NCAA studying changing transfer rules

If this passes, kids with a 2.6 GPA or higher could transfer without sitting out (i.e. play immediately).
Coaches would have little opportunity to block a transfer under any conditions and even if a kid has to sit out, he is restored an extra year.

I don't like it. What it does is create a situation whereby kids can decide to transfer because they see there's an opening on a really good team. Sort of free agency. Hate this rule.

Discuss.

Talk about opening the door up to constant recruiting and having kids always looking for something better once they have established themselves, ughhhhh. Bad move.

The first bullet isn't very clear:
"Athletes would still need to get permission to contact another school before transferring. But permission would be tied to practice and competition, not athletics aid. So even if permission was denied, the student-athlete would still be able to receive a scholarship."

Since scholarships are one year deals, it could still be rescinded for any reason, correct?

So a kid with a 2.5 in engineering can't play immediately but one with a 2.6 in Ethnic Studies can? That sends a good message.

I thought all engineers got nothing but "A's? How much does it take to drive a train? The tracks are already down!

Ramifications of this might be even worse for college b-ball than football. Saw a recent tweet that was slightly terrifying for anybody wanting compete for a basketball title...."Imagine Calipari getting to operate under this system, top recruiting class every year than fill in holes with top transfers for the guys that leave for the league."

I gotta agree with you guys, this would really hurt competition, especially for the smaller schools. In the NFL, NBA, etc. they can't just change teams on a whim.

Agreed. No way the NCAA schools allow this. For every Alabama, there is a blocking vote from an NIU.

how does this differ from the volleyball t-fer rules? they dont have to sit if i recall.

The only way I'd favor this is if it applied to third-year players who were bench-sitters, not being used by their current team, but with good grades. They're the ones who need options. But I have no idea how such a rule would be written, so it's probably better to leave it as it is.

On the issue of player movement, one area I'd like to see changed is an agreement with the NBA to pattern college player entries to be held of until the third year. This way you reduce the semi-pro environment around programs like Kentucky.

His cuts both ways. So many kris think they are 'the man' coming out of HS and are utterly stunned to find themselves red-shirting and on the practice squad at USC.

i would bet for every one soph or junior turning heads and wanting a bigger stage at a mid-major or lower BCS team, you get two wanting to transfer from an upper tier BCS team that is disgruntled at the depth chart.

Uh...what?
Lol! Thank you, iPad! I should know better than to try to post in a hurry on it without careful review. Let's try again:

I would imagine this issue will get hashed over at the national coaching convention this weekend, and they'll lobby the hell out of the NCAA to make sure this transfer rule doesn't happen.

This reeks of RPI. Coaches would not be happy to lose a kid that's contributing to the team GPA but isn't getting much playing time. Maybe gets more of the bench involved to prevent transfers? I dunno.

There is no transfer in non-revenue generating sports. I got a taste of how bad this is first hand.

My daughter played D1 golf. They had a pretty good team coming back, led by a certain Senior. The senior decided over the summer to change schools to a program that had a legitimate chance to make a NCAA championship run. She got a 1 year scholarship to go play for a rival school for her senior year, with no penalties.

It is just so anti-competitive. The girl literally looked at the team she was on and ascertained a conference championship was their ceiling, but the other school might go all the way. Plus it offered a more prestigious diploma. Good for her but absolutely impossible for college athletics.

Oh yeah, the transfer school played a week in Hawaii over spring break while the school she left was in Tucson that week. She said that was her biggest reason! The schools were 1 hour apart.
