HCMM's explanation:
"I would think that any young man when a situation like this transpires at any school across the country -- and there are quite a few this is happening at -- sometimes they think about transferring," MacIntyre said. "All I'm talking to them about is making sure they go through spring practice and really get to know what we do and see how they fit in it. Then at the end of spring practice, if they don't feel like it's working out for them, at that time they could decide to transfer.

"But I think if they go through spring, go through winter workouts and get to know us and see what we're doing, I think majority of them, if any of them are thinking about transferring, would change their mind."

Beyond a general delaying of certain players moving on (against their wishes), what this really does is prevent the kids from establishing themselves at a new school during spring ball. It also makes it possible that we will have some locker room problems when (understandably) pissed players are present where they don't want to be.

There are negatives to this move. It's a bit unusual, and definitely hard nosed. That said... it might be necessary and I can see why we are doing it.

what do you guys think?

I like it, it's leadership for kids who could use it in spite of how they feel. This is what was missing the last two years.

It also helps keep other schools from poaching players that may be wavering a little on whether they should stay at CU before they have had a chance to get to know and bond with what is going to be a mostly or entirely new coaching staff.

I actually really like this approach. Maybe HCMM realizes that JE was able to get some talent on this roster. Some that other schools will want and he wants them to at least see what is going on here first before they up and leave. Tough leadership from the onset. Very interesting to me.

Only works if these kids on the fence still feel motivated to give full effort during winter workouts and spring ball, otherwise it could be really detrimental to the team.

I'm okay with this. While I understand that there will probably be repercussions, this gives the staff almost 5 months to bond with the current members of the team. If they still want to transfer after that, they can. They're not being held against their will for another football season.

MM will have to be ready to deal with the bad attitudes of athletes who want to transfer and absolutely know that they won't change their minds - otherwise, it could make things very difficult for him.

I'm speculating that they are doing this because the last regime left with a scorched earth agenda. This is merely a cooling off period. It actually helps the kids too. Take care of your schoolwork, take some time to think things over, and if you still want to transfer, fine. The "establishing themselves at spring ball" comment makes no sense considering that the player would have to sit for a year anyway - plenty of time to show off their talents elsewhere if that's what they want. There aren't a whole lot of advantages to leaving mid-year.

I don't like it. It's unusual and unfair.

First, that just simply isn't true. It's not unusual to not grant transfer requests due to a change in coaching.

What is unusual is the circumstances of having your head coach fired, then publicly disparaging everything about the AD on his way out, getting a mouthpiece such as the Press Conference, having a "going-away party" and having more than a little suspicion that members of the outgoing staff are telling kids to transfer to help make Mike Bohn look bad.

Secondly - any kid can transfer. What he can't do is immediately become a free agent, essentially re-opening his recruitment, and go on scholarship immediately at another school. With or without a "release", the kid is still ineligible to play next fall.

Coach TunaMac is simply asking them to give it thru spring ball. If they want a full release then, and have given it a shot, then they have plenty of time to be at another school in good standing in the fall. Where they are going to be on the scout team while sitting out the fall, and then going thru next Spring's workouts. They are not missing out on anything by transferring this summer vs right now. Nothing at all.

If they were to transfer now without really meeting the new staff they've accomplished nothing but having succeeded in making an immature decision. Kids this age make these types of decisions all the time. Some of these kids also have potential APR issues as I've heard that more than one of these kids has some work to do.

The only downside is if a kid is going to take the attitude of Crawley all the way thru. But there's ways to deal with that. I am sure TunaMac will get his point across. It's really this simple:

1. Comply and give it 100% shot and you can become a free agent in plenty of time. I will recommend you to anyplace you wish to transfer in this case.
2. Quit now, sit out for a year and you are a free agent. College progress needs to be made during this time though (JC?)
3. Stick around and choose to be a problem, in which case you will be disciplined including possible suspension, which will look unfavorable to places you would like to transfer to.

He's asking for a few months and a chance. MORE than reasonable and there is no real downside. Great move Coach!

unfortunately it is like a business these days. These kids need to understand that. The school already has $ invested in them, so they need to really think these decisions through - fair is fair and the road goes both directions. These players really need to understand that they will get better coaching and that will help them in the future, this is not a big popularity contest. CU is much bigger than that

I'm all for it - 100% behind the move. This happens every two to three years across all Commanding Officer billets in the military, and the sailors/airmen/troops don't get to put in transfer papers. All usually works out for the best (except when you runinto one of those "he who shall not be named" types.) In fact we just had a change of command up here and while the new admiral will be different than the last, it gives a chance for all to learn from a new leadership style.

PLus, wouldn't this help out with the grades/academics side of the house in that if someone still decides to transfer, they will have finished out the whole school instead of just half?

I was typing my response that basically restated these points - sorry to rehash.

I will add that I would be shocked that kids who want to transfer now aren't turned around 180 by the spring, in most cases. Paul Richardson wanted to transfer his freshman year without any of these "scorched earth" issues and look where he is now! He's on his 3rd staff and 100% bought in. The guy has matured and realizes that he has a chance to be on a good team offense and showcase himself. Not that hard actually. G. Thomas will see this as well in time.

Agree with what you said, except it's not unfortunate. It's a great life-lesson. This is how the real world works. If you have dreams of being a professional athlete, or any other kind of professional, this is how it works. All coaches talk about teaching kids about life, this is one of their responsibilities.

I don't see this as much of an issue. The players who transfer will still have to sit out a year, so if they decide to leave then they will still have plenty of time to get acclimated to their new teams.

Do we want a winning football culture or not?

Because if we want it, we have to support treating this like a business. We've got to stop being the nice guys who treat D1 athletics like it's not a huge business and the chief marketing arm for much larger business (the university as a whole).

I see this policy as a damn good sign.

It also shows, as we would expect, that Mike believes in what he is doing and in his staff.

Do not like it. People always say that coaches get to leave all the time why not players. Now that the shoe is on the other foot it is okay. There are windows of opportunity and a lot of those windows will close if a player is not allowed to transfer now before signing day so a school can give them a slot. If it was me and I wanted to transfer I would be making a lot of noise. I do not want anyone to transfer but I do not think this is the way to do it. If someone wants to transfer the coach needs to sit down and sell them on not doing so. I think this indicates that there may be more transfer request than we are aware of on the team.

As I said in the Gerald Thomas thread, this is a good thing for the kids, too. 18-22 year olds are not what you would call pinnacles of reasoning, especially males. Allow them to cool down and take a look at what they're being offered here before they make an irrational decision that makes them lose a season and have to re-establish themselves elsewhere. If they get through spring ball and still hate it, or feel like there's not a place for them, then let them go. But I feel like a move like this can save at least some kids from themselves.

What you seem to forget, it is their decision to make. Not yours, not the coach and not Mike Bohn's. This is a free country and they have a right to make the decision - to screw them out of the opportunity is wrong.

How can he sell himself before classes begin in January? Not much time to do that. I don't buy the "windows of opportunity" argument.

The ones who want to transfer, will.

They can go if they want. CU isn't forcing them to stay at gunpoint - they're just saying, if you go, you're not taking your schollie with you and essentially becoming a free agent. I think this is a good idea, because it forces the kids to make a logical, instead of emotional decision. Making them stay for an extra semester is not going to be the end of the world for these kids. If they absolutely want to go, they can either leave school and wait until spring to be released from their commitment, or they can go through with working out and participating in spring football and then still be released. Either way, they'll have plenty of time to find another school to go to, get transferred, and start participating in fall practice. Then they'll have an entire year to prove themselves to their new program. They're not being treated as slaves.
