upgrade.

All these are within the admin's/AD's power and can be done quickly, or are already planned (#4).

The money is important, Even if it isn't a significant percentage when you start talking millions of dollars then people pay attention.

The bigger money is when significant donors start saying they aren't giving money to the medical center, the academic departments, the endowment funds, etc. because they are embarassed to be associated with a public laughingstock.

We need enough people to make the administration aware of their displeasure enough times that they start to realize that athletics, especially football is the point of the public image of the university on a day to day basis and that that image impacts the entire university.

I think this could have been possible two weeks ago. Losing to an FCS then getting blown off the field giving up almost 70 points and all their dignity have changed that.

None the less if they did your plan, fire Marshall and Brookhart this week, it might give them a chance to turn the ship a little. Some hope is better than no hope.

The two things I would address in this is that the financial blip on the radar can go both ways. Increasing the financial commitment to the football program would also be pretty small in the big picture, especially when it could likely end up paying for itself and then some. Second, is that CU football has always been, and will always be the most talked about part of the University. There is no way that anybody from any level of administration will be able to hide from this. If anything, even if I didn't care about football as an administrator, I would take action just to get people to get off my back.

Jesus you guys are wing nuts! "The bigger money is when significant donors start saying they aren't giving money to the medical center, the academic departments, the endowment funds" So you're not going to donate money to a medical facility to help educate future front range Physicians or donate funds to help educate the work force of tomorrow at your institution because the football team is bad?! Get a life you sound like a child. Football is cool but I am not about to neglect my Schools academic reputation to further it.

This isnt the Ivy league. You went to a state school ,just like me. I will not give another penny until the administration convinces me that they understand how important a football team is to a University. Quite frankly, the University hasnt done much for me since I graduated, and the football team is the only tie I have. I would rather invest in the local University, and affect my local economy if football doesnt play into it.

Can't say I blame you.

Might be a good idea to send copies of the checks to the regents and the admin with a note stating that if they had their head pulled out the checks would say CU instead of your local university.

Yeah we should definitely strive to be exactly like Boise State. I know what you're saying but I guess I just disagree. Of course I want to see the football team do well but at the end of the day CU is an academic institution and not NFL Jr.. If you choose not to attend football games that is your right and understandable but to make the leap from that to not wanting anyone to donate to academia and medical facilities is a bit obsessive.

Colorado football has been part of the University since 1890. It is part of the cultural fabric of the university. The football program has been around a lot longer than the NFL. You can call it NFL JR if you so choose. You can pretend that CU football isn't important. But don't tell anyone on this board that football and academics aren't interwoven into the core of what makes this university special.

If you think this is about being like Boise State you are an idiot or just completely out of touch.

What it is about is being more like a Stanford, Northwestern, Michigan, or a host of other universities that are seen as being excellent academic institutions, superior to CU, that have quality athletic programs as a part of their cultures and as a part of their public image.

The willingness to accept failure, to accept being second class, to cut corners that do not need to be cut are indicative of a more general willingness to accept being less than what you can and should be and this extends well beyond athletics.

Successfull organizations are organizations that strive to excell in all aspects of their operations. I don't want to speak for FatBuff but he is a man who has seen plenty of organizations and is not unable to distinguish those that are likely to be successful from those that won't be. He has every right and you could argue the responsibility to direct his hard earned money to where it will be most productive and do the most good.

i dont care what other people want to do with their money. I care what I do with my money, and I refuse to invest it into a rathole, or something that doesnt provide a benefit to me. DiSteffano has been here too long, and is too comfortable. I dont agree with the pursuit of CU becoming a research focused University. It should be a school that educates Colorado students that are a cut above the rest of the state's students. I noticed that enrollment was down in Boulder by almost 2%, I wonder how much of that is associated with the decline of the football team? I do know that the validictorian of my highschool chose to go to OU because of Switzer's team.

I'm convinced that Bohn should be fired and a new AD hired. The new AD, then, can assess the state of football and make a decision. What I have little confidence in, under this scenario, is that BenDeStef can make a good AD hire.

I was sort of expecting that I read something like "Colorado fires __________" or at least "Colorado appointed _______ as the new ________ coach" today but seems just a quiet Sunday.

only in our dreams would this school care enough to have the balls to make a headline like that.... they have killed a once proud program and there's currently no hope of being resurrected. it's dead Jim.

Gee and Tressel reunited at CU...can you imagine.

At least if the admin isn't supporting football properly, Tressel could just fire Gee.
Funny, but can't be serious. Gee would never leave a job like OSU for CU...but Gee-Tressel at CU would be epic...

Yes! with Gee the football team had 2 players per year that did not have to worry about grades like today! the snobs that run C.U. today are holding back the poor black man with so so grades.
