Kirby Smart vs. MacIntyre or DeRuyter

I know Bohn really wanted a proven HC. THing is he was going after a proven BCS head coach which turns out to be difficult.

Would we prefer a proven Coordinator at a top BCS program like Stanford or Alabama or a proven HC at a lower level school?

I ask because someone on Twitter said there was a Kirby Smart siting in Denver today. May not be true or may be here for other reasons, but either way, it is possible Bohn is opening up the search now.

Did he arrive in a UFO accompanied by bigfoot?

Kirby Smart a good coach on his own or is it just cause he's under the Saban umbrella?

Well he wouldnt be an attractive candidate if he werent the Defensive Coordinator for a team that has played for 3 national championships in the last 4 years. If he were at a place such as Rutgers serving in the same capacity, I just dont think hed be as sought after because I dont think he brings anything unique to the table with his defense and it depends on how much of it is under his direction and how much is under Saban's.

I would say the defense is all Saban's. Very much like the Belichick of the NFL (interesting Saban is a Belichick disciple in his Cleveland Browns days)

Rather have a head coach right bow but smart is a good coach. I just think we need someone who knows how to be the ceo. Bcs hc experience not a must but bcs coordinator experience before teir hc gig is very relevant to me. I like the list if candidates we all think we are talking to. Jones was my least favorite because im not sold on cincy and the big east. Wouldnt have been bummed about him as head coach though. We have a good list

Thats a great comparison. Even further Belichick was a Parcells disciple in New York in the 80's and 90's.

They all learn to keep a strong staff that share the same philosophical approach to coaching as them, which allows their assistants to coordinate without there being any issue that comes up.

If Kirby Smart would take this job, make him an offer. I don't see UGA firing Richt anytime soon, and Saban is CFL at Alabama

That could be a while.

Yep, maybe he'd take a smaller Southern school while he waits. Although, I still don't know if Richt will survive his extension at UGA. Dawg fans are getting impatient with never winning the big games & the fact that all of their rivals have won NCs in the recent past while they keep playing in the Outback & Cap One bowl games. Plus, it seems like every year, they start the season w/o a couple of their stars due to off-field transgressions. I am biased b/c my husband hates Richt so I hear about how he's ready for the Kirby Smart-era to begin all of the time (including a drunken rant last Saturday - ha!)...

Pretty sure Kirby is content until the Bama or UGA HC positions open up.
I am not so sure about this.

I read on a few blogs today that included interviews with Saban that Smart is keen to be an HC. That he interviewed for 2 jobs last year and he was in the running for Tennessee and I think Auburn. One of the sites said that if he wants to be a HC now, he'd have to go outside of the SEC.

Who knows?

I full on admit I don't know jack about whether he'd take our job or not - I just know that UGA fans are getting restless (which they seem to be after every season). And I know that he's expected to be their #1 target now that Muschamp is at UF. There is definitely a split of UGA fans on Richt's job security.

This is flawed logic to me. If anything a guy like Smart would have more pressure being that the HC is such an expert on his side of the ball. Saban brought Smart with him to the NFL and back to Bama - he didn't do that just to collect a paycheck and wear a visor during practice. If you're an aspiring defensive minded coach, who better to coach under and learn from than a guy like Saban.

Look at a different example from the NFL: Bill Walsh's coaching tree. There are plenty of offensive coaches who were extremely successful after working under Walsh on the offensive side of the ball: Mike Holmgren, Sam Wyche, Dennis Green. The second level of his tree are littered with offensive coaches: Mike Shanahan, Gary Kubiak, Mike McCarthy, etc.

This guy would be a fantastic hire IMO.

Also, Saban is quoted in a recent article as saying he thinks Smart could stay and replace him if Alabama wanted to because he has the potential to be a world class HC. Saban also said he loves that he can leave the defense to Smart and not worry about it on game days. That Smart can make all the adjustments, etc.

I agree. Totally down with either.

Which leads to the main question of the thread-would we prefer a Coordinator at a top program or an HC at a lower tier program?

I'll take the coordinator at a top program more often than not. He's experienced the pressure and level of competition at the BCS level, he's been around the best college athletes in the country and should know how to recruit them (I'm sick of this diamond in the rough, coach 'em up bulls**t), and if he's coaching under a top BCS HC that says a lot to me that a coach that actually knows what he is doing hired that particular coordinator to be on his staff.

This kind of ignores the possibility that a current coach at a lower tier program may have experience as a coordinator at a top program. Rather than pick one or the other, why not get both in one.

Let's throw in the Stanford DC and DIaco too!

I'd take Wilcox over those two. Listening to Diaco he seems like an odd duck. Mason would be a solid hire, but Kirby Smart doesn't have the HC charisma/attitude. Great DC, don't know about HC quality. All this is from a few youtube press conferences and on-field interviews, so it doesn't mean much. just my 2 cents.

We may see Smart's interest in HC positions on Dec 30th,when the next big shoe drops. There was a recent big-name DC that went from being named Asst HC into an SEC's recently opened HC slot, and he had that provision written into his weeks-before signed extension and raise, too. "If this conference's HC position opens, I can bolt..."

I wonder if we'll see this happen in the opposite direction. A little reciprocity, conference to conference? Smart obviously wasn't interested in Tenn, knowing it's lack of future potential for winning, only being a coaches' graveyard.

CKS was in Georgia recruiting yesterday. I think he would be a great choice for you guys. He seems to be mentioned for about half the job openings but rarely interviews. Word is (like most say here) he is waiting on the UA or uga job. The only negative I could think of is that he has not recruited the west but your recruiting is about blown for this year anyway. Even CNS could not do much his first year at UA when he came back in January.

I cant see Kirby Smart in Boulder, to him the "left" coast is Baton Rouge. It would take years for him to establish recruiting ties on the west coast. We don't have years in Boulder, we need someone to yank the wheel and turn this around starting the day he is hired. We have already shown, and with good reason, with the money that is exchanging hands there is no f-ing 5 yr plan.

The motto is "PROGRESS IN 2, OR CU"

I think the 'Bama Defense is well-regarded by every HS coach on this continent. Kirby wouldn't be laying siege and storming anyone's fortress - they'd open the gates and welcome him in, and every good HS coach would be keen on getting his best players to shine under Kirby Smart's program.

That would last for a couple of years until he proved - as an HC - to be a total flop. Maybe if he was taking mistresses on motorcycles, locking up deadwood in cages, things like that - I think Smart would have to prove to be detrimental - not the other way around. This Bama NC Run of the last several years is a huge freeway that most HS coaches would be pleased to have connections.

Not clear on why Smart would come here, he can enjoy the ride at Bama while waiting for choice of $EC jobs...
