Scholarship numbers

Posting here as I'd rather keep the discussion of how many we have and how to use it out of the recruiting forum.

I just did a quick analysis of the roster and I show 73 guys on scholarship (per current cubuffs.com roster) eligible to play next year, prior to any attrition.

I am including the players Embree was not bringing back (Grossnickle, Darden and Thornton in that 73).

I am including walkons that were awarded scholarships that may have been 1 year deals. (Wood, Fernandez, Ford).

Subtracting 73 from the maximum number of 85, leaves us 12 scholarships total, including the Gray shirts. At this time, I think we have four of those (Thomas, Williams, McCartney and Keough).

Class of 2013 therefore has room under the 85 max for 12 guys, if everyone came back with no attrition, as counted above.

We got a total of 12 slots, with 4 of them being taken by gray shirts....

I would bet that TunaMac has to figure this out in a hurry - we'll call it JE-Math

Is peyton williams a GS of included in last years numbers. I dont know that he actually came to Boulder after tearing up his knee.

Jeff Thomas would likely be the one to count in last years' class I would think, as he was most definitely not a planned greyshirt.

Really doesn't matter what class the greyshirts count against as the only relevant number is staying at 85 or below.

I edited my OP accordingly to include Peyton.

So we have 12 commits for 8 slots before attrition. We may be done here guys if there's not attrition we don't know about beyond the rumors of Gerald Thomas, or Yuri, or Crawley....etc

The issue is not counting back or forward. They'll count as many back as they can without going over the 25 limit for any particular scholarship year.

But you cannot have more than 85 on scholarship at any one time. We graduated 8. We were a few under 85 this year. There are only about a dozen spots and we have more than that with verbal commitments... plus the greyshirts. MacIntyre's got some work to do.

You know Buffnik is busy at work and probably speed-reading, when he finally weighs in and basically regurgitates what's already been said above!

:wink2:

With the 3 that Embree was not bringing back it sounds like he had 15 Scholarships. You usually lose 4 to 6 every year to attrition (grades, injury, homesick, etc.). I think Embree was thinking 18 to 19 in this class. I think they were going to have a couple of the players offered to Greyshirt - Lindsay and Liselle I believe. MacIntyre can get the plan from Jashon Sykes and Darian Hagan, it is up to the new coach to adjust the plan as he sees fit.

Attrition will happen and the numbers will work out.

This class will only be limited by what Coach MacIntyre wants and can get.

Would not surprise me to see four or more years of full classes of 25...

The numbers will work themselves out, one way or the other...

Hearing about more than 6 guys could transfer. McIntyre has a lot of relationship mending to do.

Attrition happens every year and even moreso w/ a coaching change. But what I am nervous about is that our attrition may come from some of our most talented young players which will be amongst the hardest to replace.

Let's hope MikeMac focuses on retaining the Crawley's, Hobbs, GTs before bothering about new recruits.

You have the oddest spin on things! For the record Crawley quit Embree's team mid-season and had to be begged back. Hobbs has a major family issue and had indicated tranfer was likely back in October (on the record) and G. Thomas is homesick.

Fpr some of the others, this isn't about relationship mending, it's about deciding if you are butt hurt that your buddy got fired for being a horrible football coach or if you are interested in being a winner. Do you want to continue to be embarrassed to be on the field or do you want to be proud to be here? TunaMac will need to figure that out, and I'm sure he knows that true freshmen can be delicate. But the last thing he needs to concern himself with is "relationship mending".

Football players (that you want) want to win and succeed. They will get it or they will not.

PRich and Dillon don't seem to need any special handholding relationship mending bs. And I'm sure that's true for the vast majority of FOOTBALL players we have.

