Today I made the call to cancel DirecTV

I gave them enough time to get their act together. Frankly, if Dish is going to carry the Pac 12, there's no reason for DirecTV not to. Yet, here we are, and there still is no agreement. So, I guess I'm going to see how bad Comcast really does suck.

DirecTV needs to have a lot of people cancel service before they'll cave, but today they lost a customer that they've had for 11+ years. On top of that, Century Link lost a client due to DirecTV's actions. Century Link can't be too happy about that.

you are a brave man...I can not get the nuts to cancel 17 years of service for what I think is the best tv provider?? I am really wishing pac12 vs dtv will get this worked out. Not a fan of Comcast/Infinity, other than the Pac12 channel

If Comcast screws it up, I'll have plenty of opportunity to switch back in a couple of years. By then, DTV will have the P12 networks.

Funny thing was the guy was trying to tell me that DirecTV offered to broadcast specific games that you could subscribe to and Pac 12 net told them to stick it. I don't blame them. Broadcast the network, don't pick and choose. He then tried to tell me that I'd be paying more, to which I responded that I'll actually be paying about $50 less per month. sigh. It was good knowing you, DTV.

I was a former comcast hater but I really think they are trying to improve their reputation. They now call me once a year to ensure I am getting the best deal for my TV watching habits.

I went from Dish to Comcast a while ago. I really don't see anything wrong with Comcast. They keep adding more HD channels. The internet is good. Customer service has been adequate. I really am not sure why everyone hates Comcast.

This is good to hear. I freaking HATED Comcast 11 years ago when I switched to DTV. DTV has been pretty decent to work with, but it's good to hear that Comcast has their act together. I'm also looking forward to the increased download speeds. I've heard that's pretty incredible.

Sacky,

What was the penalty? I'm considering a similar move.

No penalty, as I'm well beyond the two year upgrade window. I did have to pay $120 for the install, though. The savings will more than make up for that after about 3 months.

I moved about 18 months ago and was considering switching from comcast to satellite. Unfortunately, the way my new house is situated, it's not possible to get a good signal. The previous owner spent a lot of time and effort trying to get it to work.

So, I'm stuck with comcast. They do slowly jack the rates up and it kind of sucks. You call them and threaten to leave and they will give you a break but I hate doing that. As far as service goes, I have been happy. They have a lot of stuff in their On Demand library now and much of it is in HD. Quite a bit of it is no extra charge or included if you get the associated premium channel.

have they not called you or sent you letters? My bill has actually gone down the last two years and I have power boost or whatever it's called that makes your internet super fast.

Yes, the On Demand feature is used all the time in my house. Not sure if the Dish services have something like that but it is a great feature. Tons of content.

DVR's have improved some too, adding storage space and some other cool features.

No need to pay a fee for early cancelation. Just get Sacky's user id and pword and stream via Comcast. That's what we're doing via my mil.

My Comcast has been solid for a while. Great internet, good TV, and my price is pretty darn cheap. Dply is correct that they try to get you a good deal. Plus you can call and they will usually get you a decent upgrade or discount.

They do not do that here. I wonder if they had to do that in regions where they were having serious pr issues.

I switched to DirectTV & Centurylink from Comcast 4 months ago and it has to be one of the worst decisions I have ever made. Each one of them individually may be ok but bundling is horrible. I have had to call one of them if not both every single month because of a billing error or misquote. They do not communicate with each other and just point the finger when something is wrong. Most of the time Centurylink has stepped up to fix the problem, DirectTV just tells me it isn't there problem, yet it is their representatives that cause the problems.

Almost wanted to make a post stating that DTV just announced a deal this afternoon with the Pac12 Network but I figured that this season has been rough enough already.

What is the early cancellation fee for DirectTV? I am a long-time subscriber but have difficulty with it here in AK since everytime we get a windstorm on the hillside in Anchorage, my damn dish gets blown. 4X in the last 3 weeks. It was only luck that I got the CU game this week on FX. I did not get the NFL games this weekend.

