Blessing In Disguise ?

This whole Butch Jones quest felt funny from almost day one. I have a feeling this may end up being a big blessing in disguise. IMHO this wasn't his dream job and I bet he would have jumped ship when it was right for him. Good riddance Butch....

I think so - but he will probably go to Tenn and win 10 games. That is how CU luck works these days

I think yes. But the biggest blessing (assuming it follows on to the next man up) is that facility improvements are tied to the deal.

Maybe the not getting Butch part, as it seems like he acted like a prima donna. But the getting strung along and being left at the altar part is embarrassing and doesn't make us very attractive for other suitors.

I hope so. Something didn't feel right about this guy.

Yea, being played for as long as we were makes CU look silly. It's very unfortunate. If Jones was looking to greener pastures the entire time, then yes, we dodged a bullet.

There must have been some red flags during the process. Did the admin think he was that good and they overlooked them? Are all HC's so flawed that nobody noticed?

Definitely glad he's not coming here. All of his nonsense was a huge red flag. I just wish we had not wasted so much time and money trying to land this joker.

Heck yes. I didn't even feel a single twinge of sadness when I saw the announcement. I'm looking forward to a MacIntyre/Deruyter that will be foaming at the mouth to be our coach.

Enough sour grapes. He would have been a good hire, but no one is a sure thing. (Except that we will have a better coach than the last one.)

I don't think so, with the Jones offer I saw a commitment from CU that we haven't seen in a while. Land a fairly big name coach, spend the $$$ for assistants, facilities, new unis, the whole shebang.

How much of that comes with the next candidate? Likely smaller $$$ for HC which will trickle down to assistant pool. Facilities won't need to be included in contract for the next guy, so that could be out the window. I saw Jones as a chance for CU to at least get back to respectability, even if that's just mid-tier bowl games. With the new coach you are going to have more risk in hiring someone without that BCS experience and in DeRuyter's case, a HC for 1 year.

I'm likely just ticked and will come around to the next candidate, just a very deflating process...

Jones is a good coach. Not my first choice, but definitely an upgrade.

After watching his actthoug, I am not all torn up that he isn't coming.

It is nice to see the admin. get seriuos about FB, too bad it took seven years of abysmal FB to make that a reality.

Not very enthused abotu the HC names out there now DeRuyter, 1 whole year of HC experience. MacIntyre from the WAC. Maybe one of those guys or somebody else we've never heard of will be great. I hope so.

I am eager to hear how this played out. There has not been a word here in Cincy from the University or the players. I do think he will head to TN, and you will get a coach that has ties in the West to coaches and HS that would make the transition easier. I think MacIntyre would be a great get.

I would have been happy to get him and was hoping he'd sign. He really did seem like a perfect fit. Looking back, however, at how it has played out, not so sure anymore. But to the point of the thread, I honestly believe this may work out better in the end. It really didn't seem like Jones was all that fired up to come here. Get someone who is young, energetic, a great tactician and organizer, and a great recruiter. It'll work out in the long run, I believe.

I was disappointed for sure, having my hopes up, then getting them dashed. Really feel for some of the players, like Dillon, who tweeted "So glad I can finally stop holdin it back! Huge news for me and very excited about the future #ButchPlease" last night.

That's a stretch. Barnett wasn't exactly a world beater. Why hasn't he got another job somewhere else?
he beat a lot teams. more than we've beaten in the last 7 years, and he hasn't exactly been trying to get back in.

Not crying over this one. He's a fine coach, and would have been fine at CU, but his behavior in all this seemed very odd. I think his behavior has condemned him to life in Cincy...what program would take this drama queen now?

Damn Cpaw you are too nice. I hope you haven't resigned yourself to as much rejection in your love life as you have your football coach. I am now glad to not have to deal with this from him every year.

Barnett was a good coach who got a lot out of talent. He won us our last conference title. What the **** do you think ruined his career? It's not that hard and it's not bad coaching that did.

I would stack him with Lane Kiffin. There would have been some loophole worked in and then his tail is gone in two years. Probably would have been singing the fight song and slip out the back, win 10 games and disappear or just leave in the middle of the night. What's worse is the way this has played out. Give the guy 48 hours and if there's no deal then tell him thanks but we are moving on. Everyone is ready to put this behind them but it's a virus with everyone puking. Jones turned out to be a whiny bitch that is stringing, now Cincy on, and will be looking to Tenn. If Cincy loses him, then good riddance.

Even if we had landed him I didn't see him staying long enough to bring any real kind of stability.

Played, quirky, indecisive, money grabbing and fame hungry - take your pick. From the covert tour of the campus on I wondered if he was the kind of man the Buffs needed at the helm in the long term. Don't take any pictures of me, quit talking about this or I'll walk away from this press conference = WEIRD

I'm seeing a guy who isn't ready for the big tent.

I don't question his coaching ability.

But anyone who is so worried about media leaks and hiding behind food carts to avoid his photo being taken is completely unrealistic about the life of a head coach in a Power 5 conference. If you want to make the kind of money that comes with one of these jobs and have a legit opportunity to be competing for a championship, you can't also be someone who expects to be in the media (including social) only at the time and circumstances of your own choosing.

Right now, I'm feeling like we missed out on a great coach who would have been a mess in this environment. Butch Jones to Tennessee makes me laugh. This guy will go nuclear when he discovers that his wife and kids can't go to the grocery store after a loss without adult giving them a hard time.

Completely agree on all these points. Thanks for typing that up for me!

Dream job? There is no one out there that has CU as its dream job at this point. You hire the best coach you can when you are in this position and definitely don't worry about him leaving for greener pastures.
