#ValentinesDayMassacre Serious Discussion

Even though it came off as whiny, bellamatt is right in that there are many serious things to discuss about the CU-Zona game tomorrow. So let's try to keep this one on topic. We have a smack thread already.

Things I'm curious about for tomorrow:

1.) The mental states of the two teams. Does CU come out pressing TOO hard? Do we come out so fired up that we end up doing more damage to ourselves? What about Arizona? Are they going to come out pissed off over their loss to Cal or are they going to be questioning themselves?

2.) Which Ski do we get tomorrow? Do we get the Charleston Classic Tournament MVP who just kills everyone out there? Do we get the 3-for-17 Ski who refuses to pass? Or do we get a Ski similar to the Oregon State Ski who's shot wasn't falling, but he realized it and started focusing on D and keeping things moving?

3.) Where's Arizona's D? They let Crabbe go off on Sunday. Does that leave space for The Mayor to duplicate his OSU effort?

Hey guys, huge U of A fan here. I love what you guys have brought to the conference since joining and look forward to anytime we play you guys.

What are your thoughts on tomorrow nights game?

I was on the Addicted to Quack Podcast last night and spent a pretty good time discussing Askia Booker and him being the CU wildcard/limiting factor. They asked who guards him and I really think Arizona sticks with Lyons on him. Size-wise it's the right thing to do and Nick Johnson is best suited on Dinwiddie and trying to disrupt the general offensive flow.

All that said, I really think point three is the game's biggest difference maker. Arizona's offense has been serviceable but the games where the defense has showed up have been the most impressive. Ask Miami about it.

1. More worried about Zona's state of mind. Need to crush them early, soul wise. All their big comebacks have been at home.
2. We get closer to Charleston Ski, which keeps us in the game.
3. Crabbe don't care about D (see the 2d half against us). Mayor will not be duplicating that effort anytime soon, if ever. He was effing perfect!

here is what worries me. You know that the team has been thinking about this game for a while and are ready to try and get some revenge. Like Goose said, our team can come out too fired up and get some stupid fouls early which would hurt us in the game. We know that the crowd is going to be more than fired up, it will be interesting to see if Arizona can keep focused and if we can intimidate the refs to get some home cooking.

This is a good point. If CU can get up early and crush them (and then not do what we do best and piss it away), Arizona might just fold. That said, with senior leadership like Lyons and Hill, we need to make sure the stake is in their heart before we celebrate.

Sounds like you are advocating for Rugged's pregame ritual to be performed at half time.

Goose, I meant to post this in the serious thread.

Bellamatt wanted to find out what happened with Dorner yesterday so he googled "manhunt" and "big bear", got distracted and masturbated instead.

But to be serious, while avoiding reading your OP, I am very nervous about this game. I think it is a massacre for the Cats. They have just as much or more motivation to beat us down than we have so I don't think the "energy intangible" will benefit us. They are deeper and bigger (because of all the big dick they take in the ass) and I think we lose by 10.

I have a bad feeling about this game. I think zona wins big.

+1

However, I have a hunch that Bellamatt gets raped by a clown. Wait, is this the right thread for that? 'Cause I'm serious--I actually have that hunch.

Sorry Goose. I'll crawl back under my rock now.

So do I,.

I think we come out pressing too hard and get down early, Zona unlike most teams we play has enough skill and depth not to let us back in the game.

Holy ****, it appears a lot of Buffs have us losing big.

And I'm one of them.

I think the emotions will just hurt us more than help. I'm hoping that it becomes like KU-KSU, but I can easily see it going the other way.

+1. sigh.

I am worried about this one, just like the Buffs, Zona has 2 different teams that could show up on any given night. When we should have had all the motivation in the world to come out and dominate (see UCLA) we just came out flat and played behind the whole game. Ashley only plays good every other game, and if we look at the box score he played one of his good games against Cal, but at the same time we have responded well to the 2 previous losses.

By the numbers, a lot of this game comes down to whether the Buffs are knocking down 3pt shots. Zona's perimeter defense is their weakness. But if we're missing, things get even tougher in the paint against them and long misses lead to run-outs for their fast break.

If we can get Lyons in foul trouble with their PG depth behind him we could be in good shape a-la UCLA.

I think getting Hill in foul trouble is more important. The guy can light it up from behind the arc and I have seen too many games where we have great defense and the shots still drop. I know that we are going to attack the hoop hard so hopefully we get the calls.

I think Dre has a big night. One of his biggest. Ski has an OK night, better than his road numbers but nothing stellar. XJ played very well at Arizona, and generally has been playing better at home, so I think he's good for 15 tomorrow. The Mayor is his usual consistent self. Our D was good enough at McKale, it'll be better at the Keg. Those factors combined put us over the top.

Keeping the team focused and the emotions channeled in a productive way is Tad's #1 challenge on this one. It's going to be a huge key, especially once the crowd kicks in, because you know the Keg is going to be rocking at the start. If we come out and play smart and under control, well the Pac-12 officials have already shown they can be swayed by a home crowd in the first meeting. If we come out playing stupid, we're not likely to get rewarded for it.

I can definitely see the concerns about an AZ blowout. But frankly, that's what I expected to see in Tucson, and it was anything but. I don't think that was a fluke.

Also, **** Directv. Get the Pac-12 Network, you morons!!

If this were to happen, i would love to see Nick Johnson slide to the 1, he is more then capable. One of the biggest problems that we have on our team is that Miller doesn't adapt. I don't know what the reason is but he is very unwilling to mix things up.

Ashley is more likey the one to be in foul trouble though, he has fouled out i think 2 of the last 3 games. Zeus plays inconsistent and Jarret is injured and is taking it easy. Luckily we have the depth to really be able to handle any situation, we can play small or big with at least 1 more then capable backup at every position. it just depends on what Couch is willing to do.

I cant agree more, i find myself pissed during the game more at PAC 12 network and the horrible stream then the way Zona plays, its pretty even though.

Should Tad play a zone defense? Doing that turned Cal around against AZ from (IIRC) a 6 point halftime deficit to going on a 16-2 run to open the second half. Plus from reading a thread on pointguard.com it seems that AZ fans feel that Miller can't coach against the zone.

Have we played a zone D at all this year?

Tad hates zone almost as much as Miller does, wont happen.

Parrom is our "Zone Killer" and he was benched for back to back turnovers during this run.

We can win if XJ brings his offensive game, Ski checks his, and Stalzer doesn't get off the bench. I think we'll trail big at some points throughout the game, but end up with a 5-7 point loss.