Comcast has good service and good product, it's just really expensive.

The letter we got in the mail describing our free NFL ticket in lieu of Pac 12 said $10 per remaining month of the contract. Not bad imo.

We will be moving again in May. If Directv hasn't gotten the Pac at that point, we will be switching to Comcast at the new house. We will also only have 3 months remaining on our contract (maybe 4 depending on if they pro-rate).

I was a Dish subscriber for about 8 years until 2 or 3 years ago. My DVR died and they actually wanted to charge me $70 or $80 bucks for a service visit to fix a problem with equipment that I was leasing. I said wave the fee or I'm canceling. They jerk talked to said okay! I decided to cut the cord and live with just over the air, Netflix and Hulu Plus. I bought a Mac Mini with EyeTV to use as a DVR. With the state of our football program, I felt that I could live without cable. I did miss watching the Nuggets, though.

With the advent of the Pac-12 Network I decided it was time to get cable again. Comcast sent a mailer so I decided to give them a shot. I have no complaints with the picture quality. It looks just as good as Dish on my 58" plasma. The on demand content is nice. However, the DVR is not even close to as good as the Dish DVR. It gets the job done, but the interface was much better on Dish. Not sure how the DirecTV DVRs compare. I can elaborate if anyone wants me to.

My son moved into an apartment building that only has DirecTV through Century Link. He called to get service. Because he'd made a couple of recent purchases, his credit rating wasn't high enough, so they told him it would take a $300 "refundable" deposit. However, the "refund" is in the form of a $5 per month programming credit. So, basically, it is a $300 non-refundable charge. Since it is the only TV option other than rabbit ears, I call it "usery." I called on his behalf and railed on them, but they would not relent. I've been a DireTV customer for, oh, 15 years at least. It really, really pissed me off. I've been seriously considering the change as well.

I do not have the Comcast option. So, if I did switch, it would have to be Dish or Intermountain Cable.

Sacky- Why did you not go the Dish Network route ? Was it the internet & now getting
highspeed through Comcast ? Did Comcast get you any good deals to sign up?
Free movies ? low bill for 12 months ?

I got what I consider to be a pretty solid deal for 12 months: $115/Mo for TV, internet and phone, complete with wifi transmitter and DVR and the Pac 12 networks. I have unlimited voice and national long distance. I never call internationally, so that's not a big deal. I considered dropping the phone service altogether, but we've had the same phone number for 20 years and I've grown accustomed to it. I know a lot of people hate the bundling stuff, but I like it. Paying one bill instead of three is nice. I also have Red Zone and all the Fox sports channels. I'm happy with the deal, now it's just a matter of the service. We'll see how that works out. I'm excited to get the P12 network, though. It'll be cool to get that through my iPad when I'm not at home.

Bundling is great. Provided that the bundle is provided and serviced through a SINGLE company. I had the Qwest/DirecTV bundle back in the day and it was HORRIBLE and ended up costing me a ton of money that it shouldn't have. Comcast bundling is great because they control everything so they can't pass the buck. I've actually had really good luck with Comcast over the past 5 years. As a general rule, I've found that the more separate entities involved in a bundle, the more certain it is to be a complete clusterfluff.

I have had Dish for years and am very happy with them. I compared prices and in my mind get a much better deal for the money with Dish. That said I was considering dropping them until out of the blue they picked up the PAC12 network.

If anyone wants to switch to them PM me and I will send you a card that gets both of us a nice discount.

I cut cable six months ago and stream in 1080i hd through Xbox and Roku. Cable is a massive rip off.

$85/month for essentially basic service x 5 years = $5,100. That adds up into real money.

Completely Agree! Dealing with service issues at Centurylink per the "Bundle" was an experience I am not going to miss! Switched to Comcast and very impressed so far. Faster Int, great content and of course the PAC 12.

Fine and dandy if you don't want sports.
