Our offensive problems in a nutshell.... Ringo nails it

I think this is the source of a great deal of our problems. We got 9 guys in the box to deal with. Nobody respecting the WR's to beat them deep. No need to have 1 safety back, never mind 2. Bring the blitz just about every play.

The best evidence I see of this is the lack of screen plays. Same staff as last year. Tony Jones ran it fine last year. No reason to believe that Webb can't execute this play. Marshall didn't forget how to coach this play.

It's numbers man. We got 8-9 guys to deal with in the box. We got no Toney Clemons or PRich who defenses had to respect at all times.

Marshall can't deal with those numbers. I don't think our OLine has a fair fight.

We lost our top 3 pass catchers. This was ALWAYS the biggest concern.

We have ZERO WR threats. All the white dudes are nice possession "slot-type" receivers. Any one of them can be in the game and they are doing a great job WITHIN context of what should be expected.

It doesn't matter who I'm watching, whether it's Fresno State, UNLV or WSU or whoever. They all got 3-4 big fast dudes catching the ball in space and making plays. Even once in awhile would allow things like draws and screens to work and keep guys honest.

We look a lot like Penn State. No speed on either side of the ball. Their Head Coach was the offensive coordinator for the NE Patriots last year, and they are completely neutralized without threats.

So if that is the case, and I'm not saying it isn't, is there hope for next year? P-Rich back, J-Thomas back (?). But we still need an upgrade at QB. Webb has not shown any ability to get the ball down the field. I hope Dillon or the new Freshman can do it, although I have been impressed with Hirschman's arm.

The quickest way to building a winner in the college game is to have a QB who is a difference maker. Do we think we have that on roster, or with Sefo?

Like Ringo mentions, Gerald Thomas is the guy we've got right now with the athleticism to change that. If they can get him into the passing game more, rather than having to get him the ball on reverses and screens, that could help with the problem.

I think you are half right. We don't have a guy who scares defenses and forces them to play honest, nobody who forces an 8+ yard cushion. We don't have the guy who forces the defense to move a safety over and out of the box also opening holes for those possesion type recievers sit down in. PRich would help a bunch on this issue.

At the same time I do blame Marshall for a huge amount. Our pass protection has been a joke, even against straight 3-4 man rushes. Teams have been able to get pressure on the passer without committing extra guys to the rush meaning that Webb has been not only hurried but trying to throw against full zones. A bigger issue is that our run blocking has been a joke. ToJo and Powell have made some great runs just to get back to the LOS, rarely have they had much push to work with. As a result the offense has be in lots of second and third and longs where the run wasn't an issue. Even on first down the safeties can play more pass.

Start getting some 2nd and 3's or 3rd and 2's and you will suddenly see our slow WRs much more open down the field. Everything starts and ends with the OL. The OL was supposed to be our strongest position on the team. It was where we had pro prospect LT and a pre-season honors mention at C, instead it has been dominated by MWC and FCS teams.

No question that we need more explosion at WR. It would be great to get GT open downfield for some big scores and to open space for Spruce and McC but unless Webb has time and space it isn't going to help.

We do not have difference makers on offense. UCLA stacked the LOS. We don't have the line to give the QB time for our slow WR's to get open. We don't have a QB who can buy time. We don't have receivers who can blow by anyone. We don't have a running back who can break one up the middle. We don't have an OC who can be imaginative enough to scheme the other team.

What do we have? A smart QB. A bruiser FB. A fast RB who can't break a tackle but, if he gets open, is trouble, a TE with huge potential and a porous line. What do we do? I have some thoughts. What about you guys?

Well, what if Embree and EB are on to playmakers and then get canned? Back to square one. That's our issue. We need continuity.

We've been pretty consistently bad for a while, not sure that's our problem. And losing out on current recruiting targets is the least of my worries.

Continuity with a staff that is in over their heads and isn't recruiting well is actually the worst thing that could happen.

GT, Henderson, Powell, Dillon, Crawley, Asiata, Mustoe, Nembot, + some potential talent in the current class with guys like Ross, Liufau etc. I don't think recruiting will prove to be this coaching staff's downfall

Well the majority of the 2013 class sure isn't helping. A few good players but most are meh at best

I dont pretend to be able to evaluate talent...I think this staff is good at it, so I wont criticize the 2013 class until its done and those guys play. That being said, the WR recruiting is disappointing for me so far

Honestly, it's been years since we have had a true deep threat. Clemons got deep at times last year, we haven't had a burner in awhile. GT has to be involved, even in the running game. The dude can run, get him the damn ball.

I was thinking Palma, for one. Parsons, who is waffling, for another I am not a recruiting geek.

The fact that it's early October and we have zero shot at any remaining 4*'s (or even high 3*'s) on offense, tells you all you need to know...

There no playmakers other than gerald thomas who doesn't get the ball anywhere near as much as he should.

2013 class is a hawkins class so far, period.

If you can't coach you had damn well better be able to recruit.

At the present time, this staff is doing NEITHER.

At least Zook was able to recruit in his early years at Illinois.

Shows how far we've fallen.

The staff desperately needed to bring in some WR talent in their first year, as the cupboard was bare. They wiffed by getting Spruce, McCullough and Vincent. They REALLY needed to get speedy types in here (at least 2 if not 4 guys). Yes Vincent is gone, but attrition happens. Get numbers.

Last year we got 3 and we should have gotten more given one guy was sure to grayshirt and not contributed after blowing his ACL late in the HS season.

G. Thomas is the only guy we have right now that is electric, but as Syko points out, we can't seem to get the ball to him other than via handoff and screens.

WHY is that? The coaches are dumb?

I watched GT on about 8 pass plays when he was in there. He may be fast, but he is NEVER open the way Spruce is. So, I question his route-running. However, with that said, how about we put in those PICK plays the other schools run all day long? Design some pick plays to rub off the man coverage and allow this guy to get 1 vs 1 in some space. If we don't figure out a way to get him in space, we are playing into the defenses hands.

As for the OP, I probably should have stated this is a big part of the problem, but obviously, it's not the only problem. But I do believe that PERSONNEL is a bigger problem than the position coaching. Gus Malzahn would be putting up 30 points a game with this personnel.
