Redshirting Gordon

From another thread:

If this is truly the case, redshirting Gordon was a mistake. Maybe Tad felt he could count on Simba to spell Scott for 10 minutes a game. I am not convinced of that at this point. Simba goes in and the whole building holds its breath.

OK, time to end this. First off, I'm not wild about redshirting Gordon because the kid has talent and you can always use talent. That said, the constant whining over him taking a redshirt has to stop, especially when people claim that he should be getting minutes of SHT.

1.) While Gordon is 6'8", he's not a banger. He's not physical down low. Yung has reported repeatedly (and I noticed it at the practice I saw) that Gordon is more of a perimeter player on offense, and while he gets lots of blocked shots on D, it's mostly from freelancing and getting weak side opportunities (think Dre).

2.) Gordon is LOST on offense right now. Big leap from a Colorado HS 4A power forward/center to a Pac-12 SF/PF. Judging by a lot of reports he's having a hard time picking up the offense and he's too slow to keep things moving. The game needs to slow down for him a little bit mentally. The redshirt year will help with that A LOT.

Listen, I love Wes and I think he's going to be All-Pac-12 by the time he's done at CU. But he's RAW. He has a lot to work on. He honestly wouldn't be getting more than 8 minutes a night right now anyway, and I'm not sure it's worth giving up a season where he is an All-Pac performer for those 8 minutes. I'd love to see him out there, but honestly he doesn't address our biggest need - offensive playmaking. So everyone needs to stop with the argument that Gordon should be getting Simba's minutes. I'd love to find a replacement for Simba's minutes, but that person isn't on our roster this season. And probably won't be next year either...

... but, but, but... Shane is soooooo terrible.

Let me ask you this: when passed the ball, does Wes ignore it, and let it bounce off his body? Should he miraculously catch it, does he immediately drop it? When presented with a rebound opportunity, does he just stand on the floor? If you answered 'no' to all these questions, then he'd be at least some upgrade over SHT. Raw, not his position, etc... don't matter. Hell, I'd take Stalzer playing in the paint over Shane right now.

I thought he was taller, and there was some talk about him being a true Center?

Let's also make this very clear, Tad DID NOT red-shirt Gordon. Let me say it again, Tad does not make any player red-shirt. He talks with all of the freshman, talks about where they are on the court, he talks about where they are off the court and academically, the type of minutes they should expect to play and then he lets them make the decision for themselves. Jenkins and Gordon choose to red-shirt, Tad did not red shirt them.

If Gordon didn't have academic issues, I think he would be playing over SHT right now. SHT got a little better toward the end of last year, but now, he is regressing for some reason. Mills must truly be terrible to not get any minutes over him.

Even if Gordon doesn't understand the offense, he could help our defense/rebounding/blocking shots/etc that Tunks rarely does, and he knows how to dunk on people, which is an huge upgrade over SHT. He would be a great complement to Dre with two guys that can block shots/rebound. Right now, we really only have Dre/Scott rebounding and that's it.

No point in playing Gordon out of position. We already have experienced players who are more comfortable on the perimeter. Shane is just gonna have to step it up.

Damiene Cain was supposed to be that guy. When you lose the top rated recruit (and only big) from a class, it can't help but hurt your roster for a year or two.

So I really think that Tad is going to get a big for the 2014 class and probably make that his top priority. Sure he has 3 wings in the game at a time, but we really struggle without Scott on the floor (and at times when he is in but the other guy has 50 pounds on him). It would be nice to get someone to play at least one year under Scott before he goes to the show.

I dunno, at barely 6'6" we'd have been relying on another undersized big(Roberson). Probably be in the same boat now anyway. Just didn't see Cain as being a big loss.

Where's the beef?

That's our main issue on the interior, imo. We handle height well. We don't handle wide bodies very well.

Yeah good point, but go back to the Air Force and Georgia Southern games. This team doesn't seem to react well to physical play no matter who it is.

The SHT replacement would have to start scoring and rebounding for the other team to qualify as worse than SHT.

Theres a string of three consecutive plays around the 12m mark in the first half where SHT gets scored on easily twice, and then sets an illegal screen for a turnover. He's just not a basketball player.

I'm for redshirting Gordon despite how bad SHT is on the court. By playing him too early, we would be compounding the problem.

Andre Adams (PF) would sure be nice. Hard to see us bringing in a top center recruit, unless it's via transfers or the JC ranks.

I dunno. Thought it was a savy hoops move when Shane almost shoved USC's center in to the crowd in the 2nd half.

Especially when everyone else is running down court and you're the only two there. Maybe Shane thought the refs attention would be at the other end of the court.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that Gordon redshirting wasn't a knee-jerk decision, it was planned for at least 6 months before the season started. I know one of the posters here had that info in April or May.
