Born: September 26, 1966 McMinnville, OR
Alma Mater: Air Force 1989

COACHING CAREER

1989–1994 Air Force (assistant)
1995–2000 Ohio (OC/QB)
2001–2003 Wake Forest (OC/QB)
2003–2005 Denver Broncos (assistant)
2006 Houston Texans (OC)
2007–present Air Force

Bio/Experience

Calhoun is the only head football coach at the Air Force Academy to lead teams to five consecutive seven-plus win seasons, and is the only coach in the history of service academy football to coach a team in five straight bowl games. Air Force has done this under Calhoun's tutelage while playing very strong opponents. Calhoun's 2009 Air Force squad was the only team in the last 50 years of service academy football to play at least four ranked teams and win a bowl game in the same season. In the 100-plus year history of service academy football, Calhoun was the first coach to lead teams to at least eight wins and bowl game in his first four seasons as a head coach.
Calhoun has lifted the Falcon football program to unprecedented heights within the Mountain West Conference. Calhoun's five teams are a combined 24-15 in the Mountain West Conference and 41-24 overall. Air Force had posted three straight losing seasons from 2004-2006 before his arrival. His 24 wins in the MWC are the most in school history in a five-year span. Calhoun's conference winning percentage makes him the only Air Force coach in any MWC sport at the Academy to have coached at least three years and have an overall winning record in conference play (next are Fisher DeBerry, Football 1999-2006 of 26-32 45% and Joe Scott, Men's Basketball 2000-2004 of 21-39 35%).
With Calhoun at the helm, the Falcons have played their best football in the second half of the season. Air Force is 20-10 under Calhoun during the last six games of the regular season, including a 5-1 mark in 2007 which is the second-best in school history. Prior to his arrival, Air Force was 12-24 during the final six regular season games from 2001-2006.

Questions
Will his coaching translate? Will his military disciplinary style translate to CU?
What type of offense will he bring? Will it be the service academy triple option or will it be a more conventional offense?
Not a big name. Will He excite the fan base?

Strengths
Proven D1 Winner
Successful at multiple locations
NFL and College Coordinator Experience
Disciplined Teams

Also left out the benefit of him having spent many years as a coach in Colorado. Not that it is hugely important but I would hope he could cherry pick the cream of CO's classes every year-problem is just not enough in-state talent.

I said in another post that I'd probably put him in my top 10 but probably as #10.

How much time do you have? How many mountain west championships does the guy have? What part of his offense translates to championships? What part of his offense is appealing to higher end athletes to run? This guy is a failure waiting to happen. I will PUKE if he is our next coach. He's got Paul Johnson/GA Tech probability, only with less upside.

Is this guy going to be able to go into central Los Angeles and dig players out to come to Boulder? If not, it's already a lost cause.

Why do you think he'd run the triple option here... did he do it at ohio, wake forest, how about the broncos or the texans?

It's an ever evolving philosophy i'm sure. If he knew of a better way on offense, why hasn't he approached it yet?

because service academies dont get the type of athletes than can run a traditional offense... service academies excel at brute force... thats why all the academies have run the triple option for 60 years.. they do what fits their players and the type of players they can have best

meh... better than Embree but not a thrilling hire... probably a 'safe' hire
I just looked at his record at AFA and his best win as HC was against #25th ranked Houston in the 2009 Armed Forces Bowl. Call me not excited.

How many MWC championships? Or are you going to tell me Service Academies aren't expected to win those either?

never said that... but they were up against utah in at their finest as well as boise st...i think you give calhoun way too little credit

Troy is probably in the perfect place for him right now. Pretty low expectations from the Air Force -- win more than lose in conference, win the CIC trophy every now and then, go to a bowl game most years. There is very little media scrutiny of him or his program, he does not recruit in the standard sense of the word, and he does not go up against the "big boys" in recruiting. I think that he could get better results from our players in a coaching sense, but I also think that we're trying to raise the bar higher than that now. Troy is a great guy, a "true Falcon", and better off left where he is.

Nothing against him, but I think my credit of him is fair. Not truly impressed enough to hand over the reigns of a BCS program with some many questions about his resume and also in recruiting. Nothing about him strikes me as dynamic or unifying the Buff masses. Sounds like another local hire on the cheap.

 that argument is so played out... if hes good enough for cal to look out.. why is he good enough for us?

I've warmed to him over the last 2 years. I've watched him pretty closely this year, and I think he is a pretty dang good coach on gameday. He strikes me as the type of guy who will mold is offense to the talent he has, which I like.

He doesn't provide much excitement, and I have real worries about recruiting - but I wouldn't hate him. He would be on my second tier

I have watched many Air Force games since he was hired (living in the Springs). He is probably the best X and O coach in the state, including Pros. His offense has changed to fit the roster perfectly each year. With Jefferson, it went more Spread hurry up and those concepts carried over this year. He had 3 games this year (@Mich, @UNLV, and Navy) in which they should/could have won (lead in 4th or easily blown chances). That would put him at 9-3. He could have taken a SEC job 2 years ago if he wanted and wouldnt be surprised if he is interviewed for 2 BCS jobs this year (Cal and Tenn again). Whoever does take the CU job, he would out coach for the first year or two.

Saying all that the fit doesnt make sense. I don't think he can recruit in California like needed and while his NFL background would help him, what about his assistants, the ones that will be selling the program. At the end of the day, if the roster was stock full of talent, he would be the perfect coach, would get this team to a BCS bowl and get rolling. However, I dont think he would finish in the top 10 of the Pac-12 in recruiting.

I also do not think it makes sense for him to even take this job either. The matter of fact is CU is a lower tier BCS job and Calhoun, if he wanted to make a jump, could at least snag a mid-tier BCS job at some point. All he needs is one 10 win season and he could be getting close to an upper-tier BCS job.

Just an opinion from a CU alum who has watched 20-30 AFA games in the last 5 years.

Good stuff here, thanks.
