Who is your regent?

Take a look.... they even have emails there....

https://www.cu.edu/regents/DistrictMap/

There are over 40,000 active out of state alumni. Almost half the freshmen class are from Out of State. The majority of players on the team come from beyond Colorado's boarder.

What is the best way for the OOS friends of CU to voice our interests? Do regents even care about the interests of non-colorado residents?

Just say the word and recruit some more football crazy Texans and Californians to uproot, move to Colorado, and add some more muscle to this deal.

For anybody in District 3, I'll point out that Tillie Bishop isn't running for re-election. And his health hasn't been great for a while, so I'm not sure how active he is at this point.

It looks like the new candidates are Glenn Gallegos and Jessica Garrow. At this point it might be worth a shot at getting the message to them, as well as Tillie....

I know that some candidates are running for an at-large seat. We need to find out all the districts that will have an election.

Looking at the Regents site, it looks like Bishop (3), Hybl (5), Griego (7) and Ludwig (at-large) are up for re-election this year...

Neither of the at-large candidates give a damn about athletics. I e-mailed both of them about a month ago to get their take on the importance of the CU athletic department. Brian Davidson responded with a long-winded political non answer. Ludwig didn't even bother to respond. Neither cares. Neither will do anything to change the current state of affairs.

So I emailed 4 regents. Dr. Geddes from Castle Rock/Highlands Ranch district 1 didn't respond to me a month ago. If he doesn't respond I will push my family's votes against him next cycle. We will see if Bosley, Ludwig, Geddes, and Carrigan even respond this time around.

"Regent,

I am a alumnus from CU-Boulder and CU-Anschutz so I appreciate your time in reading my letter. I am proud to support CU in all endeavors however our University's neglect towards the Football Program has embarrassed me over the last half decade.

Whether right or wrong, the nation views our University through the lens of Football success and right now it disheartening to see the no commitment whatsoever by our administrators. Peer institutions like UCLA, Oregon, Washington and Kansas have no problem committing to excellence, yet Benson, Distefano and Bohn have no urgency to bring our football team out of the wasteland they put it in.

I respect your opinion and would love to engage in a constructive conversation, ESPECIALLY since my family has 6 votes for Regent waiting in the balance...

Thank you,
Rosstr"

Emailed 3 and am working on a form letter for the rest of my family to send to their regents.

Please let me know if it is poor taste to post my Regents response, in which case I will pull this post down. But Geddes responded promptly with,

"Thanks for your message. You have raised an important issue
which appears to be on the minds of many CU fans and supporters,
including my own.
Let's see how things evolve over the next few months."
Geddes

It's nice to know that at least there is someone on the other end. Even if he may or may not care much.

I actually think that is a very reasonable response. It also shows that the Regents are hearing the message. Keep it up.

On a election note, after reading that Libertarian Daniel Ong wants to remove the student athletics fee because of the move to the Pac 12, I know that I will not vote for him. He doesn't sound like an athletics supporter.

I think it would be a good idea for a few of us to get together, research the candidates' positions on athletics, and come out and endorse some folks. This is a website dedicated to CU athletics. We should be in a position to vet out the candidates and issue an endorsement. It might make things easier for people who visit the site and are looking for information on who they should vote for.

The Junta is talking about putting something together so that we all understand who the political players are with CU athletics. Hopefully you start seeing some the fruit of that endeavor next week.

That response would lead me to believe that there is something coming. BTW, he is Chairman of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee.

Mmmmm Fruit of the Junta.

Which one is Teets?

Would love to see the results of that!

Am always surprised that no former players that still live around these parts has ever run for it. I have no doubts that if someone ran on a platform of resurrecting the football team, they would get the majority of the popular vote, especially if it was a prominent former player. I suspect there are parts of the job though, that would disqualify most anyone with a athletic push as their primary appeal.

Rosstr:

Thank you for your interest and support of CU. I too am a UC Boulder grad and I assure you that CU’s leadership is shares your frustration and interest in turning our football program around. Our current leadership team (President Benson, Chancellor DiStefano, A.D. Bohn) put us in the position to make the historic switch to the PAC-12. My vote on leaving the Big XII for the PAC-12 was one of the easiest decisions I have made in nearly 8 years on the Board of Regents.

As you know, most college programs have ups and downs. CU’s down time has lasted longer than any of us hoped and started with Coach Hawkins. Given his prominence in college football at the time, I cannot fault anyone for thinking he would bring CU to excellence—but it was the opposite. In my view, Coach Embree inherited a program that could not be turned around in two years and absolutely deserves more time.

Of course, any coach needs help and we at CU are doing what we can. The State of Colorado now ranks 50th—dead last—in funding higher education. We now get 40% more in private donations than state funding. Some of these donations have been towards athletics but our program lacks the multi-million donors that could bring us to the next level.

I am sorry I don’t have a better answer for you, but please know that we appreciate that fans like you care and we ask you to continue your support. We’ve been in the valley before and I am confident we will be on the mountaintop again.

Michael Carrigan (Denver Regent 1)

Very nice of Carrigan to write me a note back. Again, if this is poor taste putting his words up here, I will immediately take it down. But I think it is to the benefit of these candidates for us to know that at least some of them respond and share frustrations, whereas some regents don't care to respond. Or others just embarrass themselves like DiStefano.

So props to Carrigan and here's my response:

Thank you for the response, Mr. Carrigan!

I agree with most of your sentiments. The results under Hawkins were disappointing considering his previous success, however retaining him a 5th year was shortsighted in my opinion. You can understand the hesitance in 'giving someone more time' when results get worse and worse. And that's being generous to Embree.

Watch Folsom attendances dip into the 30k's as proof.

You bring up wonderful points about CU's funding issues. However our athletic revenue pool is equivalent to most other pac 12 schools, including Wazzu, Washington, etc. There are over 1 billion dollars in current facilities upgrades in the Pac12. CU currently boasts $0 of that number. Even little CSU announced a $250 investment for an on-campus stadium. But at least President Graham understands what is at stake. CU is comfortable languishing.

Thank you for the constructive conversation, Mr. Carrigan! You and I are alike in believing CU-Boulder has the intangibles to be great at whatever it devotes itself to. Look no further than Tad Boyle to see what proper investment and great coaching can do. Look no further than our Physics Department and its parade of Noble Laureates. Look no further than the world-class Anschutz Medical Campus that sprung up overnight.

The alums are just waiting for the same investment in Football.

Thank you.

Not the response we wanted from Carrigan, but a great response none-the-less.

I expect everyone is going to fall back on the state-funding issues - especially with DiStefano commenting that he is preparing for CU to have 0% state funding within the next 10 years.

Thanks for sharing.

This argument holds NO water.

1. CU athletics is self-sustaining. And revenue is up over 200%.
2. CSU is facing the same funding constraints. They will build a 250mil stadium.
