COACHING ACCOMPLSHMENTS
Semifinalist for the 2011 Broyles Award,
presented annually to college football's top assistant coach.

• Promoted to assistant head coach for 2012
season.

• The 2011 defense ranked in the top 50 in
scoring defense (24th, 20.7), total defense (30th, 344.7), rushing defense
(47th, 138.9) and passing defense (38th, 205.8). It was only the second time
since 2003 and fourth time in the last 15 seasons a Notre Dame defense ranked
in the top 50 in all four categories.

• For the first time in 10 years, Notre Dame's
defense allowed fewer than 21 points per game in consecutive seasons. The Irish
are one of 13 teams to allow less than 21 points per game in each of the last
two years.

• Diaco's defense surrendered 14 points or
less in five games in 2011, the most since 2002.

• The 2010 defense was dramatically improved
compared to the 2009 defense in almost every statistical category: scoring
defense (from 63rd in '09 to 23rd in '10), pass efficiency (82nd to 25th),
rushing defense (89th to 50th) and total defense (86th to 50th).

• In his only season at Cincinnati, he was
charged with replacing 10 starters on the Bearcats' defense, including every
player on the front seven for 2009.

• Prior to Cincinnati, spent three years as
the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator on Al Groh's coaching staff
at the University of Virginia from 2006-08.

• Served as co-defensive coordinator and
linebackers coach under Brian Kelly at Central Michigan in 2005.

• In his only season with the Chippewas, Diaco
turned around Central Michigan's rushing defense that just two years earlier
had ranked last in the Mid-American Conference.

Questions
No Head Coaching Experience.
Not a big name. Will de excite the fan base?
Could he recruit CA and TX?

Strengths
Successful at multiple locations.
BCS Coordinator Experience.
Will he leave at first opportunity?

It would be a significant hardship if he is hired but chooses to remain in South Bend until ND's season is over in January--maybe disqualifying.

That's likely to be the case with anyone unless it's one of the few who are not coaching this year.

So why has there been almost zero talk about this guy since the Embree firing? Could he be the name that comes out of nowhere and gets the job? (I'm hoping so...)

If it is true that Bohn is not (yet) considering anyone who doesn't have head coaching experience, this guy is not even on the radar.

I am hopeful that Bohn will seriously take a look at some of the coordinators, or at least inquire as to their interest.

All indications have been that head coach experience is a criteria in this search. If we had heard anything about coordinators being in consideration, I'd think that Diaco would be at the top of the fan wish list.

The report (which was actually penned two weeks ago) identifies Colorado, Central Michigan, New Mexico State, Eastern Michigan and UNLV as potential destinations for Diaco.

One of these things is not like the others......

Bob Diaco has Bob Stoops written all over him, IMO. Hell, he's even from Iowa.

He would be my #1 choice.

Diaco would be a coup.

Diaco is my #1 choice. He knows what a big-time program looks like. He knows the kind of athlete that is needed to compete at that level. He gets his players to play above their supposed talent level. He's a winner. My only reservation is that he's never had to turn around a program. I suppose ND was kind of a turnaround project, but it's nothing like what he'd walk into here.

South Bend for Las Cruces. It could happen. lol

Yup. I have more confidence in someone who only has coordinator experience at the big time compared to a HC who has had success at the lower level with no big-time coordinator experience.

When Stoops went to Oklahoma, he had ties to the region. Diaco's entire experience is in the Big10 footprint. How long would it take him to build a network on the west coast and in Texas?

Not trying to shoot the idea down but it's a concern.

If he were to sign a contract with Colorado, would I have to root for ND to win a national championship to boost his credentials with recruits?

I don't think I could do that, though an SEC team on the other side of the ball could help elminate a lot of the sting.

ND allowed 10 TDs all year. That's it. ND is also top 10 in lowest yards allowed.

The question is can he be a HC? Can he rebuild?

My point all along (Butch Jones thread).

This dilemma is tearing me apart. It would have been so much easier to root for Georgia though.

Surround him with experienced co-ordinators and build new facilities like an indoor facility and he will do just fine.

If we can't get Strong or Golden then Diaco is my next choice - I really like this guy and would take him over Jones, Anderson, Deruyter, and McIntyre in a heartbeat.

BK is well known as an offensive coach and ND is not overly good on offense this year. Their defense has literally carried them to the BCS NC and Diaco is pretty much solely responsible for that. Not sure we can ask for much more of an impressive coordinator.

He's apparently a really good recruiter for ND, albeit in the northeast. I don't see why he'd have trouble refocusing his efforts into CO, AZ, CA, TX if he were the coach here.

ND requires some pretty high admission standards so I'm sure he's not just recruiting every player with a pulse.

No. That does not count in the least. It's a ceremonial title that doesn't mean anything in terms of actual job responsibility. It may or it may not. All it really does is build a resume while internally saying that one coach has some seniority. For example, Rip Scherer was the AHC at CU this season.

Whoa. I was being sarcastic (there really needs to be a universal font for that) - as are most of my posts. That being said, I WOULD prefer this guy over Jones.

All he'd have to do is bring a video tape of the Stanford and USC goal line stands (and Oklahoma game for the TX guys) and be like "that was me". What's up???
