Pow Pow doubtful for the game on Friday

The way he is used is not sustainable over the long term. I mentioned this several weeks ago, but he is now going to miss his second full game and parts of two others. You simply cannot afford to run your only good offensive player into the ground.

If there is any doubt, please just sit him.

He was the lone bright spot in a dismal season. Get him to the off season without any further damage. Our new coach is going to need him healthy in 2013.

Looks a little less likely that we win now.

Lol....oh, I am so funny! I mean, less likely we can keep them from doubling the spread against us.

I know it is not traditional, but if I were to present the Heart Award at the close of Friday's game I would give it to Powell. In my mind he plays with "The Heart of a Buffalo" more than any other.

Good. He won't change the outcome of Friday if he plays but he may permanently damage his brain. Let the kid have a chance at a future career.

I don't know about that. He has only had three games with more than 20 carries, that being Oregon with 20, Arizona with 32, and Sac State with 28. You could make the argument his number of carries against Arizona and Sac State were much, but really he hasn't touched the ball an excessive number of times for a feature back. He has generally taken a below average load for a tailback in a pro system.

I think a much better culprit for his struggles is the fact that his only move seems to be lowering his head and trying to run over whoever is in front of him. In my opinion, he takes way too many big hits trying to run everybody over.

Your last point is well taken and more at what I am getting at when I say not sustainable. Even 15 carries a game with the way he plays football is living pretty dangerously.

Quite true. I think that he absolutely has to build his repertoire with the ball if he is going to be a full time halfback. I actually like the progress he's made this season, and I think that Bienemy has done a pretty good job (am I still allowed to say that here?) in getting him to better utilize his blockers and find the lane, but if he can't keep himself healthy I think he should probably head back to fullback. If this were to happen, I think a really good model player for Powell would be Mike Alstott, a sort of fullback/short yardage/#2 tailback hybrid.

It's a shame Powell may not play due to a concussion. He has been learning to run with the ball during this season after playing as a blocking fullback. I'm sure Bieniemy has been working with him pretty hard and some success has occurred. After watching him this season I think he needs run with his head up a little more and react to a hole quicker. He would probably gain more yards and also take a little less of a beating by running to the available daylight instead of just bowling into tacklers. I have enjoyed watching him play hard with some success.

On another note, I was high on him after the first 2 games and thought he would be good as a tailback and a fullback. A couple of know-it-alls on another board were belittling me for being high on him and belittling him for not really showing that much. It was said that take away his 64 yard run leaves him as nothing special and he will be only a 3 yard per carry back. As we have seen, he has been one of the few bright spots. He rushed for 691 yards and about 4.5 yards per carry as a true freshman in an offense running against stacked defensive boxes due to lack of a deep passing threat. He is a good football player and I hope to see him help this team to get better.

B30 - that was me, and at the time, I believed it. I had not seen him make a move a single time, it was just straight downhill only. What he has developed since then, is a bit of an ability to also make people miss. I'm happy to see that change, but I was not anticipating it. I'm pleased with what he has delivered this year and I agree that with his development, I was wrong.

No worries. I'm pretty sure I saw your post on this board regarding what you observed with Powell after taking away the long run. I think you were being reasonably cautious. I'm also sure you didn't belittle him or me for being high on his potential at that time on this board. What I referred to in my post above was what a couple of guys had to say on another board. They weren't very complementary of him and made fun of me for being positive about what I thought he could develop into. They go by hawg1 and NumbersBuff. One of them said that Powell wouldn't amount to anything but a 3 yard per carry back.

I understand about being cautious with a new, unproven player. But the fact that he could actually break a long 60+ yard run along with running hard and tough was an eye opener. I also liked that he was a pretty big guy at about 235 pounds and a lot of his weight looked like it is muscle packed in his hips and thighs. I like to see a back with that type of build. He still needs to recognize a hole better and follow blocks better, but if he continues to develop without getting hurt a lot he may become very good. Anyway, it was a bright spot to see what I thought was potential in an otherwise horrible season. Take care.
