Interesting Article

You can make an argument top to bottom against the SEC, it has some teams that seem to have accepted being well paid whipping boys, but it is hard to argue that the SEC has had the best team and more of the best teams than any other conference in recent years. This isn't hard to explain considering that the league has a number schools that put huge resources into football and they happen to sit in the middle of a recruiting area that produces huge numbers of talented players, most of whom stay close to home to play their college football.

At the same time you don't have to accept that just because this is the situation over the past few years that it will be this way forever. It wasn't that long ago that the Big8/12 was the dominant league with multiple NCs and multiple teams year after year in the top 5 and top 10.

It isn't that hard to imagine the PAC taking the title. USC certainly recuits well enough, Oregon has been a perenial top 10 program recently as has Stanford. Washington has the support and history to look at them as contenders and if CU can get its act together administratively we all know what can happen in Boulder.

It wouldn't be shocking to see the B1G come back into the picture as well. tOSU, Mich, kNU, MSU, UW, and others are all programs that have the conditions present to rise to the top. The B1G does have the drawback in the move upward in that the concentration of HS talent in the region isn't what it used to be comparitavely and kids from warm weather states seem less inclined to go into the midwest but that doesn't mean it will never change.

Bottom line, these things go in cycles. Let's see where the cycle takes us next.

that's an oxymoron

I think perhaps Oregon is the only team out there this year, from another conference, that would have even a chance of winning the SEC. And I only give them a slight chance because we have seen what teams like LSU and Alabama do to the spread offenses.

USC: No. Same statement happens every year. USC would be playing for/winning the NC if only they hadn't lost. (Pete is no longer there so the whole 'they beat SEC teams' doesn't work as well)
WVU: No. Same boat as Oregon and not as talented.
Ohio State: No
ND: Let's throw them in b/c they are undefeated right now. No.

If we assume that Alabama is the top dog in the SEC lets look at the other teams:

South Carolina
Florida
LSU
Georgia

All four would be at the top of any of the other major conferences.

I agree with the cycles but right now this cycle belongs to the SEC.

Did you read the article? What you just wrote is exactly what perpetuates the idea that the SEC is far and away the best conference. Look at Alabama as an example. I agree that they may be the best team in the country this year but there biggest win is against Michigan. Michigan is 3-2 and looks average at best, but to keep Alabama's big win looking big, Michigan is somehow still in the top 25 while a team like Iowa State (4-1) with a win over TCU is not. I am not saying the SEC isn't a great conference, they obviously are. My point, and the articles, is that the current BCS system and other factors are set-up to make them more successful than other conferences.

Didn't this same thing go on with ND for years? Always in the top 25 even with 3/4 losses...Remember those days? Media would just say look at their schedule

And I agree with the above post, everything is on a cycle, including our women. One day CU will "cycle" back around...I just hope I am alive to witness and enjoy??

Yes I read the article and it is wrong. Just because someone wrote it doesn't make it true.

Michigan was a Top 10/15 team when the season started and then 'Bama beats up on them and then people want to use the logic 'well Michigan isn't that good'. And I don't buy the Michigan is in the Top 25 to make Alabama look good. I am not sure why Michigan is in the Top 25 but I don't think Alabama needs the assistance. Beating LSU and either Florida or South Carolina in the title game would ensure that they are in the BCS championship.

I think conferences are only as good as the teams that are not on top. When you consider that Tenn. could beat any team in the Pac outside of Oregon and Tenn. is not at the top of the conference.....that is a strong conference.

Tennessee would struggle against most PAC-12 teams.

Disagree they would fit in perfectly. They score points and they don't play defense.

And by most you are implying that more then half. I cannot find 7,8, 9 teams I would bet money on if they were playing UT.

I can. Every team except Cal, Utah, CU, and Wazzu.

1 guy uses subjective pre-season rankings and the transitive property to justify his position.

The article uses results.

I think we all know which one to trust.

Florida, whose best OOC win is Bowling Green? USCe, whose best OOC win is East Carolina? Or LSU, whose best OOC win stacks up similarly to Oregon's best win, although UW had to travel about 2,000 more miles to play LSU?

The point of the article was: if the SEC gets so much early momentum from the pre-season polls, then it's impossible for other conferences to catch up. It's similar to RPI in college basketball. It's critical for teams to go out and establish good RPI before they get into conference games, because RPI will perpetuate throughout the conference schedule no matter who wins.

It's exactly why there should be NO polls, human or computer, released before week 5-6 of the season.

I agree with the general premise of the article, but I also think, for example, South Carolina is REALLY Good this year. I prefer the eye test. I watch, and then decide yes that team is good. Bama is the best team in the country, South Carolina is right up there, and the SEC is still overrated.

Agree with the eye test.

I am actually going to the UF/USC game. Hopefully USC beats LSU this week as that will setup a wild one in Gainesville,

I do truly believe the SEC is the best conference for probably the past few years, but this is exactly what the article pointed out. We have been hearing how great the SEC is for the better part of a decade. So the whole time the hype machine has been churning and pushing SEC teams higher in the rankings and made them more visible to recruits on the tv screens. Now a few years later, the formula they built has worked out perfectly. Nobody cares if they start the season playing Towson or Idaho because they say that later they are going to have a tough time against South Carolina who has been busy playing UAB and East Carolina and Florida who are up against Bowling Green. How many non-SEC BCS schools will the entire SEC play this year?

Just going off of memory here:

LSU - UW
Tenn - NC State
UF - Florida State
Bama - Michigan

I am sure there are probably more and not sure how that stacks up against other conferences. I would assume that most conferences average a little under one extra BCS team per conference member?
