Alumni perception of the students

At the UW game my parents came up to the game because they have season tickets and were going to take me home after the game. I stood in the empty student section then moved to sit with my parents for the second quarter because they are decent seats. While I was there, this guy behind me said "I hate our students. We have the worst students in the nation." This pissed me off and I turned around and snapped at him saying we were on break and our football team sucks. Then I asked him if he has been to a basketball game and he said no and assumed the students didn't show up to that either. We filled the section up ten minutes before the Wofford game. Anyways, what is your guys thoughts on the students at CU when it comes to their support of athletics. All I hear is negative comments, but not one student has been there to see a winning season. Its kind of hard to have passionate fans for a loser, look at the basketball games.

This, this, this, and this.

I've been to many games where the student section rocked.

It seems like it was a lifetime ago.

The only problem I have with the students (and it was that way when I was a student, too) is that they don't show up for the beginning of the game and leave at 1/2 time and usually miss the beginning of the second half - even if we have a decent team or before it is proven that we absolutely suck. An easy solution would be to allow beer sales in the stadium, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Edit: And of course the students aren't going to show when the team is a complete joke and embarrassment and the games are held are ridiculous times.

How old was he? My guess is that the student section wasn't great when he was there either. Even when we were ranked in the top 5 the student section didn't fill up before kickoff, and we didn't have to go in one restricted entrance.

Minus historically being late for games (finally showing up mid to late 1st quarter) the students are pretty good about being loud and supportive of the football team. The guy you talked to is an idot.

Student section rocked when I was there. The football program has been kicked in the nuts for 10 years, and well this is the result...

The students at the games have there ups and downs. Over the years I have seen too many stupid things coming out of the students section so they will never get a great rating from me. I think the students go to sporting events not so much because they are big fans but rather because they want the party atmosphere. They are probably fairly typical of students across the country.

I agree with what most people are saying. The main problem with student support is that too many folks show up late, even in good years. It also used to piss me off that so many people gave their tickets to Nebraska fans for our home games against them. There always used to be pockets of red all over the stadium, not just in the north-west corner.

Overall, I don't think CU has a great fanbase (present company excluded) in comparison to a lot of comparable programs--this applies to everyone though, not just the students. Having said that, in a good year Folsom would be full and rocking, at least by the end of the first quarter.

okay I'll bite. I think the student section kinda sucks at football games and it has sucked a bit more each since since I was a freshman at 96. The night before my first football game I got insanely drunk on the hill, tried to get laid (didn't work out), went to bed around 3 or so and got up at 9 to go to party before playing Michigan. Remember this was a few years after the miracle at Michigan. We partied on some girl's balcony who lived in Buckingham and yelled at Michigan fans parking their cars. Undoubtedly, we showed up late to the game even then and all I remember is that we lost. Football games just aren't ingrained into our culture at CU and the more they lose the worse it gets. I think students used to camp out all night to get football tickets. We were on the right track after Mac and completely lost our way. The school doesn't make a big deal out of it, so it rubs off on the students. We have a game in Denver for crying out loud, that is just insanely stupid. Every time something spontaneous and fun happens, they kill it with fire (marshmallow fights, rush the field after every win)

So I don't blame the students for being largely apathetic about football because I think the school in general is apathetic about football. That being said, I don't hate the students in the least bit. I love how they make the keg hostile and I have no doubt that if they start playing football at CU the students will be back and be loud and proud.

To a degree, yes. Of course, beer was sold on campus when I was there.

Beer cup fights at half time were epic. 3.2 beer and 18 yr old legal drinking age made Folsom's student section one big party.

These days smart phones are clutched like those beer cups of yesteryear.

I don't fault students at CU for being lackadaisical in their support for CU football. They are just following the example set by No-420 Phil and Old Man Benson. Leadership in fan support starts at the top. If anything, student fan support mirrors the quality of the product on the field.

The passion of the students hasn't died. It has just relocated from Folsom Field to the Keg.

If the goal is for renewed interest in football by students, then bring back the victories.
To bring students into the stadium early and keep them through half time, it wouldn't hurt to bolster the wireless coverage in the stands and return booze into the concourses.

Bad football + bad cell coverage + Argus security + a dry stadium = missing students.

The students are kind of lame, but it's not entirely their fault. CU does absolutely NOTHING to ingrane a sense of ownership with the students with the football team or the school itself. CU acts as though the students should be happy to be there. They make it nearly impossible to actually enjoy the games themselves. They basically encourage late arrivals with the way they move the students through the admission gates. Basically, the students are a micrososm of the fanbase as a whole. They're getting treated like garbage, so they're apathetic. They have better things to do with their time than get pissed on by a University who doesn't value their contribution to the system. Sound familiar?

The students are the least of our problems.

They pay a hefty fee to support the athletic department. They pay more on top of that to have tickets to games.

But they also paid a lot of money to come to CU at least in part because there's a ton of fun stuff to do around here. Football is no longer fun so they don't take it seriously. Basketball is fun and they get there early as a standing room only crowd.

Fix the football team, give them something worth cheering for, and CU will quickly have one of the best student sections in the country.

Blaming the fans for the problems is bad enough. Blaming the students is taking it to another level of having your head in the sand about what the problems are at CU.

Not to mention their parents...:wink2:

The showing up late to the game is the biggest thing that irks alumni. Shoot, it irked me even when I was a student.

The second half late thing is newish, that seems to have started after the marshmallow fights were shutdown.

As pointed out by others, the University seems to make it especially difficult to maintain a good strong student presence from start to finish during the game.

When I was a student, the students and the student section was awesome. Now you guys suck ass....of course we had beer, Mac and winning teams.

Well they had to crack down on the marshmallows as people were stuffing them inside of nails and throwing them at Nebraska players.

To be fair, people would chew them up and then throw them. That was pretty gross. But hell, it was still fun.

I see no issue with this

I remember the year that they made the mistake of having the Texas band march near the student section. The tubas were immediately targeted as favored marshmellow destinations.

I just want to make it perfectly clear, I am the best student at CU right now:lol:

I think the students are little ****s - just like when I was there, and I was a little ****

is that really true or was it started by a Nebraska fan. Nebraska's sideline is on the opposite side of the field as the students. I don't remember a single marshmallow that had a penny, was frozen, or had a nail in it.
