'13 AZ SG Jaron Hopkins (Signed to Colorado)

A mixtape with footage from his senior season so far.

Have to love his speed and athletic ability in the open floor. Even more so, if he's added a reliable jump shot... could be really scary 2 years from now

His release on his jumper is slow, but that can be fixed. I'm kinda surprised how poorly attended HS basketball is in Arizona.

I know Jaron's had some mixed reviews lately, but I really like what I see. He's long, athletic, and already has a decent build. He looks to be a creative finisher and can go left or right, but needs to use his left hand to finish more. The form on his jumper isn't perfect, but it's workable and, it he puts in the work to become even an average shooter, he'll be a good one. Other than that, he just needs to tone down his game a little. He won't get away with all those no-look passes at the college level. In the end, I'd expect him to contribute immediately as an additional ball handler and slasher.

Adam on Rivals had an update on Hopkins- he almost notched a triple-double last Friday and, after a 41 point performance last night, has 75 in his last two games. Now if he could just improve on his 53% shooting from the line...

Unfortunately sound like he will fit right in on our team.

I have no clue how a coach who is so good at developing fundamentals in players and teams like Tad is cannot figure out how to get us at least decent from the line when it matters.

Part of it is just the sacrifices made to recruit the caliber of athlete Tad wants. We're getting athletic kids who just aren't as far along in skill development. And at this point, I think a lot of it is confidence too. The struggles from the line are in their heads.

Hopkins did have 34pts last Friday(1/4/13). But he played not 1 but 3 games this past week (brutal) . He had 22 pts on Tuesday and was 50% from the line. He had 28 on Thursday. And the opponent coach's strategy was to foul Hopkins because of his free throw percentage. He missed two in the first half of the game. The game was tied with 2 minutes to go and Hopkins was fouled 4 times and hit all eight free throws straight to win the game by three. And in the game on Friday where he scored 41, he was 8 for 11 from the line. So in 1 weeks time, he scored 125 points.

Thanks hoop'er! I didn't realize he had multiple games this week. It's good to hear Jaron's making his FT's when they count. I know I'm stating the obvious here, but I really think improving from the line is going to be a huge part of his success in college (even more than most recruits). With Jaron's athleticism and ability to break down his defender, he's going to spend a lot of time at the line, and really needs to convert those opportunities.

What is up with ESPN? 6 months ago Jaron was ranked 46 in the top 100, now he is rated a 77 but is the number 1 player in AZ. I don't see the sense of it all. ESPN is sketchy at best.

Rivals also dropped him. Haven't watched him enough to really know why, but would guess it's somewhat related to shooting motion not really improving. He's still a very good get for CU's program though, even if he hypothetically never becomes a great shooter.

Honestly, I'm wondering if it's the position "change". When he was ranked so highly, most of the places had him as a PG. I'm as guilty of this as anyone, but big PG's tend to get a bit of a bump overall. Now that he's shifted to off-guard, I wonder if that got him slightly downgraded.

I agree with Goose, I think the position change has a lot to do with it.
Had a chance to watch him some and his jumper has really improved. According to Maxpreps, he's shooting 40% from 3 point land and 55% from the field. In his last 5 or 6 games with the exception of 1 game, he shot 75% or better free throws. Should be a good fit.

Great info. Thanks.

My impression of J-Hop is that he's more of a Carlon Brown than a Cory Higgins. And that he's a much different player than Spencer.

After watching several highlight videos I was thinking Alec Burks. Alec was probably more explosive but Jaron's handles are more impressive.

Not a bad comparison. J-Hop rebounds well like Alec did too. I remember when Alec came in there was some confusion over where to play him. Bzdelik was thinking PG at first and then realized it was just better to play a 3-guard lineup and let Alec freewheel with a forward in no man's land trying to deal with him on the perimeter. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see the same with J-Hop. A lot could be determined by whether J-Hop is above or below the magical 6'4" height measurement.

When he went down to UofA, there was article that came out that said Coach Miller took all of his measurements when they offered him and they measured him at a solid 6'5". That was last spring so he may have grown some since then.

Even more than a position change, I really think it's just that the services are having a hard time placing Hopkins at any position. The book on him right now is that he isn't a true PG, doesn't shoot well enough to be a 2, and doesn't have the size of a 3. In Boyle's offense though, where the guards really don't play traditional roles anyway, his versatility should play well.

Watching his highlights, which is all I have to go on, he reminds me a bit of both Cory Higgins and Alec Burks. He is a quick jumper who can get to to a spot and elevate quickly. Cory and Alec were both able to take a couple of quick dribbles then elevate more quickly than their defender and hit the mid-range jumper. It looks to me like Hopkins will be able to do the same thing. He has the height and hops to give himself an advantage inside the arc.

Of course eventually he needs to consistently hit the trey to be a complete wing player, but initially he just needs to use his current skills to gain an advantage.

I really feel he has the skills and physical abilities to make a big impact in Boyle's system.

:yeahthat: Doubled!! Can't wait for next year. Two excellent red-shirt Frosh with a year in the system, practicing daily against their teammates and consistent S&C, and three true Frosh with high level of talent. It will be scary next year.

One thing that we can hope for is that either Jaron and/or one of the other new guys will give us guy we can count on to create some scores in those times we seem to have on the road when our offense seems to have gone to the wrong airport. He seems like a kid who may be able to create a quality offensive chance to break those stretches when we just can't seem to score despite ourselves.

Anyone know this kids stats for the season so far? Do we really think that he is going to get that Top-100 boost?

MaxPreps has him at 24.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 3.2 apg and 2.8 spg.

That was only through 1/11, though.

I looked on Dobson HS's team site, but they don't have stats. However, they are showing that their next game is Thursday night for the opening round of states. Good luck, J-Hop!