Suffice it to say that not all of the players on the team were as adamant as many fans were about JE being shown the door. It's totally expected for a lot of guys to have some hard feelings about that, and a small percentage of them may go so far as to leave the program. Most will remain, and hopefully thrive under the new coaching staff, but I'm not going to minimize the significance of the relationships that some of these kids developed with their coaching staff, nor am I going disparage those kids for being upset. It was obvious that before the firing, the team was already becoming a bit fractured, so restoring some semblance of unity in that locker room better be near the top of Big Mac's agenda. Just my two cents.

Denial doesn't help.

Surely Buffaholic did not go on that rant and then mention Richardson as a guy who does not need handholding? I probably read that wrong.

Has he needed any since those transfer rumors a few years ago? Seems like he's become the leader of the team since his injury

The rumor was a lot higher than 6 after Hawkins was fired.

Seriously.

This isn't about the coach. This is about having to change coaches. For some of these guys, this will be their 3rd HC, 3rd coordinator and 3rd position coach. For the younger guys, it's that the coaches they committed to are changing and they just saw some of the older guys get a bad deal when that happened.

Back to the OP.

I count 80 guys currently on the roster

8 graduating seniors

3 graduating Jr.s (ZG, DT and JD) who were announced as leaving by JE

So 69 guys on the roster for 2013

4 GS (Jeff Thomas, Peyton Williams, Gerrad Kough and Derek McCartney)

makes 73, as holic pointed out.

12 spots and 11 commits by my count. So, absent attrition whihc is likely to happen, but impossible to predict, there is one spot.

Since transfers aren't going to be granted until Spring, it looks to me like recruiting is pretty much over unless there is going to be some oversigning or GS's in this class (i.e. P. Lindsey).

Adam just used the number of 20. That's a really high number for me right now. Attrition is expected, but that's a lot of guys. HCMM doesn't seem to be running guys off like JE did (WillJeff, West, etc)

My OP stated we had 8 spots for incoming freshmen, before attrition (and assuming the 3 walkons awarded scholarships kept them for another year).

There's probably some attrition already known that makes my number more like 12 spots. Throw in the inevitable attrition this spring and 20 still seems like a stretch number to me. Of course, a couple of these kids are likely grey shirt candidates (pretty much any kid without other BCS offers may consider that option, which is most of the class).

For the record, I was totally ok with not bringing back 5th year seniors who were not contributing. 4 full years and 3-4 summers should pretty much fulfill the obligation in my book.

My guess is we sign somewhere around 15 to 17 and 1 or 2 GS. I also expect at least 4 transfers.
I really want P.Lindsay to GS and I wouldn't mind seeing the OT that we took out of Colorado GS either. The guys who was only 250ish right now. His name slips my mind.

Lisella. And it would be beneficial to give him that extra year because I don't see him contributing until at least 2015 but he's got athleticism upside and comes from a local program accustomed to winning so he likely has that leadership and swagger intangible with the plus of being from a school with which we desperately need a positive recruiting relationship.

I would love to see him get to 20. I think there's 20 players who can make solid contributions to our rebuilding job.

First - we have some gaps to fill where guys will play immediately.
Second - we have pipeline issues at places like OLine where we need numbers.
Third - we have to add balance and even take some guys where we overloaded last year, since many of them played as true frosh (it's as if they were 2011 guys), at a position that normally redshirts.

D-Line:
Kafavalu - played
Henington - played
Solis - played
Tupou - played
Wilson - RS
Rasmussen - RS
Stuart - RS

So I would look at this as though we took 4 guys in 2011 and 3 guys in 2012. Probably need to be thinking 4 guys in 2013 that can redshirt. A good rule of thumb is always 1 guy per position which is about 23 per year given a specialist, when you can afford to balance classes. My point is that even though we overloaded D-Line last year, by playing 4 guys, we really only made up for only taking Juda Parker in 2011 and he did not redshirt either. We are in no position to ignore that position. Perhaps TE and RB are good for now.

I think those two GS candidates are no-brainers.
Greyshirts can really benefit when they are local and they can attend meetings and practices (not participate but attend), get on the conditioning program with the S&C coach, check in often, etc.
