The Official Gary Andersen for next Head Coach Thread

Andersen is the Head Coach at Utah State. He's been there for 4 years after being the DC at Utah from 04 to 08 (DL coach only in 2004) which includes the 2008 undefeated season.

2012 10-2 6-0


2011 was the first bowl game that Utah State went to since 1997. The 4 years before Andersen took over the program had a total of 9 wins. They have now qualified for consecutive bowl appearances


Andersen had success as a DL coach (2004) and DC (2005-2008) at Utah and was on the staff for both of Utah's undefeated seasons (04 and 08). Was also on the Utah staff during the 1997-2002 years as a DL coach under McBride.

Interesting Utah State beat Utah (and his old boss) this year on the football field which consisted solely of players he recruited.



Also as you can see through his four years as head coach at USU, he's taken one of the worst programs in Div 1 football and built it into a conference winning title team in a place where football success is very small ( 6 Bowl games total in their history). Obviously this guy is finding talent and developing it at a place where its not easy to do which closely resembles the issues we currently have at CU (not a strong recruiting base in the state, behind in facility race, hasn't found enough talent to even be competitive in the Pac 12). Gary Andersen is a much more qualified head coaching candidate than Jon Embree ever was and I think it would be wise for CU to look in his direction. BTW he is a Utah Ute alum. He is 48 years old

No thanks, the program need to make a bigger splash than that. Most of the other teams are hiring high profile guys like Jim Mora, Rich Rodriguez, you want Gary Anderson.

Funny but was Rich Rod a big name before he got to WVU?
 
I'm not sure he gives us enough recruiting juice which we desperately need right now.

His defense rankings take a step back once he began coaching on the BCS level, though.

I would be perfectly happy with Wilcox.

Sure, but I can tell you Wilcox has a big time rep (Texas approached in 2010 for the vacant DC position there), especially on the west coast. Two top 40 defenses at two different BCS schools in two different conferences is pretty damn good IMO.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, but Duff shows that Tennessee's defensive ranking actually regressed when Wilcox took over. Certainly not to horrible standards, but I just want to make it clear that his rankings while at Boise may inflate his resume a lil bit.

Fair enough. I agree that he at least deserves consideration.

Regressed a bit, but recovered in 2011 after major attrition in the wake of Kiffin's departure. The big key is how they dropped off a cliff after he left and Washington took a huge step forward this year. Make no mistake, defense carried the Huskies to 7 wins (could have been 8 with a made FG on Friday) because their offense went into hibernation most of the season.

Jimmy, I think Anderson deserves a long look.
 
I would be on board with Anderson. I caught some of the game where they beat Utah, and they looked like a well-coached team. And like you say, he has experience building something from nothing.

especially on defense. Andersen is my top pick for head coaches outside the BCS conference.
 
I am not sold yet. If we're going for a HC from a mid-major I really like De Ruyter or maybe Dykes.
 
My feeling is that we need to make a bit of a splash with this hire. Somebody that will make ESPN take notice. Anderson, while probably qualified, isn't that guy.

Yeah - just like Tad Boyle was heard of....

Although a consideration, about 10x smaller of one compared to the likelihood of just being a great coach who can build a great staff and program. He's done that in booneville.

This guy seems boring, but he is a proven good coach and would make our defense instantly better. He also had no money to go hire an experienced Offensive Coordinator at USU and thus went and found a guy who could be solid and he has done well with that choice. Since that guy is young still, he'd likely come with Anderson and thus you'd have your Defensive minded Head Coach and your young bright Offensive Coordinator / QB coach, who runs a zone-read / spread offense that is state of the art.

No, recruits won't know this guy, but frankly, the guys he's been able to recruit to Logan, UT are beating teams like Utah already and he will do a lot better than that with the guys he brings to Colorado (and the young guys we have).

Winning games will help recruiting more than anything.

See Tad Boyle's progress since he left UNC.

I'd like to hear how this guy will stay at Colorado once he gets us going to bowl games. Is this his dream job? Looks like he grew up in Utah or Idaho and attended Rick's College (JC) and U of Utah. Going back to Utah may be the main threat, and I'm not too worried about that.

I'm with Sacky on this. Guys like Mason, Wilcox, and Anderson are fine candidates and may very well end up being good head coaches at the BCS level, but I think it's time for a bold hire.

And how are you so certain this guy would win and wouldn't end up like the last 2?

There is no way this program could or should go for a non big time named coach with immediate clout on the recruiting front after departing with Embree so quickly....This guy is not it by any way, shape or form.
 
I don't care about the name. Minnesota hired Jerry Kill and pissed off the alumni because he wasn't a "name" coach. Minnesota was about as bad as we are now, and he now has them bowling this year. Give me the guy that can coach.
