Meet Butch Jones

http://www.coachbutchjones.com/blog/blog.php

Might want to get to know him. Besides the fact that Woody Paige has been a balloon for MB in the past, I was told by the same Lville beat writer to look "closely" to his location within about 100 miles.

I have spoke to MB twice in the last 24 hours and he is really not giving much away. That said, he has insisted that he has a name in mind who is a current head coach in an AQ conference and they have done the due diligence and feel good about it.

Jones has reportedly been offered by Kentucky and Purdue. Though they have evidence on both sides of those reports. To be honest, he would be about my 4th choice, but a very highly respected and well thought of coach in other coaching circles. One other current PAC12 HC told me yesterday, "Jones is a boon for anyone who can land him...he will win, and with honor and academic success as well."

My concerns are that he has never coached west of Michigan, has always had Brian Kelly's talent, and has a reputation for being too clean. That said, many in the coaching world believe he is a "dynamic leader" and brilliant mind.

On the positive side: Runs a hurry up, spread attack. Has dealt with very underfunded ADepts, and has a great reputation that other coaches in the assistant pool seem to believe in.

We will soon see how much there is to this...but as my phone exploded at this late hour, I believe there is much to this.

Thanks for being our eyes and ears on this. I know very little about BJ (although I certainly enjoy receiving them). Got some research to do.

I don't have any problems with Jones as a potential candidate.

That being said - I think Mike Bohn is playing this INCREDIBLY close to the vest, and frankly I don't believe a word of what the news outlets are reporting.

To a man, they all were 100% convinced that Water Bottle was coming back. They were totally in the dark about the coaching change then, and they still are today.

Jones is intriguing. Certainly looks like he can coach which is something we haven't seen in Boulder for years.

Not all that hyped about Jones. Won @ Central Michigan and Cincinnati, but both times he was following Kelly, who obviously can build a program. Sounds a little Hawk-like to me.

I'm a little lackluster with Jones as well. Perhaps he should follow Kelly to ND, and Kelly could come to Boulder?

I'm much higher on Strong (apparently a distant, unrealistic dream), MacIntyre, Anderson and Deruyter than Jones. But admittedly my opinion is a pretty uninformed one.

I wouldn't hate it if he came to CU. I'd agree that he'd be about 4th or 5th on my list of possibilities behind, Andersen, DeRuyter, Strong and maybe MacIntyre...

A meh hire, but who knows it could work. More Hawkins like hire, didn't really build up a program like Anderson.

I'm surprised that people would rather see coaches whose career experience is in the WAC, rather than a coach with BCS experience - especially when the BCS coach has already won a BCS conference championship.

Agreed. I'd prefer DeRuyter or even Anderson over Butch Jones. I'm not all that thrilled about MacIntyre either.

The Big East was a BCS conference in name only. Not really on par with some of the other AQ conferences imo. I think this is part of the reason that folks would be more excited for some of the other guys who cut their teeth as coordinators for "legit" BCS conferences. I'm personally not really that high on him as a home run hire, though like others, I haven't really done my due diligence yet.

If you examine coaches with the solitary criterion 'did the most with the least', which is a fair consideration for our situation, MacIntyre is the guy.

Am I wrong to accuse you of having a bias against programs west of the Mississippi? Look deeply within your dirty-Southern soul (insomuch as you have one), and get back to me...

Well in fairness, you've got to admit DeRuyter walked into a decent situation himself. Pat Hill may have declined a bit, but that was hardly a bare cupboard for DeRuyter. In contrast, MacIntyre walked into a program that was actively discussing shutting down their football program, and took them from 1-12 to 10-2 over the course of 3 seasons.

Jones was at CMU before Kelly arrived so the argument could be made that Kelly won with kids that Jones recruited to CMU.

Butch Jones resume:

In 15yrs as an assistant coach he only spent 1 yrs at a BCS school as a WR coach.
Both head coaching jobs he inherited teams left by Brian Kelly.
Never had to build a program himself. He inherited a team in Cinci that under Brian Kelly went 10-3, 11-3, 12-0.
Butch Jones takes over and goes 4-8, 10-3, 8-3.
Brian Kelly had Cinci ranked in top 20 all 3yrs. Butch Jones has never had Cinci ranked in top20.
Also, many analysts claim he needs a specific type of QB (think Tebow) to have Offensive success.
In his career as HC he has beaten 1 ranked team #25 Va Tech earlier this year.
Never coached west of Cinci & has no PAC-12 ties.
1 Four star recruit in last 3 classes.

In short. He would be a disaster most likely.

Jimmy, I think that's a pretty slanted case you are making there. You've smoothed over a few details to make a specific case.

Enlighten me Darth. 7/8 points I listed are FACTS. The other one you can see analysis by googling Butch Jones offense.

Gotta agree here. Bohn said his fave is a current BCS head coach...plus running the spread helps since word is they decided to go in that direction already.

BTW...some people think CU isn't desirable...have you ever been to Cincinnati? More money, plan for new facilities, Boulder, plus ability to compete in the PAC-12 with some of the elite teams in college football....this guy should jump at the chance...IMO...

He's not in my top 5, we need someone who has built a program ground up or a big name for recruiting, I don't think Jones fits either of those, but I'm pretty sure he could beat Sacramento State and CSU.

Gotta admit, on paper this looks like Hawk hire 2.0. Maybe he is a better football mind who had Peterson. I'd be more comfortable with a guy who had more big time BCS experience while an assistant. Like a Strong, Mullen, or Golden. It is what it is though, those guys are all more likely to get steps up to the SEC gigs that are currently open.

Agree that it is a bit surprising that McIntyre isn't getting more run.

The question is, if Bohn has it in his heart to hire a proven BCS HC, who else is there that we can afford that has the squeaky clean image needed to get approval on the hire? The list of available candidates who meet that criteria, which some media have said Bohn has explicitly said he is seeking, is damn small.

Don't agree with patr that this is a hire we'd be very happy about but there's worse options than Jones.

Mixed feelings about Jones...a little disappointed the Strong stuff turned out to be BS.

Jones was at CMU for years before Kelly arrived at CMU. The argument could be made that Kelly won with Jones' players not the other way around.

CU hasn't played good on offense for so long because we haven't had a very good QB for so long. Anyone recall the name Munchie Legaux? Legaux was Jones' starting QB this season...wasn't he a CU commit at one time?

http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/502335/munchie-legaux

Given that CU was running the no huddle offense this recent season, the transition to Jones' offense wouldn't be that great plus Jones can make the necessary changes to get CU's offense pointed in the right direction. CMU and Cinncinnati's ADs have had funding problems and Jones didn't use that as an excuse to field crappy teams. If CU gets the facilities built, that will be a first for Jones so the sky's the limit.

I live in Ohio and I think that Butch Jones would be a fantastic hire for CU. My only concern would be recruiting CA & TX, as he has mostly just recruited in OH
