Hirschman to start next week?

I have seen enough of Webb, he isn't the answer, even if Wood and/or Hirsch are worse, at least you'll know for sure to work up Dillon in the spring and Liufau and Dillon in the fall.

EDIT: Just imagine how hot Embo's seat will get if the O actually scores points with Hirsch at the helm.....

Their earlier "probably Hirschman" tweets were probably based on Embree's post game comments when he said he'd probably name Hirschman starter.

He said it wouldn't be a competition, and that he'd pick the starter, probably having his mind made up by Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm glad he doesn't want to make an off the cuff decision at such a vital point in the season. Ugh.

Excellent. I really think this team might have at least one, maybe two more wins in it this season. I think there's some symbolism to making this move now.

Wow, what makes you say that? I hope you are right, but I really question if this team will even be within four TD's of anybody not named Utah the rest of the way.

I'm honestly surprised it didn't happen a long time ago.

It seems to me that Embree and company know that Hirshman and Wood are better players, but somehow think that they should keep trotting out an inferior player in Webb week after week. Perhaps they want to buy more development time for these guys before they throw them to the wolves, but eventually you have to just put your best guys out there.

I think one of the things that is really indicative of the way that Embree and company feel about Webb vs. the other quarterbacks is the way that they call plays when Webb isn't in there. It seems to me that every time we put Hirshman or Wood in the game we run a lot more traditional dropback and throw plays, and a lot fewer timed three step drop short throws. When Hirshman was in the game today the staff repeatedly called plays that gave him opportunities to throw the ball down the field (which he took advantage of), if Webb would have been in the game I think we would have seen a lot more screens and short, timed throws.

Primarily being overly optimistic, probably, but: there are two teams left on the schedule that we beat late last season, something the coaches can point to to the kids. The kids must be sick to death of losing, and given a focus on something that looks attainable, the hope that a new QB might bring... I just think that the staff, if they are capable of anything - maybe they aren't, but if they are - can point out to these kids that they've survived - not thrived, but survived - against a real murderers row, and things are looking up now. We have winnable games. What do you say, guys, lets go out and tear thes boys up!! Wooooooo...

oops. got carried away

Lol

Remember last week. Embree said he would not throw Hirsch or Woods into the fray against Oregon. To me, that implied that today was Webb's last shot.

Kind of like you and giving bad coaches another shot. :smile2:

Inserting Hirschman at this point is like trying to fix Lattimore's injury with a bandaid.

Embree is doing Hirsh a favor. Giving him some playing time will allow other coaches to evaluate him should he decide to transfer at the end of the year

I have been very upset in games that backups have not gotten more Reps. Webb has been absolutely awful. Hirschman throws a better mid-range ball than Webb (it looks like to me) in that he hits the receiver in stride. Overall have not seen enough to judge too much but the QB position has to change - Webb has not made any plays. A change is way overdue.

Is Wood really that terrible? Honestly, he had the majority of snaps all through the spring. He's worked with the #1 offense more than Hirschman has, I'd expect. What the hell is happening to him?

I don't know. He got his ribs pretty bruised after the FSU game which has limited him. Although I heard he was back to taking snaps in practice.

After seeing him play, i dont think Hirsh is the answer. But he's got more tools than Webb. Even if he has no touch on his short throws and stares down his receivers, hopefully his accuracy and long ball make up for it.

Plus, who knows how he will play once he settles.

The big Q is definitely what's up with wood.

I also don't really see much potential in Hirschman, but I'll take anything that isn't Webb at this point.

Don't know if you had a chance to watch AU beat USC b/c you were busy watching that competitive CU/Oregon game; BUT ARIZONA WON. So I don't think we will seriously beat a spread attack team like Arizona, particularly in their backyarfd.

So what is our QB situation looking like for next year?

Is there going to be any real competition, or are all these guys going to be competing to back up Dillon?

I think with Wood we are seeing another case of stuborn coach syndrome. Wood is easily the most talented of the QBs, he may be the roughest around the edges but he is the most talented.

I think it irritates coaches to have to admit that they made the wrong decision. Easy to get on players for making the wrong decision but some coaches hate to admit that they made a mistake. What we have seen from Webb so far makes it clear that he was not the right decision. Embree is now going with Hirsch because he doesn't want to admit that he should have gone with Wood from the start.

We saw the same garbage with Hawk insisting on trying to turn Cody into his star despite the evidence that he just didn't have it. The result was all the screwing around that happened with Tyler. Tyler wasn't ever going to be a superstar but as it was he was good enough to get a look in the league. What could he have done with a RS year to develop. What could he have done if he had been given the coaching focus and had the offense built around him like Cody had.

It is obvious that Webb is at his ceiling, he isn't getting better than he is. I'm not trying to put him down, he's a Buff and appears to give it everything he's got. It is just that all he's got isn't enough and isn't going to be. I'd love to have a guy like him as a back-up but not as a starter. What I wonder is if a guy with talent like Wood was recieving the coaching and the reps and the game planning like Webb how much could he improve on the areas that he is weak.

And what is your empirical evidence for that pronouncement? Wood got all of the reps and the coaching in the Spring and looked pretty average in the Spring outing. Wood has been in Div. 1 Football for 3 years with some top flight QB coaching so he should not be rough around the edges. I desperately want someone to be the answer and I know the coaches do also.

Statements like "Embree is now going with Hirsch because he doesn't want to admit that he should have gone with Wood from the start." Are way over the top. It reminds me of when fans kept insisting there was a conspiracy to have Joel Klatt start over Bernard Jackson. That conspiracy theory never got mentioned after we saw Bernard start for awhile. The coaches do not have any agenda against Wood and I believe he is going to get some reps in the upcoming games, if he wants to grab the QB position then he is going to have to make plays. A 64 QB rating is not going to cut it. Woods problem has been he makes one good play and follows it up with a bad play add the fact that he has been banged up and it has limited his reps in practice.

Just basing it on what we know about size, speed/mobility, and arm strength. I have no way of knowing where he is at in terms of decision making, playing under pressure, etc. What I do know is that Webb doesn't have a skill set to be successful at this level on a team like this. He can kill it in practice and the meeting rooms but still can't deliver a 15 yard out before the CB closes or hit the seam at 18 yards. Not happening. Hirsch is better but still limited.

Wood was a priority recruit at Texas but got beaten out be Ash, nothing to be embarassed about there, lots of schools would gladly take Ash. We aren't going to a bowl, we aren't even being competitive until our opponents clear their benchs, this is not high risk. If we are going to have Wood around give him a significant shot in these circumstances. The only was I wouldn't do this is if his injuries are more than they are letting on.

And do I think Embree is capable of spiting himself just to prove he is the boss, yes I do. I have been around to many coaches who will do all kinds of stupid stuff just to prove themselves right or to show who is boss.

1 of these 6 qb's on the roster needs to just step up. If you put yourself in a position where the coaches can not keep you off the field, then you are the guy. There are lots of freshmen playing - I think we are just that weak at the qb position to be honest...next year is going to be even more interesting with 7 qb's on the roster??
