Are we in this situation if he didn't come in as interim in '10 and reinstitute Buff Pride/Traditions resulting in 2 emotional wins out of 3?

So, you are wondering if his "success" led the admin to believe we needed a coach from the successful era?

I think it's more like this led the admin to believing we needed to hire someone who had previously been part of the CU family.

Honestly... did we make a mistake by not hiring Cabral from the pool of candidates we had?

I'm not sure if it could be any worse. But who would his assistants have been? Probably all former CU players (more than Embree's imo)

I talked to Cabral after those three games and asked him how he turned it around. He said he just brought back the fundamentals and had the team play the way they knew they could. Makes me think that Embree needs to simplify schemes and let the team play with instincts rather than being trapped in their heads, backyard football-style.

Out of:

Mac
EB
Embree
Cabral

I'd say the only one that would've done worse is EB. And even then it's pretty close.

I don't think he would have gone as crazy with the in-the-family hiring as we have.

I think you would have seen Kiesau stay on OC (is that good or bad?). Hagan and Ambrose would have been kept on as well IMO. Low ceiling, but better than 3-10 last season.

Ambrose wasnt all bad, really the only thing I'd object to there is Hagan.

I'd be vehemently opposed to Kiseau staying as OC. Dude has been straight awful as the OC for UW this year.

The idea of Cabral probably should have gotten more consideration. Like the guys we have, he lacks experience as a coordinator.

On the other hand he has been successful recruiting, is respected by the players, and deals well with the head coach stuff off the field like media. A big advantage is that unlike Embree, EB, and to a lesser extent Brown he is a college guy with the college level contacts. He would have had a better probability of bringing in some guys with college level coordinator experience. He is much more in tune with the level of complexity that college players can handle and with motivating and influencing guys of that age group.

If EB wouldn't have come here and stayed in the NFL, we'd all be screaming that Bohn hired the wrong ex-Buff and that we needed to get EB here right now! Admit it.

It definitely would have gone down that way. Good thing we hired both so we can close this chapter without any "what if's".

you wouldnt have heard me say that - I thought from the start either Embo or EB was a bad idea.

Love cabral and his loyalty to CU but...his LB'S haven't been a solid unit nor have any of them stood out since dizon. We haven't recruited well at this position lately either.

I've been concerned about this for a good 5 years. Cabral seems more suited to a traditional 4-3 scheme, circa 1980.

He actually has a pretty solid core in Webb (overruns and bad field vision), Rippy (cannot stay on the field) and Major (injuries curtailing lateral movement).

I just do not think his adjustment to the Pac 12 will be an easy one. Fact is, we need a coordinator who is just as smart as the top teams in the league. Brown is clearly not, and Cabral appears to have his unit on a different page.

I go back to a quote from the days after the Sac State game. The coach (who does have a bright future) said "Well, we noticed the middle of the field always seemed to be open against CSU. So that was our scheme."

Linebackers.

We need to have an official opinions thread so we can keep track of this stuff, at least for next time

Cabral is better at developing the run stop linebackers used to stop run teams. Started recruiting smaller and faster linebackers to deal with the spread and zone read, has not worked out real well for him
